I think you hit the nail right on the head. When people are going through hard times they always fall back on the roots. They need to hear something they can relate to and actually feel. Which can't be said about the majority of crap played on the radio nowadays.
@jamieclark420 i see a correlation here with the old timey music coming back. It became hugely popular in the 30's during a depression, in the 60's it was there underneath the surface and we had an unneccessary war killing tens of thousands of innocent Americans, and currently we are in the worst economic recession that really is depression that we've seen since the 30's. Needless to say I may be wrong, however I'm so damn happy it's making a comeback.

Maybe, though I would say the resurgence started earlier - late 90's at least. I do think there are cycles.
