Go ahead and use that stuff in engines with fuel delivery/management systems designed for it.

However, you force me to put that in my ATV, expensive boat engine, lawnmower or anything with a carburetor not designed for ethanol.... I get really pissed.

Higher octane means more power, not more mpg.

The engine will work more efficient, thats true.

Maybe you only gain more mpg in FFV's, because I've tested it in 4 ordinary cars and the got about 150km LESS on a full tank!

And its only cheaper in the states and Brazil.

In Europe, E85 costs €1,80/L and petrol is €1,65/L....so its not worth it

Wrong! Mixing gas and e85 to achieve about 30% ethanol will result in equal or greater MPG in most flex fuel vehicles. This is because of the higher octane from the mixture and that the engine is more efficient with the higher octane.

"big oil" doesn't make as much money as you might think. motor fuels sells for market price, after that, distributors and pump owners jack up the prices, not to mention the govts do too. 38.3-47.6 cents/gal tax to cover state/fed/local taxes. NOW, who's the bad guy and making all of the money....look it up to see what the market for fuels is and calculate the taxes/middleman profit and see what it's going for at the pump. have a great day

If ALL THE CORN in the US were converted to Ethanol every year, it is estimated it would only supply 1/8th of our gasoline demand. Never mind the EROEI of corn-based ethanol is barely break-even...

It's even worse than that. Even if we used all switchgrass E85 ethanol.

Not only would it require about 1/6th of the US landmass to plant.

But it would only reduce CO2 emmisions by about 4 %, and it would actually increase Smog forming ozone.

All while using 3x as much water as what goes over niagra every year.

fyi, e85 has an octane rating of 105, which means that a 12:1 compression ratio can be used instead of just 9:1 ratio on a normal car. the higher compression ratio means more horsepower. if you used unleaded in the higher compression engine, then it would knock.

I think these guys are missing the point of a Flex Fuel Vehicle (I'm assuming that is what they are driving). E85 is a good idea, but it seems only like a temporary fix to a bigger problem. I will say that it is a good start to get the ball rolling on finding an alternative fuel. These hippies however seem more drawn to the fact that E85 burns a lot cleaner than oil. They don't seem to note the downsides of E85. Nice try guys, but I don't think you are going to change anything.

Seriously, for such a noble objective... these guys buy 2 gallon tanks AND do not know how to use them. Weak. (note: ethanol has ~1/2 the energy density of gasoline... so 2 gallons of ethanol ~= 1 gallon of gasoline).

Wrong. E85 contains 67% the energy as gasoline. By the way everyone cellulose-base ethanol is near C02 neutral (basic biology plants use c02 for food and then it's burnt back into the atmosphere).
