If the smoke gets trapped then so does the heat. As I said this is my favourite winter shelter and therefore trapping the heat is my main concern. Also if I am laying down then the smoke is not a problem.
i love to use a larger tarp than that and put a second bend in at the base of the back-slope and get a 'G' shaped set up; use the bit at the bottom as a ground-sheet and the back as a wall then the top front eave to shelter me, the eave being angled at approx 30 to 50 degrees!
@oregonmikes Thats is a great idea Mike. I have never done that, but will do in future. I do cover the back edge to seal any holes and to keep the wind out.
Where I live, it was 40ish degrees f on monday, and it is now -24 degrees f today!

That is my fav. tarp set up also, it works great for three seasons of the year. Plenty of room to sit up inside.

looks very useful!
Is that set up with paracord alone? And how do you secure it to the ground?

I like that setup also. I usually use a stick to dig a small trench to make to the rainwater flows away from the backside.

What are the specs on your tarp, Sean? Is your tarp fire retardant?
enjoythewildUSA 3 months ago
@enjoythewildUSA
This tarp is one you buy from home depot. They are not fire retardant. Cheap but tough. $9.00
seanmulhall 3 months ago
yeah, that's probably better than down the middle. Your hat's bad ass man.

Like that setup. More open than an A frame and more protection than a straight sided lean-to
