Before viewing your tutorials, I made some Japanese stab-bound books and had wanted to learn Coptic binding for years, but wasn't able to find a class. I watched your videos, took notes, and made a beautiful book on my first try. I'm so excited! Thank you so much.
Hi. If i want to achieve a hard cover book, could I follow your steps until the end, and then glue the soft cover onto a seperate outer hard cover? Does it work the same way? Btw am intending to do a non-exposed spine. Thks!
Thank you so much for this! I just finished binding my portfolio following your tutorial. I had some trouble at the start, had to redo twice. With the first signature, my thread knotted up really bad, and the second time I realised I hadn't taken into account how much thread I might need. But now I'm done and it looks fantastic! I've never enjoyed book binding so much.
I am sorry, but I am not sure I understand the problem. At the ends, I simply take the needle and thread and connect it to the folded signature of paper directly below the one that I am sewing. Sorry I do not understand the question. Jim
Thanks so much for these detailed, easy to follow instructions. I was inspired to make a book for my brother's birthday present, as he writes poetry and I thought a hand-made book would be just the thing. I saw a gal on HGTV making one, and it turned out beautiful, however, she just mentioned that it was bound with the coptic method, but no explanation. I followed your video step-by-step and am very pleased with my results. I would caution against using Hemp cording as I did...much breakage!
I was taught the coptic stitch with two needles! This looks much easier. A question: how do you compute the length of thread needed? That would help me. Thanks in advance. Great video! {:-Deb
I had a student show me the two needle method. It was new to me. It a good solution for small books with only two sewing holds. Thanks for the comment. - Jim
You are so awesome, I've been binding mini albums just like this but the stitch I was using was much more difficult and really looked the same. This is so easy, your instructions were so clear, thank you for sharing I'll be using this stitch for now on!
You certainly can use adhesive to close up the open fold of the covers, but you don't have to. Some people insert a thin sheet of cover stock between the covers and then glue it closed. The cover stock will make the cover a bid more rigid if you need that. Thanks for the comment. - Jim
Thank you for the detailed instructions. I made my first hard cover coptic stitched book yesterday thanks to your video tutorial. I'm going to try the soft cover method tonight.
J! Thanks for posting this video - I'm binding a wedding book for some friends and needed a little reminder of how to start out. You should post some more stuff that we went over in class. :) Thanks again!
Thank you for posting this! I'm also interested in how hard-cover binding would differ from this. I'm creating a book using hand-engraved acrylic covers, so I can't see how to do the type of cover binding that you're demonstrating here.
Awesome tutorial! Thank you so much for recording it! It's really helped me out. Would you be willing to explain to me how it would differ if it were a hard cover and not folded like the signatures? Thanks so much.
thanks for sharing!

please help me figure out how to do the end stitches because I can´t get those to look like the center ones along the spine. Thanks. Carmel

Hi,
I do polymer covers with coptic stitch. I taught myself...wish I had seen this. But we live and learn.
