so im starting my natural journey..im not brave enough for the big chop...my hair naturally curls and some one told me about deva curl set it free and no poo and the conditioner it helps my curls being that my hair is still procesed but i fell in love with the product. everybody go try it..
I love it I wasn't sure at first because I love your hair, but that just goes to show that you are not afraid of being versatile!!! You are so beautiful and innovative!!! Love you
I love your cut. I have been transitioning for 18months and I have to cut!!! I am so inspired by you..I wanted to go 2years but I think I may have to go sooner. Wishing I lived in NY right now...
I recently experience heat damage on my first blow out after 2years of no heat. I was so hurt. I wanted to cut my hair. I learned to work with my hair so I cut several straight pieces of my hair. Then, I use 2 egg and a load of conditioner then sit under the steamer. After the steamer, I rinse my hair with apple cider vinegar. My curls are popping again. I still have a little more cut in a few months. I learned my lesson...NEVER trust a beautician who tells you" She knows what she's doing!"
I had a great experience at DevaChan yesterday. My stylist was Mary Ann and No-Poo tech was Julia. It was the first time in years that someone was honest with me. Mary Ann showed me all the bad spots (breakage). She explained that the hair in my crown area is not growing because of breakage. She put things into perspective. I'm going to use the DevaChan products because nothing else I've tried has worked to prevent the breakage. CAN ANYONE HELP??? I'm going to get NeXXus Emergency today.
@azurine569 Have you tried giving that area regular scalp massages and treating it with tea tree oil or peppermint oil. Herbal treatments like Alma and lime should help as well. Has there been any changes yet?
TAREN CUT BACK ON THE HEAT to Once a Week Minimum, USE A REAL CERAMIC IRON and Use a HEAT PROTECTOR to Minimize HEAT DAMAGE. Your Cut is Awesome!! YOU LOOK GREAT!!!!
Your hair is BEAUTIFUL! I've been debating on cutting my natural curl, for similar reasons, to have a more defined curl and rid the heat damaged ends. Thanks for sharing!
Please do a review of that chapter!! I just had my friend trim my ends today, I think she did a good job and I really hate paying for haircuts, especially when they don't know the meaning of 'dusting.' I'd feel so much better doing it myself >.<
Hi Taren! Thank you for recording this. I have had the pleasure of meeting April and Gin at DevaChan Salon in Soho and RECOMMEND all curly naturals to check them out! Sorry to hear the application and styling process wasn't for you-your hair is still fabulous! The products ended up working for me, I brought the whole line haha. So far, its all good. Keep the videos coming! Much luv to you and your sons!! Be blessed
Your hair is beautiful! I will be cutting away heat damage as well and you have inspired me to proceed with that process even faster. Simply gorgeous!
@chelleum there's a salon in the rockland area (about 45 min north of manhattan its the county west of westchester) and its called rapunzel hair salon in tallman...the stylist's name is debbie and she's deva trained...cuts start at $45!! she's brilliant!
Shoot, for $95.00, I would've just got a dry cut too! Lol. No one can do ur hair the way u like it once u start doing ur own hair. I love the cut. I just big chopped after 11 months of transitioning due to "life changes" in my life right now also. Hopefully the next time u run into ur heat damage enemy, it'll be a long ways away for u!
i love that hair cut, i had my fro cut like that once before and i think im going to do it again next weekend becuase it's time for a cut, not a trim or shape up but cut, but now i want to go there and get it done and i live all the way in miami
Wow, Taren your haircut looks great! I did the same thing recently. I had some damage on my ends ( pieces that wouldn't curl back along the strand), and I began to no longer care about the length. I just wanted healthy strands from root to tip. I did a 2nd mini chop in February. The shape looks good and it's growing nicely. Again your hair is gorgeous and I enjoy your videos.
Ooooh, the whole time I was watching that chick cut your hair I kept thinking "man - she seriously knows what she's doing, for real!!" Beautiful cut, fierce on you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love your videos! I went yesterday to Madusalon in San Francisco to get a DevaCut! I absolutely love my hair! I had the same problem you did, with my curls going straight at the ends. I am giving up the flat iron and embracing my curls! Thank you again :-D
I love your hair cut! I'm going through the same problem but it's only small pieces in the back . I know how you feel when you can't rock your hair the way you want to. I am considering the "Deva cut". You gave me hope. Thanks!
Love the cut. I've decided to grow out my relaxer bec I can see how thin my hair is getting. My length is about 20incs so I can't say I will be doing a big chop. What I'm doing is staying away from heat and just twisting after it's washed. Can u give me any advise? Thanks!
I LOVE your hair!!! It is beautiful!!!!!!!! I have been transitioning for about 6 months and have about 3 inches of new growth and 6 inches of relaxed hair. I really need help!! I have been wearing braid outs and flat irons. I'm really pressed for time so you have any suggestions?
Love your channel so much, and I visit often. I can sympathize with your decision to do a semi-big chop. I recently reluctantly did one because I wanted a whole new head of hair-a totally different color. Been coloring the premature grey. Couldn't seem to get the dark hair to lighten without using harsh chemicals so opted to cut it all off and start over. I miss my hair but don't regret the decision. Your thick, healthy full head of hair is even more BEAUTIFUL!
I've wanted to buzz all my hair off for the longest time, but I'm white white and even though my curls are pretty crazy, there is no way my hair would look as cute as you or your friend Tiffany's or anyone else who has hair that doesn't just fall flat... if I were to cut mine short, even as short as yours, it wouldn't stand up so nicely. your hair looks incredible!
The lovely lady, Tiffany, on the video did her BC the same time as me, I did mine myself in my bathroom (see Vid) and I love it too. I am a UK natural. Check me out on queenofsheba66 where I give info on what I am doing with my twa and what I use. I have just started rocking the parting too. She looks the Baaamb!! Love your Big Chop xx

I never comment on YT but I have to share this...this is such a beautiful cut! It really makes your face stand out more, you are truly a beautiful person inside and out. You have given me the push I needed to get rid of my heat damaged ends and get my curls back instead of holding on to the length. Thank you for being an inspiration!
I'm mad you cut your hair girl, lol your hair is so beautiful, I just cannot cut my hair it's so psychological LOL...but after seeing this video I really like the cut I'm even considering getting a trim LOL thanks for sharing your experience
also--nothing wrong with changing your mind all the time! i love that you called yourself a "journalist" -- that's exactly what you're doing, sharing the journey of your hair -- not acting like a know-all/be-all of all things natural/curly hair. and we appreciate you for it!
the cut looks AMAZING, taren! the curls are looking fabulous, and i know it's a good feeling to start that healthy curl journey again! it will be back to it's big bad self in no time lol..but in the meantime, it's definitely fun to rock this cute new look!!
Curls will never be the same after each application of heat, each. Eventually you notice that things aren't how they used to be :( Hopefully less heat from here on out? I'm happy you took care of it the way you did. A lot of women are so concerned with length instead of hair health
I was so surprised that you decided to cut your hair! It looks beautiful. I loved seeing the whole process and hearing your friends personal big chop story.
(please read my 1st post first as run out of space)!!!
And shampoos & conditionars that i can obviously buy on line. Ive had my hair naturl for around 7years now and im soooo bored of having a terrible hair day each day i was about to go and get the brazilian blow out, but then u have given me hope... please please please advise me.. Your hairs looks great, i love your videos too.
Hi im so glad i found you. im from the UK and have exactly the same type of hair as u although yrs is in much better condition. Over here our hair products & hair dressers r no way as good as yrs. My hair only looks good for a mere 2 hrs after diffussion and then it gets big frizzy and dry. i very rarely treat it ;-( and wake up looking like a scarecrow!! please please could you recommend some products for both treating and for daily use. Do u have to wash yr hair each day 4it 2look good! xx
I love it!! Its beautiful! I just did the same thing at the begining of December. I just recently started my own youtube channel and i love your channel!!!! I watch your videos all of the time!!! You are beautiful and I enjoy your channel!!!!
Hi, my brother and I would like to know about how much did your haircut cost? He is natural and wears a fro/braided and I am currently a year and 1 month into transitioning to natural. THANKS!
omg... I saw her in Queens today, in my hood. I just have to say You are as beautiful in person as you are online. Your hair is stunning......What a small world indeed.
I'm so jealous. I can not find a stylist to cut my hair for love or money. The last stylist was scared that I would be upset after she cut off most of my hair after I had asked her to. Then she was surprised when I tipped her. Now I trim it myself, but it would be nice to have a professional cut.
i actually LOVE that she "flip flops". she's experimenting and GROWING. i love that she chronicles her natural journey in a real way. i make mistakes and have moments when i don't know what to do about my hair. i love that she shares those frustrations and keeps it genuine. she's awesome! i love the long hair and the new cut. it's all in how you rock it and she ROCKS it lol.
i love your hair cut.. I been natural for 2 yr but wore it straight most of the time, I want to cut my heat damage off but everytime I mention it my boyfriend has a fit!!! how do you handle the man in your life with natural hair.
You were right about April. I went to Devachan today for the first time and she did a great job. The experience was all that you said it was. I liked getting my hair washed while laying down. I also saw MlleCafeAuLait while I was there. It was a pleasure meeting her in person. This video influenced my decision to go to Devachan because you really seemed pleased with the results compared to your video at the Miss Jessie's Salon. Thank you for this video!
haircut looks great! however i do have one question... maybe you misspoke but how does you not having "2 inch hair" have to do with you not being able to give her product suggestions? u can only give suggestions to ppl w/longer hair? just asking! im sure u didn't mean anything by it but, for ppl who've just big chopped & look to you for inspiration that could come off as a turn off. thank you
Hey Tiff, congrats on the decision of the BC! You'll be o.k. cuz Taren will help you through all the hills and valleys that comes with being natural. Yay Taren! my split ends are going to make me do another semi-bc
Cute Cute Cute Video! That's why I connect with you because you try new things but still stay true to the fact that you have natural hair! Not afraid to share your mishaps in trying new things, and not afraid to start over. So many women aren't will to do this! Thank you and all the other Natural hair you tubers for inspiring this new movement that I'm seeing even here in Mpls. Mn., with women of color embracing there own natural hair! I'm so exciting to see this happening! Thanks again for
HONESTLY i didnt think i was gone like it BUT!!! i love it!! mks me wanna go up there and get mine cut cause id trust them based on wha a good job they did on urs.. so pretty. congrats on the heathly curls
You look great dear. I too am thinking of cutting more hair due to the "straightning comb"..Sucks so bad but I'm going to get it done..You really do look great.
GAWjus Taren. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and putting yourself out there - my daughter is 16, biracial, and went flat-iron crazy which wrecked her hair along with "texturizing," no matter how much I and others told her how beautiful her natural hair is. Not only are you our instructor for nursing her hair back to health, but you are our "guide for pride" in her appreciating her natural curls. God bless.
Hey Taren! I'm not sure if you had already answered this question but, and I'm not trying to nosy, roughly how much would a Devachan cut cost? I may be coming to New York soon after graduation and I really need my hair cut and I was wondering roughly how much it would cost to get my hair cut by April? Thank you girl! Oh and I was wondering when you go to get it cut, do you have any product in your hair or do you just wash it and let it air dry? Thank you Taren and stay fly! :D
@Br0wnSgr Oh okay. Thank you soo much! I just saw it! lol I definitely need to save my money! But it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be though. Thank you again! :D
I love the haircut. It is every woman's perogative to chage her mind! lol Devachan tecnique is interesting.I look fwd to your review on the trimming section of the book.x
I did the big chop in the summer with my lil girl. They cut 9 inches and her 4 inches. It felt so much lighter and less time consuming. Amazingly I didn't get much support when folks found out that my daughter and I were getting the chop but afterwards people thought it was cute. Don't you love how much curlier the hair is shorter? You look cute with the new do
You and your haircut are gorgeous! Thank you for saying that you are a hair journalist and not a guru. That whole know it all attitude is such a turn off. I also suffered heat damage in the front of my hair and like you, have no intention of using a flat iron again. Love your vids. Keep 'em coming. Peace.
your hair looks sooo much better now...your stylist did an exceptional job and its good to see your bouncy curls back! cant wait to see the style vids. one love!
i really need to see how u str8n ur hair with a roller set..i sounds so interesting and i have tried it and it didnt happen! so i really need to see that happen if you can make a video about it... id love you forever!!! lol
very nice, and i love the ending! hair journalism...you are allowed to change your mind as much as you like. I did the same thing last april cut heat damaged ends and then I started straightening again. However, I have been using my INSTYLER and no heat damage thus far. Maybe you should try it if u go straight again. anyway ur hair looks great!
I LOVE IT!!!! im about to cut all off my hair because its so damaged, i feel like the Mirena has something to do with it, because since i got it my hair just started to break and fall out! urgh hopefully 2011 will be my hair year! lol
Love the new cut!! KUDOS to April, again. I had her cut my hair about a month ago and I'm loving the results. Thanks for posting her name when you did the first Deva cut video. Keep those curls healthy, Taren : )
Was your hair really curly when you went?

Could you tell Tiffany that im going through the same thing and what has really helped me is natural oils. She should invest in some Jojoba Oil which produces the same sebum and has the same vitamins found naturally in healthy hair and if she wants to add rosemary or lavender to promote circulation and growth she can . This would also be helpful in maintaining your curl patern . I make my own oils so one day I'll have to send you guys some. I hope you found this advice helpful.

Thank you for being an inspiration!

also--nothing wrong with changing your mind all the time! i love that you called yourself a "journalist" -- that's exactly what you're doing, sharing the journey of your hair -- not acting like a know-all/be-all of all things natural/curly hair. and we appreciate you for it!

the cut looks AMAZING, taren! the curls are looking fabulous, and i know it's a good feeling to start that healthy curl journey again! it will be back to it's big bad self in no time lol..but in the meantime, it's definitely fun to rock this cute new look!!

Do u have to wash yr hair each day 4it 2look good! xx

Hi, my brother and I would like to know about how much did your haircut cost? He is natural and wears a fro/braided and I am currently a year and 1 month into transitioning to natural. THANKS!
pamalicious21 1 year ago
@pamalicious21 she paid 95.00 for this haircut ; )

Love it! The short hair looks so much better on you. In my opinion.

i love your hair cut..

Puppylion715 1 year ago
@Puppylion715 it is in the beginning part of the vid in the upper right corner, probanly no more than 4 mins in. or less.

SN: I don't think there is anything wrong with straightening your hair, even with a flat iron. You just can't to do it on a regular bases. :)

Peace.

very nice, and i love the ending! hair journalism...you are allowed to change your mind as much as you like. I did the same thing last april cut heat damaged ends and then I started straightening again. However, I have been using my INSTYLER and no heat damage thus far. Maybe you should try it if u go straight again. anyway ur hair looks great!
