  • Looks asome dude good work in progress

  • @southernprepper1 Have you heard of earthships. There is a guy in New Mexico that constructs self sustaining homes. They provide their own water, electricity, are surrounded with earth for thermal mass, grow food, etc, made from recycling materials. I would be interested in what you thought of them.

  • I would love a little "Bag End" like this. My wife, on the other hand, is firmly opposed to the idea and would likely bury me in it. Ha!

  • I don't get the benefit of building a house this way ? I will not be hidden. It's not really underground, its buried with exposed wooden ends which can burn. It will certainly be cool in summer but there has got to be better ways than this.

  • @ScanMan1967 this is what the owner wants so its his money and he gets what he wants.

  • @ScanMan1967 its still being made guy

  • I love it. Has anyone ever thought about doing something like that with culverts.. I was thinking about using very large galvanized culverts with cement floors.

  • @hurtunow google "Utah Shelter Systems".

  • you know, it is neat. Im just wondering what the cost is on it so far?

  • i'm sure it'd be great in case of a flood...

  • Wow, they have to bring in a lot of fill to cover that area. Is the project still progressing?

  • @RDJim yes still under construction.

  • The hobbits would be proud.

  • Thats beautiful.

  • How do preppers deal with construction permits and the like?

  • @tsilb You get one. This has a engineered stamp on the drawings so the local inspectors just go by what the structural engineers says.

  • @southernprepper1 you know you could do this much cheaper and easier way, instead of having to build all of that just buy a shipping container, its perfect for anything trust me, go around youtube and look at some shipping container ideas.....there are amazing things to be done with those

    great video by the way

  • @ColomboNinja I used to think so too, but if you look into it all of the real strength of a shipping container is on the edges and corners. Without reinforcement all along the walls they will end up collapsing.

  • @geistknife your joking right? what are you talking about the "edges and corners" being the only strong thing, do you even know what shipping containers are used for? they are loaded up with thousands of pounds inside each container and then each container is stacked up ontop of each other with literally tons of weight ontop of them for years yet they remain intact without any damages and you think some dirt ontop of it will crush it and end up collapsing without extra reinforcement? read more

  • @tsilb My retreat is on "unrestricted" property, so I don't really need permits. I'm working on an underground shelter, built out of an old fuel tank on my property. The tax surveyor's been out there since the project began almost three years ago and my taxes have NOT changed. Look for "unrestricted" property. This will save you alot of headaches on permits and the like.

  • wow.. would love to have the disposable income to create something like this :P lucky bastard im jelous.

  • actually, I just thought about my own question. If I was a country attacking America, I would send pretty much all my nukes to places that are "the middle of nowhere" that where all us country bumpkins are holding on to our guns, Bibles/Book of Mormons, and copies of our Constitution.

  • I am not dogging anything about this place, except it's location, I am a prepper and as far as fallout goes you just have to stay inside till a rain comes, I wouldn't waste money on this type of structure, when it could go to something way more useful. Does anybody actually think that some other country is going to waste a nuke on "the middle of nowhere"?

  • Comment removed

  • kinda built like the old nazi bunkers .pretty nice

  • Would this serve as effective protection during a Nuclear Fallout, once complete?

  • @Gamerchimp It would be okay. They are adding a mechanical room on the back and this will have no windows so this would be the best area to ride it out. But there is better design than this.

  • @southernprepper1 Ok. Im thinking, once I'm older (and eventhough I live in the UK), I want to build a Bunker styled building, or basement. Would you suggest any specific Designs? As I know that an arched ceiling is more robust than a flat one.

  • Check out "earthbag house" (on youtube link didnt work) Ive heard they are cheap and very strong..

  • There is a company called armour homes that specializes in this kind of thing, they can do a two story house for 150k or so fully built and finished with electrical, appliances, flooring etc.

  • I WANT ONE!!!!!

  • How much would something like this cost. You guys are great and fully prepared. Im new to this so watching you guys im in awe

  • It's the same way weapons storage facilities were underground on Conn Barracks in Europe... Good enough for nukes anyway...

  • This is an earthberm structure and not underground. It will save alot of money on heating and cooling. It will be very nice in the location it is.

It looks like a PBS building "kit" that the owner puts together.

  • Also, do you have a graphic of what is suppose to look like when done?

  • can i ask how much has it cost so far? Im looking for land and I would like to do something like this. I would like to get an idea how much more I need to get...

  • This is interesting and awesome. I didn't know anyone built these home anymore. Thanks can't wait till see the finished home

  • That is cool. I can't wait to see it finished.

  • I can't wait to see the finished product.

  • I've been looking at a system very similar in construction style to this. I loved how much can be done yourself versus having it all done by contractors. Thanks for the vid!

  • I like it. I saw a documentary about prefab shelters. Some as low as $60,000. Iknow that seems like a lot but consider the price of building one. The prefabs come setup with plumbing and elect. I would rather build it myself. But to each their own.

  • That is like having a safe with a wood door on the front. I also don't get it. They spent all that money and would have been better off building a cabin with a cement room in the basement. Would have looked better and been more secure. Oh well..

  • Yeah would love seeing vids on this progressing. Very interesting stuff!

  • Nice structure. Looks like it will be cool in the summer.

  • that is so cool.

  • very cody lundin-esque.. I was hoping this would be a full underground shelter, but it should be very energy efficient and storm-worthy. Will last for centuries

  • Won't it run the risk of roots breaking through the walls and roof?

  • Is there a name for this sort of building...the mesh, burlap technique? Something I can put in google? Thanks.

  • pretty cool will look like a hobbit house from lord of the rings.

  • It looks above ground LOL.

  • no way i could afford that, im having a time getting water, beans, rice, and some weapons together lol. looks cool though.

  • Great vid...looks cool.

  • Nice like to keep seeing updates on this.

  • cool house.......wouldnt take much to heat and cool that thing

  • I don't know if lighting has already been decided but I would look into fiber optic. It can be gathered above ground run thru conduit then distributed thru out structure. This would facilitate lighting during daytime hours for free. Light transmission thru fiber is awesome so a little would go along way especially with use of magnifying lenses. Still looks like a sound structure but like you said expensive. Good luck guys, Praise God and God Bless America.

  • Are they sealing the concrete with something? concrete sometimes has a tendency to wick moisture though its self (i have seen this in incorrectly laid foundations) especially when there is a big heat differential on either side of the concrete. seems like there could be some mold issues from water wicking though from the soil on top. Just curious.

  • thanks for geting back to this .i have been wating to see how it was going thank you

  • ¡great!

  • That took a lot of time, money and effort for something that is not even under ground. The dirt will just slide off the concrete after the first rain? I don't get it?

The entrances are not fireproof or ballistic proof. There is no "safe room" despite all the concrete. What is the point? Thanks for the update, I would like to see the finished product.

  • @prescottbill You have some good points....the dirt will be thick at the bottom and then go up from there. It will not slide off because they will put ALOT around it. But yes I would have modified it to make it more secure thats for sure.

  • @southernprepper1 The secret is sod. Also, did Cody put you up to this? He did say he was going to turn you into a hippy come hell or high water. Lol! Still, It'll be a comfortable temp all year long. I don't see a wood stove outlet on the roof, though. No fire inside?

  • @southernprepper1 The underground house may not seem 100% secure as prescottbill points out, but could be quickly made so if the right mat'ls are kept somewhere safe. (Framing/ cinderblock/ quickcrete etc.) Iron gates could be added very easily at this point for instance. And if things get worse, the owner could completely bury/block off all but a single discreet entrance. I hate how naysayers always seem to nitpick your ideas like those who critisized your NatGeo show! Your on TV for a reason!

  • can you give us a ruff estimate of how much this cost?? just curious

  • Thanks for sharing this. It's really neat! I love projects that are "outside of the box". My husband and Iwould like our next house (if there ever is one) to be a berm house built into a southern-facing hill. The heating and cooling savings factor is what we'd be most interested in. I try to do this with animal shelters too.

  • The owner should spray the concrete with polyrea first. Polyrea will waterproof the concrete. Drainage near the wall bottom should be considered. JMHO.

Thanks for showing this. It is lovely structure.

  • yeah I don't get it, why go through all the effort to build it "under ground" when it is only going to be partially underground?

  • @Relativisticism Trust me I keep thinking the same thing everytime I see it. But you cant argue with the owner. My buddy who is the contractor just goes off the plans. The old saying "The customer is always right" but it still will drive you crazy.

  • @southernprepper1 Maybe they just wanted to live like hobbits for the sheer fun of it? Die hard Tolkien fans? :)

  • @southernprepper1 ... what are they going to treat the walls with and how will they do water/septic? I love the idea but I'm afraid it's waaay too much money for someone like me to even consider. Just buying property with no building or water/electricity is too much for me.

  • @mikemorrison281 They have a well and septic. This is way to much money for the average person. Yes get a piece of land and build something that is more afforable.

  • @southernprepper1 ...thanks for the quick reply! Am really learning alot from your videos. Trying to get a group of folks together here in the Houston area...I've started thinking about coming up with a standardized list of "have's" so that everyone in the "group" will have the same kinds of tools, machines, storage containers, etc...easy to swap or canabilize for parts when everyone has the same make/model. Have you done this type of thing? Thanks again, God bless!

  • patio on a fallout shelter?

  • Design a spherical or eggshape for the rooms and hallways.... have the floors leveled so u have space in the floor.... u can run all your interior power air and anything else under you feet;) cheers

  • wouldnt the concrete eventualy succum to water penetration?

  • What is the approx. sq footage?

  • tell no one the location

  • really cool I was hoping you would do another update on this. Can't wait to see more. thanks

  • Will there be plumbing of any kind? I didn't notice anything "stubbed in."

  • @AppalachianFreedom Yes kitchen and bathroom...its stubbed in I just past over it to fast. There is also pex in the floor to run hot water thru for heat. The whole floor is like this so it will be nice on your feet.

  • @southernprepper1 -- EXCELLENT!

  • would you go over the cost of something like that so the avg person knows what they might need to save to get something like that? Thanks

  • I don't get it. It seems to be built on ground level.

By "underground" do you mean it's going to be covered with earth, or is it just in a really big dip in the terrain?

I can see the ground rising up in the video but it seems like a massive volume of earth would need shifting to fill it.

Its pretty damn cool either way. Good effort.

  • @Marktheshtfgenius It was cut out of the hill and then they are going to cover it with dirt. They will build walls around the entrances to keep the dirt away from it.

  • @southernprepper1 Badass.I want one!

Any idea how much dirt will be over it? Just curious as to what layers will be surrounding the structure, if any on top of the concrete.

Personally, if i was going to the effort of building an underground shelter, i'd make it good against fallout.

Each to their own, i guess.

  • thats bad ass. I wouldnt have windows though! I would have lots of candles. candles are cheap.

  • @g3seifert I much favour wind-up lanterns. They don't smell, are healthy, don't deplete any oxygen, don't set fire to stuff and will last much longer.

I don't know about the US, but in the UK they can go for as cheap as £6. That's about $10 i think these days.

  • The cheapest is earth dome homes and they are great! Use the tubes they are much easier than the bags.

  • Ver cool. The roundish windows and door remind me of a Hobbit house..lol I used to really want a house built into a hillside, well Iknid of still do..lol I wanted mine more for the energy savings than for any disaster, but it would have workedwell there as well. Thanks for sharing!

  • bilbo baggins would be proud

  • @mysciencenow I think peter jackson is the owner.

  • @mysciencenow That's exactly what it is.

  • dude, thats cool...!

    Looking forward to the updates...

    J.

  • Awsome!

  • way cool...

  • Excellent. Concrete pretty easy to do.Get the frame, spray the mix on.Job done. It is a relatively new idea so i guess that will be a showhouse. Looks great.

  • My husband says NO ROUND DOORS THOUGH.

  • I like hobbit houses!

  • Hey your right it does look like the hobbit house from Lord of the rings o.O

  • So I guess the real question here is....Where's my room at in there? Lol. Nice project. I'm gonna have to settle for digging a big hole in the ground and adding blocks etc. But hey, whatever works right?

  • SP1 you are FREAKING AMAZING!!! :D

  • Only the elite survive right?? I wonder why they are so affraid? I guess they want to hang around and protect thier money! LOL

  • Very cool project.

  • This looks more like an earth-sheltered house. While that is much better then an ordinary wooden house, a true underground house would be much superior. (maybe more expensive though)

Somewhere on the net I saw a quonset hut structure that is inflatable, and the walls already contain a concrete mixture. After inflation, it's just a matter of hosing it down, making sure it all gets soaked, and then waiting a few days for the concrete to cure. Sorry I don't have the link.

  • @mrbr549 That's called Concrete Canvas! The problem with something like that is you need a fork lift to carry it to its resting spot. But if you can get building material there, you can get the canvas there. You can also ad to it later making it longer. This is the best bang for your buck in my eyes.

  • poor folks are screwed, in other words

  • Curious way to build with concrete...

  • how much has it cost so far?

  • Its gonna be a hobbit hole.

  • Thumbs up, I like this idea...I will be making the same thing, but, I will use shipping containers (3 or 4 high cube 8'x9.5'x40')

I like the idea of placing the containers above ground, shoot them with insulating foam tho prevent rust and then shoot concrete over it, then cover them with dirt

This process is cheaper than digging a hole and the cost for a shipping container is around 2-3 grand

  • Very Interesting.

  • Cool video, love to see prepper ideas,I would think a undergrounds structure would be better for radiation and protection, would not want above ground structure.love this video and you placing it on utube.

  • I'm dreaming of such a secret under ground structure as we speak but money is a huge problem for me. but i'm looking into other options that would at least be fallout proof. I'm thinking storage container and making it air tight/water tight some how. Thanks for the vid

  • Kind of pointless to do all the earth and concrete with all those wooden openings. If were going earth and concrete, I would build it as an underground bunker, intended to support full out nuclear war. No reason to half ass it. He could have saved a bunch and just went for a cabin structure, it would have been about the same.

  • thats sweet, nice little cabin to go to on the weekends

  • Thanks for posting. I love seeing these projects even if I can't buld one myself.

  • Nice!

  • Pretty cool! Yes, it's out of my price range too...lol

  • How many pounds per a foot can it take? mind is and arch too, the best takes a lot of pres, I live in Colorado and the heat can get bad so I also put mine under ground

the same temp almost year round some times have to lite off the wood stove foe 1&2 weeks in winter You know what my heating bill is ? My back Ha Ha LOL The world can kiss off God I feel GREAT!! Life is GOOD

  • Did I see some kind of overhead vent?..or a skylight?

  • where are the gun ports?

  • Nice place.

Now the f=Bidiots are linguistic-programing people that "preppers" are "domestic...".

Look what happened to J4patriot if you think their playing.

It always reminds me of the old saying about "when the nazi's came for ......, I did nothing, because I wasn't a.....".

And then there is all the predictive programing for the "lone wolf" crap too.

Yesterday I even saw some MSM news story on "bio/wep's".

Hell of a time to live in.

  • awesome so far i believe i would a made the ends block if i already concreted the whole thing and stucco the exposed block walls in a color but thats just me. Those are some awesome windows

  • southernprepper1, love your videos! Keep 'em coming!

  • Super awesome :)

  • Very, very nice!

  • Its looking good so far good job cant wait to see it done
