It wasn't unions which caused the demise of American steelmaking. It was the American nearsightedness, protectionism, refusal to innovate, to specialize and conservativity which caused it. Europeans and Japanese were in the business to make steel, Americans were in business to make money. In the long run it was more profitable to make steel than money.
@MDProgger yeah, I have in fact tried sunrise pizza.......awesome stufff...especially the deep dish, probably the best this side of chicago. YTown....the little Gotham.
@mkjarobinson you forgot linguine..calamari and greens..that's what YOUNGSTOWN is really all about..don't forget FRANKIE RACK..RACK, short for RACKET..that too is what YOUNGSTOWN, is all about..
Im from boardman and i would always take a little drive through youngstown and just see everything and it just makes you sad to see this video and think this city used to be amazing sight to see and know its just a bunch of torn up buildings i always cry thinking what it used to be
My g-g-grandfather was the Supervisor of one of the Mills, and McDonald Village is named for him. I wish I had known the city he knew, but I do know he loved Youngstown, and the men who worked for him...and by all reports, they loved him in return.
I was born and raised in Warren, Ohio. Now I spend 3-5 days a week in Youngstown, and it makes me sad every time I drive past the abandoned mills and all the boarded up houses. It's hard to believe that you could once walk through Youngstown without being afraid you'd get shot or robbed.
My 2-great grandfather was Thomas G. McDonald (for whom McDonald Village was named). My g-grandfather also worked the mills, as did my grandfather. I think of them when I hear this song.
My Home town I lived a good life there when I was a child My dad was a steel worker I remember the sky seemed liked it was on fire when they poured the steel. Could of been my life story. Left for good after I graduated YSU. Still go back sometimes this song is so true it breaks my heart !!!
My family grew up there too, my uncle still lives there. My old man worked at Republic Steel and was on the Fire Department later for several years. Both parents and most aunts and uncles went to YSU, grandpa taught there and was a Unitarian Minister. Actually going back to visit next week. Beautiful song, always makes me cry. The pictures were perfect man.
