@Panarail Oh right. all you get at Dover Priory these days is London Victoria, London Charing Cross or St Pancres International Trains other than ones running though to Ramsgate.
man this brings back memories of the motorail service to stirling when i was a lad in the late 70s and early 80 , we would cross the channel on a british rail ferry to boulogne maratime and wait for the auto- couchette to take us to st rasphael . what has happened to this great world we used to live in eh?
@kratos32godofwar There is nothing there but a empty yard with not tracks or anything, its a car park infront of the station building and a criuse terminal is housed in the station.
Brilliant but quite humbling!i live in dover and remember going down the western docks station with my grandad to watch the trains, its awful that its all gone. But im glad i saw it again, i didnt think there was any of that sort of footage around!thanks for bringing back the memories, shame i cant go down there now and have another look!
It's gut wrenching to watch, but what an excellent video. I was born and raised in Dover and my father was a driver at Dover town yard from the 70s right up till it got ripped up, this was supposed to be what I was going to do when I grew up! Watching it get ripped up was heart breaking!
But have you got any else of this end of Kent? It doesn't get much decent video coverage like this!
@oliverturner88 quote "...my father was a driver at Dover town yard...this was supposed to be what I was going to do when I grew up! ".
Hi, how does this work - your father has a job that is a reasonably paid and a bit of a "nice number", so somehow he gets you a job where he works. Forgive my ignorance - but don't you have to apply and take your chances with all the other applicants.
I've heard of this type of system before - is this what they call a "closed shop" ?
Brilliant film footage.i spent many many hours there watching the locos shunting away.just wished i had taken more pics, its all gone now.Progress i think its called oh yeah sure more like dame right murder.thanks again for posting anymore of the same ??
I used to be a signalman in that area years ago and it is very sad indeed to see what has happened. The main station area is still there but is a cruise liner terminal now and all the sidings are just car parks.
I must admit that I know very little about trains, but as a Dover resident it was fascinating to see this archive film. I had almost forgotten just how busy the freight yards were, and it was interesting to see how things have changed.
Was Dover Western Docks an actual station, or was it just a freight area? It has me puzzling as the Network SouthEast logo is on the namesign at the start of the video. A good video nevertheless, 5*
The NSE station nameboard was taken at the passenger station but for some reason, I did not photograph the station on that day. I guess I got carried away with the slim jims in the yard. I'll post some footage of the station later that was taken on another day.
Dover Western Docks station was originally called Dover Marine. It became Western Docks sometime in the 1980's. The station closed to passenger use in the early 1990's.
I just looked at the area on Google maps and I was horrified. Everything has gone !!!! No station buildings... NOTHING !!! Look for Lord Walden Square in Dover on Google Maps. I am actually sorry I looked.
great video thanks for sharing thumbs up

Just wondering why theres Intercity Stock at Dover Marine/Western Docks Station? I know they used to use a Swallow livery diesel for VSOE trains.
goldie103103 3 months ago
@goldie103103 If I recall correctly, the stock in question was a Manchester Piccadilly working.

In a recent Wallander episode - 2010, I spotted locos loading rail freight onto a Denmark/Sweden ferry.
Still works for some...

The driver changing ends retired 2 weeks ago. His name was Ken Ross and a proper character. Another great loss to us.

I have another clip on here of Dover Priory to Dover Western Docks as seen from an EMU. Apart from that, I don't think I have very much more.
