This is awesome! This is inspiring me to try this. I have a fish room with lots of tanks. I'd love to try to grow some plants with this kind of thing. Maybe you could write a follow-up about lighting, and maintenance of the system?
@zcarporn This is true, but timers that turn pumps on and off like that decrease the life span of the pumps. not to mention you'd have to find a pump that turns on, say every X minutes for X amount of time.
@daiv07 - I see your point, but we all know we've seen it done that way for eons (not literally) but you know what i mean. I've used it on a timer and the pump (2 times a day for 15min) didn't fail till it was half way into year 2. And i believe it was due to a surge (my power bar's surge bar didnt do its job). I could see your point easier if it was a cheap chinese made pump.
I'm just lost how often yours would fill up daily, as you only need to do it about 2 times a day.
@arbonac Every plant is different. Consider a tree that gets submerged in water. without a dry period the roots would rot and it would fall. In contrast, lily pads require constant water... there is of course some cross over but this is generally why one would want to provide dry periods.

Thats really cool! Are you going to use artificial lighting for your plants in the surge system? Is there enough light in that room without artificial lighting? Way cool system!

THANKS, i bought a pump today and sure enough there was a chart on it saying how much lift there is. QUESTION,my water is at a high ph level 7.4, what level ph should i wait for till a add plants?I all ready threw in some fish fish yesterday but doubt it if there are any nutrients for the plants yet. Should I wait till the ph drops or could i plant lettuce with the water I have already?Thanks for responding to my questions even though I sometimes think they might actually sound dumb to you:)
Hi there, I just finished a aquaponics work shop and found your system to be very cool. I have a question, What size pump are you using? How do you rate a pump, and know if it has enough lift to push the water as high as i need it? and how much did it cost you? I forgot to ask these questions at the work shop. ALOHA, Mike :)
Pumps are pretty easy to figure. they are rated as gal/hour (gallons per hour) or some form of that. to decide what size you need, you would measure the maximum vertical distance (height) the water needs to travel. usually on the box of the pump, you can find a graph or table that will indicate the flow rate (gal/hour) for different heights. this will help you decide on what size pump to use. we were running the rio+ 800. it was JUST enough. only cost about $30. hope this helps!
Just wondering if you have a heater in that fish tank? If no heater then what is the temp of the room you have that setup in? Water temp? Also what size fish tank do you have? I noticed some white substrate in the fishtank. What is that white stuff? Interesting setup you have using a surge setup. Do you run your pump 24/7? What is the fill up time per bucket?
IIRC zebra danio need a heater to keep them at ~22C temp.

If root systems needs to be dry then wet then dry again, then hydroponic systems that use a continuous flow of nutrient rich water would not work.
