@humaner Well, you gotta have some idea what you're looking for. 'Unbiased' observations have been made throughout history and theoretical frameworks have developed to explain them. Now it's time to once again test these frameworks, always with the possibility that they break down at some point. They're certainly open to not finding the Higgs, which is just as worthwhile a money expenditure as finding it.

So basicly this video told us what was known back in the 1980s - there may be a higgs boson and if there isn't then it's something else. But who am I to expect actual new information from a news channel. Heh.

a hypothesis that works very well is nice to have. But direct observation is better, because the problem with a hypothesis is that it could be wrong. The new information we get about the higgs boson when we discover it is its mass and some of its other properties. And everything that is currently based on the hypothesis that the higgs boson exists will then be based on the fact that the higgs boson exists. If you care about truth, then thats significant.

If they had waited a little more and actually gave new facts instead of going on the rumor that they may announce a discovery I wouldn't have said a damn thing. It's them basicly saying "we heard that some smart guys will probably announce something so we should tell everyone before we know a damn thing" that annoys me.

Yes, about that you are right. It was a quick shot. But you also need to consider that this is a really big story. The definitive discovery of the higgs boson will be nearly as significant as the discovery of life elsewhere in the universe, or the development of the first artificial consciousness that is intelligent and self-aware. Its a story so big that no news outlet wants to risk of missing it. So, even if quick shots suck, expect more of them.

I thought Einstein figured this out years ago with his theory of curved spacetime. Matter curves spacetime. Mass is a certain amount of matter in a condensed space.

Einstein never adressed the question of what the physical structure behind this is, his theories work nicely and explain a lot of observed results that Newton could not explain, Einstein described some effects perfectly, but without explaining the quantum-mechanical cause of these effects.
