  • The original from Secret Treaties "blows away all others" if you're into heroin. The Imaginos version absolutely rocks. Why do you think that this version was produced? Live, it is a mind blower, too.

  • I live right near to where parts of this video was made, the big rock where you see a church like place, is called Roche Rock which is in Cornwall United Kingdom, if you want to see more pics of the place, please check out my facebook page called Roche Rock.

  • Dude... where the signature riff!? I haven't heard this song in mad long so I'm thinkin maybe I remember wrong, so went to metallica ver, and thought oh man did I get used to this? metallica added all that!? then found secret treaties an thought OH YEAH, this is it... this is good too, but suffers in my opinion from lack of the riff I know n love...

  • I'm a Metallica fan, their version is GREAT, but the original is AWESOME.

  • i prefer metallica version :)

  • Didn't hear this version yet, is so cool. I probably still prefer the original (Secret Treaties') but this is very nice to listen to. A bit more rocker.

  • Imaginos - a fine comeback album after the squalor of Mirrors, Revolution, and Ninja - thanks to the GREAT Albert Bouchard. They should have retired after thisrecord, with their reputation returned.

  • This version has some very cool textures in the background, but what possibly can beat the '74 version's epic belting of "astronomyyyyy" in the last minute??

  • @geckoslick I agree, the original had the most epic ending ever. All versions of this song are brilliant though, whether it's the Secret Treaties version, the Metallica cover or the one from Imaginos. They're all different, but there's something about this song that makes it awesome even when it's changed around and altered.

  • Jak to nierzadko bywa - jakość filmiku sprawia wrażenie nagrania kserem z mojego wydziału, ale kawałek i klip zawsze uwielbiam.

  • The Secret Treaties version (original) is my favorite.

  • I think this is better than any other version. Btw, Metallica s-s-sucks!

  • This is my favorite version of Astronomy. I really like the rocking version better than the slow version.

  • Wow! If it wern't for the Metallica tribute, I would have never known of this song's existance. It makes me wanna listen to the Secret Treaties version now...

  • i prefer metallica version! =)

  • Buck does a nice job on vocals on this version, but it's Eric's song. The original from Secret Treaties blows away all others

  • I love the Stephen King introduction, it just sets the atmosphere and makes the song a lot creepier. I am torn between which version I like better, the one from Secret Treaties or this 80s remake. They're both so amazing on their own.

  • @ryanwmiller11 I found myself faced with the same dilema once upon a time, but now I consider myself lucky to have access to more than one version, period (including covers).

I am REALLY glad this was put up. Back in '88 I bought the original "Not for Sale" demo tape with this intro from a used records & tapes store, but I'm certain the sound quality here is better than I can get from the tape that's over 20 years old.

  • the thing i appreciate 'bout Metallica's version is that the song got me into BÖC

  • This video and the song are deeply marked by the time period in which they were created. Accompanied by the story, it is a true masterpiece, richer than any cover. However, Metallica's version is more palatable to a wider audience. Metallica gave it a more enduring sound. Indeed, had Metallica not covered it, I would never have heard the original.

  • Does anyone know where I can get this version as an MP3? I've looked online and CAN NOT FIND IT and I LOVE this version.

    Thanks.

  • Have they done this version live?

  • ...knowing a bit 'bout the story behind the album... is that a certain winged - tentacled - faced idol at 3:29 ? (...you kno' what I mean... )

    ... ^_^ ...

  • Like gas and oil on a Madman's face

  • @guytitanic ... reason tends to fly away

  • @guytitanic ... reason tends to fly away

  • Nagyon jó! Nem lehet a Metallicával hasonlítani...mind kettő tökéletese, de tény hogy a Metallica tökéletes feldolgozást csinált belőle, de a BOC pedig tökéletesen megírta a zenét :)

  • i like the secret treaties version better

  • @thehomelessman I agree. This has an interesting feel to it though.

  • This is Blue Oyster Cult. Not Metallica. Although this is a remake of the same song from "Secret Treaties". All you Metallica haters who want to bitch about how much Metallica suck (I think they don't) go and do it on one of their videos. Leave the bitching off the BOC videos.

  • I love this bloody album, it's got pop and horror and fantasy and all BOC +Sandy Perlman. What an awesome awesome "concept". Call me Desdanova.

  • like OMG !

I've got this mint 36" x 42" vintage poster w Stephen Kings intro framed on my wall under clear neutral ph vinyl.

    hey , heyhey

    hey , heyhey

    hey , heyhey

  • Sorry...is this a video...I was just picturing my ex girlfriend in a 3 sizes too small "Revolution By Night" T-Shirt....

    IMAGINOS

  • anybody wants to know what this jam is about, google "the soft doctrines of imaginos" by s. pearlman.

    all will be revealed.

    your welcome.

  • this is a great version, but I prefer the original, and I can't understand how someone could like the stupid metallica version

  • metallica flat out ruined this great song.

they wish they could write anything even close to this classic.

    fucking posers.

  • nitro is right on there

  • @nitrohuffer1320 I plenty enjoy both bands. Metalicca has writen some damn good songs, Nothing Else Matters, Fade to Black, The Unforgiven, St. Anger, etc.

  • They have written their own classics. Metallica is actually a great band.

  • @PaltryPete don't get me wrong, now.

metallica WAS a good band....right up until they released the dreaded "black" album. in my opinion- MY OPINION-..they sold out their true fans and their credibility. their original music was great, once upon a time. after 1990, not so great. again....this is just my opinion.

as for the cover songs....they should stay away from classic material by the likes of seeger, thin lizzy, skynerd, and yes, boc.

there's a reason nobody covered stairway to heaven.

  • @nitrohuffer1320

Well, I think you're right... Their first four albums are epic stuff. 'Black Album' wasn't the best, nor the worst. Your opinion is kind of what I think of them, but I just don't think that their newer stuff is awful. Load and ReLoad are OK. St. Anger is almost OK, but Death Magnetic is pretty good. About the covers, you're right. But I think, that it is alright that they made Garage Inc.. They even wrote in the folder of the CD, that they did not take it serious.

  • @nitrohuffer1320

Metallica merely outgrew their spotty young fans. People do change, you know. Do you listen to exactly the same music you did 20 years ago? Why should musicians play it, then? Ridiculous.

  • so whats it about?

  • These stately digs of mine should surely prove a sight.

  • I am a sucker for Buck's vocals on this song. Eric's version is still better than 99% of rock music ever recorded, but this song was meant for Buck's mystical and melodic voice.

  • Is that Stephen King narrating???

  • yes it is

  • This is the best version. Good sound quality, too.

  • It rocks \m/

  • Não gostei desse banda que coisa morta!

  • This version rocks pretty damn hard.

  • @Ace11950

This is the version of Astronomy from the Imaginos release. It's different. My favorite versions of this song are on Some Enchanted Evening and Cult Classics.

  • Awesome song. I believe this to be the order of greatness.

    1. Some Enchanted Evening (Killer solo by BUck)

    2. Imaginos

    3. Metallica

    4. Original

  • This song is so great that every version of it rules. Including this one and Metallica's cover.

  • metallica butchered this song

  • Would love to have this version (with the King intro) on CD. I remember them playing it on the radio and was mad it wasn't on the album.

  • Imaginos.. awesome.. BOC's first REAL 'concept' album...

  • the song is awesome. the 1st verson is mello, then driving, then hard, the 94 remake is flowing,.. this song is omnipotent. awesome stuff.

  • I really like this version.

    It's something new.

It does not have the 'magic' of the old version, but it has much more drive.

    Both version are great.

  • I'm gonna throw a curve ball in here!

Neither this or the original version is my fave.

That would be the very AOR vibe they created with a re-recording of the song for the 'Cult Classic' album.

Give it a chance - it's a very mature version of a classic song.

    As for Metallica? Forget it!

  • i realy need 2 hear more BOC couse ther

singles r awsome.MetallicA is my fave band. but i like the 2 versions about equal cousetheyr so different.they matalli-sized it.

  • The 'Imaginos' album wasn't meant to be a Blue Oyster Album,I believe they went in and redid a few parts, vocals,a guitar part here and their with Donald Roeser and Eric Bloom and released it as a Blue Oyster Cult Album, but it still shines as a great record.

  • .....I prefer the original because I grew up with that version. You perfer the Metalica version because you heard it first or grew up with them. At some point in the future when you become my age some hip hop rapper will cover "Enter Sandman" and you will see the same world thru my eyes.

  • I grew up with that first version as well. And loved it from the very beginning! But I don't think, that is the only reason for the unchangeable quality of that best version. I really think, that the very first take of Astronomy has a magic, that never can be reached again, not by Metallica and not even by BÖC themselves...;-)

This 'Imaginos'-version sounds constructed and less inspired. The version from 'Secret Treaties' still makes me shiver today. This one doesn't.

  • this version sounds more 80's. i like this 1

  • your ignoks are wise and true.... !{yo yo! exit...light enter..night, [word up],take my F*%ing hand, gangsta naverland..word!

  • ROFLMAO!

  • i take my hand and give up

i forget my hand, haha, handsomeness

    i give u my hand ,

    man

    the hiding place r here

  • It's Metallica

  • :D:D:D

  • Huh. That is Stephen King speaking the intro.

  • I was a big metallica fan in 90's, Metallica cover is definitely the best in my opinion, though metallica has not written anything worth listening to since 1991, so please all of you get a life and enjoy music. MTV made Metallica mainstream, also the same MTV killed music, it's all about image nowadays.

  • Some of Metallica's most dynamic music was on Load and ReLoad. Your misconceptions have also apparently stopped you from listening to Death Magnetic, which will go down in history as one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Mainstream didn't kill Metallica, and in fact Metallica isn't dead. Not sure how you can make a comment like "Metallica has not written anything worth listening to since 1991" and follow it up with "Get a life and enjoy music."

  • I have Load and Reload and Death Magnetic. If I had written these songs or any other unknown Band, they wouldn't even get a record deal let alone Dominating the charts. You and me have different history books I guess, Death Magnetic go down in history very deep and fast just like load and Reload. Memory Remains and Mama Said being my favourites but they are not metal. These two albums are Distorted Folk/ Country Music. Death Magnetic is distorted noise nothing else.

  • changes r going 2 happen for 1 reason or onother everything will change. metallica did take a small turn 4 the worst in load but they were trying new things at the time they had completly concored the music they played so they branched out into other{not always better} terotory. i think the worst MET. albums R load & anger but they still have at least 5 enjoyable songs on each!! way above average!! everybody elss albums have only four faverable songs. MetallicA rule!

  • Load, Reload, and St. Anger SUCKED. I have a life, I enjoy music, but I didn't enjoy the BobRock era of Metallica. All totally irrelevant, since *this* is a BLUE OYSTER CULT SONG I'm listening to...

  • This video is epic! epic song, again I prefer the metallica cover, but tbh they are almost two different songs, allthough the same, done with such different voices and sounds... I am going through a little bit of "tunnel vision" myself but im 22 and seen liked such a range of music, its just to have a talented band to emerse yourself in occasionally!

  • why is it metallica fans get "tunnel vision", and become hardcore fans? metallica must be doing something right, i was a hardcore fan until, i took the plunge into the unknown abyss of the music world, as scary as it was, i now listen to music ranging from classical to hip hop, but i still hate mainstream poppy shit, it still sounds the same.

  • really emotional!!!

  • a bad time story!!! great!!!!Astronomy forever!!

  • I used to be a hardcore Metallica fan (when I knew NOTHING about music) as a young teenager. Always liked their version, its a respectable tribute, but I must say, this version just has a feel about it - and the guitar soloing is great. Blue Oyster Cult f*cken rocks.

  • are you saying that you liked metallica because you knew nothing about music. therefore meaning that metallica sucks?

  • not necessarily, but i guess you can say that - i had tunnel vision back in my metallica obsessed days - i thought they were the greatest and i also thought kirk hammett was a god - but now things have changed and i listen to EVERYTHING

  • @ tseekr379

Lol, I'm going through those teenage Metallica obsessed days right now. And boy are they good! :D

    This version rocks too though!

  • @tseekr379 that basically the same as me... although its kinda weird when my friends and i are the only teenagers at a BOC concert

  • @tseekr379 You are absolutely right!

  • Are you kidding me? I've been a die hard BÖC fan since I was a kid, but Metallica's version kicks some serious ass! It is quite a fitting tribute to one of the most underrated bands ever assembled.

  • Saying metallica's version sucks is quite ignorant. They did a great job with it and as others have said, it's quite a respectable tribute to BOC.

  • To say either version sucks is ignorant. (granted that one likes at least one version) They are so similar, Metallica's version doesn't stray too far at all.

I like having variety in hearing versions of epic songs.

  • @StoreCredit Actually, saying something "sucks" is not ignorant. Apart from using the word "sucks" there is nothing wrong with her/her statement. However, saying someone is ignorant for stating an opinion is ignorant. Regardless of however "respectful" Metallica's performance was (I loved it) if someone doesn't like it, you don't have the authority to question their intelligence. Anyway, this is an ojay version... In my OPINION.

  • Needs more cowbell!

  • Who gives a shit?

  • i could care less who does. really i dont

i still like blue oyster cult but i like metallicas cover better. if you dont like what i think about it then dont comment on it

  • hey its my opinion and im not gonna keep arguin back and forth with people about a song like 2 year olds

    so watever

  • just shut the hell up, if you like maetallicas so much go watch it instead of commenting here nobody cares

  • fuck off dickhead

dont reply to my comment if you dont like it

    and check your spelling genious

  • Its actually spelled genius. (Nothing against you.)

  • the only thing you can resort to is spelling? your sad. you comment like that on the blue oyster cult video. you came to this video to comment like that? dude just go watch metallica then. i came here to watch BLUE OYSTER CULT and not here metallica's version.

  • Is there really a problem just pointing out a misspelled shit?

  • i was talking to ladzepplica1

  • dude you have now brought much more about metallica into this video than before, there are other versions of this song and just because you are not a metallica fan dosent mean you have to show us how much of an assfuck you are by being a dick. soooooo calm the fuck down all the dude says was he likes metallicas better, is he hurting you in anyway? no so shut your shithold you call a mouth and enjoy the music

  • One great thing about this version is the fast, chugging baseline. Not only does it sound great, it also propels the song forward. And besides that, there are so many other things that set this song apart. The BOC is a truly remarkable group.

  • amazing early metal song

  • 1988 wouldn't exactly make it early metal. And the original from the 1974 album Secret Treaties wasn't nearly this heavy (although there were heavy songs on the album - "Harvester of Eyes" and "ME 262" come to mind.)

  • Imaginos- one of my favorite albums.

  • i have the lp record and that version is mush slower?

  • This is from the Imaginos CD, not from Secret Treaties. They recorded two different versions.

  • You probably have one of their earlier records, they redid this and some of their songs on Imaginos a while later.

  • wow i expected BOC's version to sound softer with with some nice acoustic guitaring and some soft vocals to it but really good nonetheless. i can see what metallica were thinking when they wanted to do a cover of this song.

  • Beautiful work. The Stephen King Prologue really adds to the mod too. Because of this video I bought the Imaginos album and I've been listening to it ever since.

  • I think the lead work on this version is fantastic. Feel, technique and a brilliant natural sound. Love all versions of the song...... because it a brillianly written piece of music.

  • The Album art is a pic of "The Cliff House" in San Francisco. Most if not all of this album was recorded and mixed in the basement studios under this famous restaurant. I have the original Imaginos Poster with the Shephen King qoute nest to the "Dark Cliff House".

  • It does look familiar to me (I'm a San Francisco resident). Thanks for the info. What else is on this album?

  • Astronomy was originally slated to be on the Imiginos album, which was delayed many times until it was finally released in 1988. The song made its first appearance on the album Secret Treaties in 1974, along with the song Subhuman, which was originally titled Blue Oyster Cult ( and from which the band took its name after the Soft White Underbelly Name got tied up with Elektra records). The one from 74 had the piano and Eric singing, while this one has Buck singing.

  • This version seems different than the one I have. The beginning is played on a nice piano.

  • both versions rock but of course the original is ALWAYS better!

  • Metallica is pure bullshit!

  • metallica is awesome, but they chose to cover astronomy BECAUSE boc played it so great

  • "Call me Destinova..." fave bit of the song.

  • Sandy Pearlman is the guy who was behind the whole Imaginos saga and Albert Bouchard wanted to make a solo album out of the Imaginos poem saga but the record label wantd it to be BOC album so it got altered.

  • Is there (has anyone made) a video of the original version - not this pop-version?

    (Metallica's version is ok...)

  • I must severely disagree. The version on Secret Treaties was not nearly as good. I always thought the best song on that album was "Flaming Telepaths".

  • Metallica cover version is just awful. I saw BOC perform this live during the Imaginos tour...it completely destroys the original (or any cover for that matter). Awesome song!!

  • Oh come on... their cover is good.

  • its true

  • The video quality is shit. you can't see much. but from what i can tell i would like to see it in a better quality. The scenes i can acknowledge are beautiful work

  • i just saw these guys with skynyrd in NJ. BOC was amazing

  • I think I prefer the metallica cover to this, but this is a little too 70s pop for me. I prefer the live one here ( 5V7KPZtcOVQ - put it after the = on the youtube url) although I do like the intro narration by Steven King.

  • oy. 1988. The Original was from the seventies...

  • Well hell, this is certainly the bedtime story for my kids.

  • I like this version better than the original. I liked the original's beginning better, and the halt near the end of the song just before the chorus of "Astronomy..... of stars...." is sung over and over, but aside from that, I prefer this upbeat version more.

  • Wow ! I love this song. When I was a teenage, I like to listen this song. BOC is a special band. Great!

  • Most images were shot in San Francisco at and around the "Cliff House" ! BOC made a cool poster with the Stephen King intro and I own the minty original framed on my wall. Image search Cliffhouse. Martins beach near Half Moon Bay was used for some beach footage as well. Peace Love Harmony

  • Took Joe Satriani to make this song move. Original was like listening to the Grateful Dead.

  • This is when Bands were bands and videos were videos. One of the greatest bands of all time.

  • Eric Bloom sang the original version, but Buck Dharma sings this one.

  • underrated thats for sure... there older stuff is still the best though.. back when they kicked as$

  • ALBERT! YOU FARKIN ROCK!

  • ...listening to this album is the most legal HIGH you can get without breaking the law!

  • Why did it take me so long to see this?! I loved this album in high school (I probably listened to it a little too much). It's hard to figure out which characters in the video correspond to those in the liner notes. Thanks for uploading it.

  • I don't know if I prefer the cover by Metallica or the original

  • I don't think you should have to choose. It just depends on your mood or the tone and pace of whatever else you're listening to at the time.

  • It's like Pantera's to Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan, a truly equal set of takes..

however, I really dig this blue oyster cult version now that I've heard it, too.. wanna get into a bunch of things related that I've come across, now..peace-!

  • Secret Treaties was absolutely one of the best rock albums ever. I pretty much destroyed my lp from listening to it so much. This version is good but I still much prefer the original. It's faster and nastier, and I can live without all the 'hey hey's here.

  • astronomy was originally on secret treaties but this is a good rework

  • I hope so. This was the most underated group ever. They totally rocked but you almost never heard of them anywhere. Not even the radio.

  • The greatest concept album ever(sorry The Wall)sadly out of print. Albert Bouchard will get his due next century; BOC will enjoy Beethoven-like status.
