  • owww no sir the 17-40 is the winner, this lens is for landscape and maybe some portrait. it's a great lense and when your out in the drizzle nothing to worry about , who needs image stabilization? if your getting this lens you know how to hold a camera

  • when u shoot landscape for those lenses you dont need f2.8 aperture..no problem about the IS as you are using tripod IMO

  • excuse me but why for 10mm extra is an "advantage"

for me image quality is first...

have u ever tried to use zoom ring of a 18-200mm sigma lens vs. 70-300mm canon...

its like driving a truck... or sport car ...

(I bought that "crap" sigma 18-200 cos of big zoom range.. I tought i can shoot birds, or far objects with it... etc...then after 3 week a had to change it:D for a same price 70-300 is/usm ...)

  • also in fullframe u always have to set bigger f number rather than the max wide open f number..because of the things that happends when the camera is fullframe. always.

usually f5.6 is good in superwide lens. even if the lens would have f1.0 still it would need to raise the f at least 2 stops for a decend picture.

  • ...tests...

1st. vignetting, chromatic aberration and sharpness, plus the flare handling.....in fullframe 17mm lens.. the ef17-40L is the best...its also smaller than sigma and sexier..and weather sealing..etc..etc...

  • tamron 17-50 is better than Sigma in image quality. I would never buy sigma lenses..they just dont give me the good IQ i demand in my pictures.

  • I have the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

  • This guy is a freak.. You can not compare a sigma to a canon l lens...and his crazy face drives me insane

  • what about focusing? The canon lens has USM, the sigma does not. You can correct/override focusing without flicking the switch on the canon lens but on the Sigma (If I am correct), you must switch between AF/MF. Also canon's USM, according to reviews / comparisons, is faster and more accurate than the Sigma's. Just another point to bring up

  • 1, if you guys own crop sensor and don't want any upgrade to full frame then the sigma is the right choice for you.

    2. if you own both, full frame and crop sensor then the canon will be the best to go with.

    3. if you really need the f2.8, and want it work on full frame and crop sensor then go for 24-70mm.

on your video you should tell any details of these so people who watching your video not confused with their limit of knowledge.

    thanks mate.

  • 17-40 is sharper, more durable, has better glass, less color fringing and almost no distortion.

  • 4 reason is a cheaper price.

  • Hello, I have a question....I am about to by the new camera Nikon D7000 and I was thinking to get it with the kit lens 18-105, and also to buy a Sigma 17-50mm....do you think it's a good idea.....or should I just take a Sigma, and then spend the money instead for the kit lens for some other lens....

    thanks

  • Hello i have question too :)I am going to buy d7000 and i cant choose a lens i am thinking about Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS or 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM .Os sound nice but 17-50 with f 2.8 next to 35mm 1.8 nikon or 50 1.8 is another story. Is 24-70mm better choice even without OS ???

  • but it doesnt look as bad ass as the canon L... haha :p

  • You didn't mention better build quality on Canon side -.-"

  • you really don't need Image Stabilization when your largest f/stop is f4.

  • These are two completely different lenses with completely different purposes. The Sigma is a standard zoom for crop sensor cameras, the Canon is an ultra wide angle zoom for full frame cameras. If you own a cropped sensor camera there is absolutely no reason to look at the Canon 17-40 unless you're planning to upgrade to a full frame body in the near future. If you own a full frame camera then the Sigma doesn't even work in it. The real comparison would be with Canon's 17-55mm F2.8 IS.

  • @agc1976 - True, but a lot of people shoot the Canon 17-40mm f4L on crop sensor bodies.

  • @ArtoftheImage True but they don't and cant shoot the S 17-50 on anything but APS-c bodies. agc1976 is 100% right. The better comparison for crop body users would be the ef-s 17-55 f/2.8, which is a direct competitor. Thanks for the vids though, appreciate you taking the time out to make them :)

  • @agc1976 why is there no reason to look at the canon 17-40mm i you have a cropped sensor ??

with the cropped sensor you are using the sweet spot on the lens ...

  • @IRondestvedt Because you're paying a huge premium for a lens with less zoom range and smaller aperture. I myself have a Nikon 16-35mm F4 VR (the equivalent of Canon's 17-40L) and use it on my D700 (full frame). I also have a D300s (crop) but have never mounted the 16-35 on it. If I ever need to use that range on that specific camera I will, but I won't be too happy of the F4 and focal length limitations.

  • 17-50 ISNT FULL FRAME!!!!

  • I prefer second hand main brand. They maintain their price more and quicker to resell if necessary. Of course picture quality is quarantee

  • @robertlam18 - Valid points, but always check a 2nd hand lens by taking a few photos. Canon lenses often have a lot of sample variation, so you want to make sure you get a good one.

  • what about the sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 hsm os. is it a good lens eventhough it's cheaper? thanks!

  • @abybryan - I haven't shot it myself, but everything I've read and heard is very positive. As always, buy from a reputable dealer who has a good return / exchange policy, and then you can check it out for yourself. :-)

  • @abybryan - i have the sigma 17-70 2.8-4 its a very good lens for its price. if you would like to see photos i shot with it. NT photography on facebook almost 90% if my photos were shot with that lens. but i m currently thinking about to get the sigma 17-50 ... for the constant 2.8 ... but would just love to find out it is still sharp at 2.8 wide open

  • Thanks Matt. Too bad, just when I was thinking, nice a good cheap lens for wide angle. Just bought a cropped frame for which I don't have anything wider than 28mm but I don't see the point in getting an EFS lens unless it's really good and or very inexpensive.

  • I have that sigma 17-50mm for my 600D and plan on getting another for my D7000. Great lens

  • What would the focus speed of the sigma on a Canon 5d MKII compared to the canon lens in your video please?

    Thanks, Brad.

  • @artlinkzowey - The Sigma is not a full frame lens Brad. You'd have to look at the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 for the Canon 5D MkII.

  • @ArtoftheImage I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8. Which is an excellent lens. Very pleased with the quality, it's my walkaround. Also Lightroom has the lens calibration for the lens which is very useful.

  • You forgot to mention the bokeh :( Nice arguments though.

  • Oh my, you really manage to convince me to get this Sigma 17-50mm as my next lens purchase.

I think it'll be perfect for my Sony DSLT as video lens. The in body stabilization helps shooting video. In camera stabilization heats the sensor quickly in video mode.

  • Oh boy, you canon guys are going to envy this one.

  • @jh3835 We, canon guys, are not brand addicts like "others" :D. At least I'm not...

  • @jh3835 Damn right. I'd go for the 17-40 ANYDAY of the week. The 17-40 has better build (full weather sealed), superb optics (would never consider Sigma), plus IS isn't really needed at the wider end, IMO of course.

  • Another reason is probably the better bokeh with the sigma :)

  • @DVaderlar i agree, i shoot nikon and my sigma has really smooth bokeh which i think is better then my other lenses
