I think the fight between Sasuke totally ruined Deidara's character. According to earlier episodes, he respects all forms of art AND his opponents. He acted like a complete idiot in the fight between Sasuke, which was probably just so they could twist the story for Sasuke to win. They should have done past stories for all the Akatsuki members. They were way more interesting than Sakura, TenTen, and Ino.
