why the RPM is variating so much?, mine e36 325i on cold start, only keep the RPM a little high (about 950rpm), see if isnt something in the injection...
Hi, i have 528i and have same noise when starting cold engine. When engine is hot, there is no sound and all is working fine. The sound is heard only maybe half of a second after the starter is off and engine is runing itslef.
No man, that's not the Vanos whahah, what you are hearing is the starter...it rattles a few of a second on start-up. So you wanna loose this? Just change your starter with a good one.
Uh, what? That does not at all sound like a bad vanos. But, the best way to test, is when it is 32 degrees out or colder, start the car and let it idle for 3 minutes. If the idle starts jumping from 2500 to 500 rpm, then your vanos needs new seals. Look at my videos for a video I did on my repair.
I started my e39 in cold condition 32 degrees and i heard bad noise, but always a few minutes after that it works very nice and silent. When the weather is colder, the noise is worse, but just a few minutes. Is that ok?
@kadett1989 Watch you idler pulley, it could seize and break waterpump, steering pump etc... needs to be changed along with the belt asap. .... Well this was a year ago, tell me if I am right?

What year? 2000-2001 have VANOS issues. That noise is not something to not worry about.
