  • really understand what you are doing. and if you do then it's ashame that you don't care. Again I agree that the waters should be protected however I don't think this is really the reason you are doing all this.

  • protect our waters, so stop running your septics from your camps right into the lakes. You say that doesn't have an affect on the water PLEASE it's crap and pee just like you say in the song, stop peeing in OUR waters. Oh well like I said before, let your tax dollars pay for our welfare, or ripe all the young children out of their homes make us all move away and then what? This place is a ghost town. Businesses in Digby and even Yarmouth will feel the affects of it. I don't think you people

  • a little unrealistic, impossible really. You are not trying to protect the enviroment. You are trying to shut us down. As it was said at the meeting in Carlton the other night, don't give them three years, shut em down now. Don't you care about the children involved, that will lose everything their families have worked hard for. This place would be a ghost town. We would all have to move away or go on welfare and then your tax dollars would then have to support us. Again I agree we should

  • I really do love this song, how you say we are trying to destroy your dreams. What are you trying to do to the mink ranchers??? And you say what about our children dont you care about their dreams? What about our children?? Don't you care that you are trying to detroy families and homes by what you are doing? You say you want us to clean up our act but really all you want is to shut us down. I understand that there needs to be rules and regulations, guidelines yes, but the new guidelines are

  • Great job on the video!

  • you said that workers make $ 10 per hr but you are not telling us ,how many hours a week they are employed ?

  • @fenwayism Does it really matter to you how many hours a week these people work? Again it all depends. And ranches don't only provide work for the actual workers on their farm but help support many many other jobs as well. If you were to sit down and think about every single business that a mink farm supports you would probably be surprised. I have worked in the minks for the past 10 years and love my job! And please don't get me wrong I do agree that we shouldn't be polluting our waters but

  • @fenwayism not all ranches have run off into lakes and rivers. Some have made a bad name for ranches and it is easier to focus on the negative and to not show the positives. And things like this just give some people the wrong idea and then they don't want anything to do with mink farms. But in this area if it were not for mink farms there would be nothing.

  • most mink ranch workers make in excess of $10/hr. this represents a gross payroll of over 25 million dollars in this province. money that keeps your businesses and stores open. too bad that the only criteria for making this song was whether the words rhyme or not. i guess the facts didn't rhyme well enough.

  • if people would really hear the words of the song ,what he is saying ,water protection from pollution and the runoff from mink farms , so please clean up one mess before you make another .

  • no wonder Shelburne has nothing, you guys protest anything that has to do with producing jobs. And obviously you have not done your homework on the mink farm you are currently protesting. Negativity is ALIVE and well in Shelburne County.

  • do your homework 311 ,this protest has nothing to do with Shelburne, and what jobs ? 5 jobs at $ 4.00 per hr , the only people that get RICH are the farmers

  • $4.00 per hour? I doubt it. I know my job isn't going to make me rich, but it's a job.

  • pardon me for getting it wrong, but sounds like something that is also happening in Shelburne.

  • @fenwayism 5 jobs at $ 4.00 per hour, that's really funny. Depending on the size of the ranch you can have a lot more workers then 5. And you say the only people getting rich are the farmers. Who do think gets rich working at walmart? The cashiers? Don't think so. Who gets rich at pizza delight? The waitress coming to take your order? MMM nope dont think so again.

  • @grizz7788 And really most farmers are not getting RICH,as you put it. A lot of their money goes back into their business. And they may be making a comfortable living. And who doesn't want to do that. There are some yes that may be, but just because they have mink does not make them rich. And it does not mean they are polluting the waters. Please do not put them ALL in the same catagory.

  • i also find it interesting that only two pictures of mink in the entire video could possibly be taken in nova scotia. Every other mink pic was obviously from europe. And this video is supposed to be about N.S. mink farms? And on goes the tactics of misinformation and misrepresentations. i know it is hard to sway public opinion if you only use actual facts and hard evidence. And how many farms have you toured? (legally?) Maybe you could meet with us and give us some good recommendations. No?

  • do you see all the nice clean water , so blue and clear ,or is the water where you live that green and polluted stuff ?

  • i cant quite figure it out. the only lake you care to talk about is nowlan's lake; which has 0 impact on the carleton or tusket rivers. This lake has had algae blooms for 35 years, and maybe longer but i never personally seen it before that. How can you possibly blame lake fannings algae on mink farms when lakes and rivers upstream have no sign of it. It is very convenient to make statements and assumptions with no scientific basis or evidence. and no one yet has contacted the NSMBA. Why not?

  • where do i think the algae is coming from? i don't know for sure, because i have no scientific evidence to base it on. there is no doubt a few farms that could be contributing, but also; higher summer temperatures, lower water levels, significant deforestation in the watershed, inadequate septic systems, and who knows what other factors.

No takers to visit my farm? i guess that would mean having an open mind and actually learning some facts. and apparently no one is interested in that.

  • the canadian fur marketing association? there is no organization by that name. in order to gain credibility, you need to get all your facts straight, not just some of them.

  • great job John with all the comments telling us what a great job THEY are doing ,and how things will improve ,the message must be getting out ,hope they will GET it ??????????

  • Great job - as a long time visitor to Sloan's Lake I want to ensure that it is not only there but also clean, including the blood suckers between my toes for many, many years to come. My kids haven't had a real chance to enjoy it yet but sure they will want to someday as well.

  • Go job on video well done your message loud and clear!

  • #2- the new environmental farm plan system has seen high participation rates amongst mink ranches.Close to 90% to my knowledge. This is the first step to help farmers identify prblm areas on their farm and help rectify them. This has led to millions of dollars being invested in better manure handling, chemical storage and usage, feed kitchen waste mngemnt, among many other things. Ranchers have become aware of things they had no idea might have been a problem. This has been an imprnt 1st step.

  • Perhaps fenwayism would be kind enough to tell us their last name.Perhaps you should expand your knowledge and relationships with other Mullen's before lumping us all in with the Mullen you are thinking of. The NSMBA wants to assure that new farms are constructed with the most up to date technology and care for the environment. I would love to show any open minded person my farm, which has 0 environmental impact.New legislation, will ensure that new and old farms are brought up to modern standards

  • blahh blahh blahh all talk

  • #1- proposed legislation must and will address new operations, in regards to construction of suitable barns, and manure management restricting rainwater runoff from contacting manure.Even today, most new operations utilize manure gutter systems that collect all urine and manure, and storing it in tanks, to later be spread on fields for fertilizer or composted. Many older farms are installing these systems as well, along with nipple drinkers, to reduce water waste and manure contact. more to follow.

  • Mr Mullen, first of all i never had any intentions to see agricultural operations being banned from NS-its more the opposite: I actually buy my meat locally on a farm - because i know where it comes from, second i dare to call a fur farm a agricultural operation-its clearly industrial.

You told us here about the improvements u have and want to make, so give us an example what changed in the last 10years, or what will be changed in the future? What is your opinion where this algae is coming from?

  • So, since the environment is quite capable of filtering this stinky rainwater, and seems perfectly capable of handling it, do you intend to continue spreading the misinformation concerning this "pipe"? or are you interested in becoming more informed. it seems you don't care to learn of what we are trying to do to improve our methods, but will only be happy when all agriculture is banned from the province. perhaps we should all go on welfare.

  • you want to know why we prefer to keep a low profile? for example: two weeks ago a man in portland oregon sets himself on fire and attempts to run into a fur store to set it ablaze to protest the use of fur. luckily he kept pushing the door to enter, when he needed to pull. he died later of his burns. These are the kind of people we are dealing with. We take pride in our industry, and admit there is always room for improvement. Why not work with us? We are actually quite reasonable people!

  • the government is currently drafting a fur act to put into legislation this spring, to deal with all issues in the industry. we have been asking for this for 3 years. we thank you for helping us convince the government that this is important to do asap.

  • The DOE return every year to inspect, because someone keeps calling to report some kind of pipe spewing sewage onto the river. i wonder who. it is evident that some are not interested in a dialogue with the industry to try to fix whatever problems there might be. Only assumptions with no factual basis. what not help become part of the solution? to say you don't talk to the NSMBA because you cant find them on the internet? i thought you were a better investigator than that.

  • and when u say the DOE and environmental engineers where on the site, just one more question: How many minks where in the area those days and how many are there today? So the system might be good for a few hundred or maybe a few thousand minks.... But nowadays the number of minks has reached way more than a few thousand....

  • ...possible toward a massive natural marshland which acts a perfect water filtration system. water tests from this river come back immaculate, both upstream and downstream. Considerable investment and consultation was made to set up this system. unfortunately, you fail to tell the public about the details, and actually would prefer that they only hear the complete lie that you are telling. if what you say is true, then why isn't the pretty blue lake full of algae too?

  • @danmullen100

then please answer me a question: How many farms are on the "blue" lake, and how many are on the other one... i never said that the environment can't handle any pollution... but there is a point where it is too much for the environment to deal with...and when u tell me that this pipe was put in to divert rain water...since when does rainwater stinks so much?

  • You know what is a perfect filtration system? Save all your wastewater, put it in a holding tank and get it treated by an industrial sewage-plant!Oh, i see, its not economical for the farmers, it would be too expensive

  • @danmullen100 that what scares the life out of me the Mullens will be on Sloans lake

  • I'm so glad you bring up this pipe you love to talk about. YOU want people to believe that there is raw sewage spewing directly into the river. When actually this case is one of the best examples of manure management in the industry. The river you speak of runs directly into the pretty blue lake that you refer to. This particular rancher, many years ago, consulted with environmental engineers and the DOE, and upon their recommendations installed this to divert as much rain water runoff as...

  • Sorry for all the comments but we are limited but others are not, why?

You will have to read many of these messages from the bottom to the top, sorry for the inconvenience but I didn't set it up this way.

  • From the pictures I see, it is disgusting what the water looks like now, can't see a pebble or blood sucker for that matter now!

Keep fighting guys. The video is NOT a lie, it is the truth!

  • In the past the government has had to deal with pollution from farm animals and leeching into the water, WHAT about Minks! Why do these people have to do their farms not near water?

  • The lake has always been clear and clean and a pleasure to bring children up in. To have something like this happen to it is a disgrace.

  • I have spent many many years at Sloan's lake growing up and revisiting with my children, and many memories to boot.

  • I live not far from the proposed site of the mink farm near Carleton. Therefore, I attended some of the public meetings which were held to address this situation. I saw no mobs, heard no name-calling or libelous comments. I did witness many individuals stating their fears & politely asking questions. Ironically, I saw no mink farmers at the early meetings. They could have presented their side, but chose not to - until much later on. Why weren't they there from the start? We needed their input!

  • Why all these long messages, but when one tries to post one we are limited ?

  • I have no idea. I only posted the one message and had to stick to their exact word count ... which wasn't easy! I kept taking out words to condense it.

  • oh, and a last one, mr. mullen... u said this song is made up of lies? The pictures in the video shows clearly the green water (on one picture from out a plane u can see clearly how a whole lake (a lake, not a little pond!!!) beside a mink ranch is green but the other lake besides this one with no mink farm on is blue....) Or what is with the big pipe that comes out of a mink ranch full with stinking stuff that runs off into a stream? There are pictures of this pipe, so don't say its also a lie!

  • look at 1:35 the lake in front with a few mink farms on is green while the other lake in the back is blue (no mink farm on there?)

  • (please start reading at the 4th posting down. This thing only allows so many characters per posting.)

the only reason why NovaScotias Mink-Industry is growing, is because they banned mink-farming in other countries or changed the regulations there so much that it isn't economic anymore (look up the netherlands, the UK, Austria for example...) And u know what? Be glad that i didn't start here with all the animal-cruelty-facts...

  • Normally u should be proud of your businesses but it seems more the industry tries to fly under the radar and doesn't want any public attention... hmmh... i'm wondering why? If the mink business is such a good business, where are those "open-farm-days" for interested people like u have it sometimes on cattle-farms? (i agree, the minks are sensible, but u could do this in the winter when most of the minks are "gone")

  • 1.000.000 Minks a year... thats equal to the sewage from app. 60.000 people.... do you know what it needs to clean this amount of sewage properly? Obviously not... Well, i tried to get more Information about the NS Mink Breeders Association, but if u look them up on the Internet - surprise, surprise - there is not much Information.

    why?

  • ok Mr Mullen, obviously you are a mink-rancher or work on one... but pls tell us from where all the environmental problems with this Green-Blue-Algae" comes from? From all the "non-existing" Industry around, from the small cattle-farms (most of them shut down the last 10 yrs) with their 15 cows or from all the bad faulty septics (i'm sure there are not much and those camps who are old and grandfathered in with no septic are not much used nowadays...) We talking about the waste from more than

  • (please start reading at the 3rd posting down. This thing only allows so many characters per posting.)

A mob mentality is being formed on the lies and slander of a few zealots. If Joe Public is so concerned, i challenge him/her to contact the Nova Scotia Mink Breeders Association, and ask them the tough questions. Mr. Horton is obviously afraid to.

  • He has done neither up to this point. Obviously, he would rather listen to himself talk, and enjoy what little notoriety he attracts, than actually talk with those he accuses of being the problem. This video is full of misrepresentations and assumptions. Maybe if Mr. Horton bothered to talk with the industry, he might actually find out what the industry is doing to address the current and potential environmental issues. But, i guess ignorance is bliss.

  • Wow. an amazing piece of slander. it seems peculiar to me that if the mink farms are to blame for the world's algae problems, you would think Mr. Horton would take the time to talk to some ranchers, or maybe even the association that represents those ranchers.

  • Good lyrics... hope the message gets out there for all concerned...

And by the way I don't know who is singing this but it sure does sound like Dylan, Heck.. maybe it is.. ;-)

  • those lyrics are so true.... time that the people realize that we have TROUBLES here in our nice Tusket and Carleton rivers....
