It is simply not the same thing to listen to this music over internet and not on a vynil or cassette. Nothing against new technologies. Of course there are positive things associated wit it.... but, on the other hand they make everything sounds easy and meaningless. BTW this is just a comment, not a critic. Or maybe a critic to our times and our relationship with the listening of music in the present day.
Absolutely, digital technology has really dilute the physical quality and purpose of music, but it's sort of like how Warhol once put it: before, rich people wore rich-looking clothes and ate rich-looking foods, and poor had poor; now, the line between the rich and poor is really blurred. This applies to music, both mainstream and non-, nowadays, both can be obtained so easily, unlike only a few years ago you'd kill to find an LP of EN (if in the states, at least).
@KingOfUm yeah you're taking about the positive side of our time, democratic access to media/information... I totally agree. The paradox is that this easyness makes it less precious -to the new generations-. Because we had to search hard after a vinyl record or to find a thrashed-out cassette to copy (which was actually already a copy from a copy from another copy!), it made us listen more carefully to the things, giving them proper time&attention. Nowadays it's about mtv, hype and showyness.
And, although this is more my own opinion, the very artistic quality I think of most recent music has been compromised because of the very nature of the music industry, in a number of ways. But like you said, promotion, promotion, promotion, whereas with groups like Einsturzende Neubauten, they clearly still rely on their talent to sell their records.
@KingOfUm You wouldn't kill for one, you'd just save up your money and take a bus to another town, walk for a while, hope the record would be there and that you had enough money for it and the trip back home. you didn't know what the band looked like, what they twittered, how many thumbs up or woots they had in their pissbook, or if anyone else in the world was listening to them besides you. you might kill if someone tried taking it from you, though.
@Dagarvs Yeah, you got me, I wouldn't kill for one. But the point about that is the lack of commercial availability of their music in the US during their early career. I know that nowhere around where I live you would see one.
I went to college in Galveston(psilocybe WONDERLAND),and when I was coming home for some reason,I'd wait to leave til about 3 A.M. so I could make a bonzai run with no traffic.
Once I got on hwy. 7,which runs from East to Central TX,I'd just open it up,and stay that way.
Hwy 7's very hilly with lots of curves, and I'd be psilocybed to the gills-hauling bu**.
Yeah,I was rolling the dice with not only the cops, but also death.
I had this song's long version on cassette, and I'd keep it cranked!
