@wartowne I'd sat Mooney is like the "Ferrari" of the aircraft industry. Few sales but high performance. For example, a T206H has a $574k base price. Whats the Acclaim Type S? 599k. The Cessna has half the range, is 62 or so ktas slower, for 2 more passengers. If I had 600k to blow, it'd be an acclaim for me.
Why does it take $100 to $500 million to "Certify" a new GA aircraft design, where the general aviation "Joe" wants to pay no more than $150,000.00 per copy? How many copies would a new aircraft company need to sell, just to cover the certification costs, not to mention the tooling, ramp-up, marketing, legal and routine operational costs of running the enterprise!
The FAA has made bringing new and AFFORDABLE aircraft designs to market, a Cost Prohibitive non-starter for all. I'm sick of it!
If you want to see new aircraft designs and improved aircraft designs come to market at "reasonable prices" such that the average "Joe" can participate in the community, then start writing your Congressional Representative (RIGHT NOW!) to get the FAA's Part 23 Type Certification process modernized, reduced, streamlined, sensible, realistic and cost effective for current and NEW aircraft manufacturers.
The FAA is killing GA in America, make no doubt about it.
People here are stating the matter correctly. Its not the Aircraft Manufacturers that are hurting GA sales. It is the massive cost involved in Part 23 Type Certification and that is purely a problem created by the Government. Overhaul of Part 23, will see new aircraft designs come to market. The Javelin Jet, is a great example of another good idea getting smashed on the rocks of FAA Part 23.
We could be flying the Javelin Jet today, if it were not for the draconian requirements of Part 23.
I prefer a Piper Malibu Mirage, more beauty than this "thing"... the cockpit it's so ugly with the power control of cessnas... It's a high perfomance single engine, it can have a power/pitch/mixture controls like a twin...
I guess if you look at the sales of Cirrus, Diamond and Cessna, it's fair to say the Mooney has already joined the ranks of other extinct titans like Bellanca and Beechcraft. No matter what they improve or enhance, they are still outdated and out of time.
A single engine piston plane at a jet price. that's why General Aviation won't be around 20 years from now. They are doing their part to help the FAA and the airlines in phasing out flying for the average joe. Ever read the covers of the aviation rags.."XYZ Airplane from XYZ company..AFFORDABLE flying at only $500,000"...affordable for who? Warren Buffet?
@floatpool : Actually it's more the FAA and aviation insurance industry's fault that certified companies are touting 1960's airframe technology and charging insane prices. Sky high liability costs for companies and ridiculous regulation and red tape to certify even the most trivial of changes (no less whole new designs) are destroying the GEN-AV industry. The only way to get a truly modern plane at a decent price is to build a kit plane which is a royal PITA not to mention a huge time suck.
@floatpool Flying is a privilege and a reward. If you can't afford it, then maybe you need to do more so that you can earn the $ necessary to pursue it instead of whining about the cost.
And you cannot find a jet for anywhere near $700,000-$800,000. You would need at LEAST $3.5 million for a jet. A Mooney Acclaim costs less than 1/3rd that.
@bg11215 You are correct..I should talk to my parents about why I wasn't born rich instead of good looking. Of course your elitist attitude doesn't change the fact that in the 50's 60's an70's the average Joe could afford a Cessna or Piper. There's no way a middle class family can purchase a new C 172. So chew on your golden spoon and enjoy that you can, but aviation needs to include more demographics or it will disappear.
@floatpool new Cessna 172s which are what almost everyone starts flying with is like $300,000.. 180hp.. a Cirrus SR22 which is like 310hp is $530,000 new.. a MOONEY ACCLAIM TYPE S which goes way faster than ANY Single AND Twin Engine Piston Aircraft goes for about $580,000.. WHAT THE HELL ARE U TALKING ABOUT BITCH?!? u know how many people own an Airplane fool???? u buy a plane for 580,000 which can go as fast as a 2 million dollar twin prop.. what the fuck!! STFU
Mr. Copeland is not telling the whole truth when he talks about the Columbia 400. He says the 400 is an aircraft that "claims to be the fastest." The designers Columbia 400 (actually the Cessna 400 Corvalis TT) claim their aircraft to be the fastest FIXED-GEAR aircraft in the world, not the fastest overall.
lancair IV has an airspeed of over 365 MPH w/ a similar engine. i guess these guys have to come up with 80 MPH to come close. the lancair is not a production aircraft thou.
Publicidad, engañosa.. No tiene autonomía para lo que dicen no es verdad la velocidad.........Baja potencia. y mala calidad de mano de obra. YO lo prove, nos es diferente al viejo mooney.Solo cambia el talero
When they say 1,800 nm range, they mean at like 55% power, right? They couldn't possibly make that at full power, but they keep saying 242 kts, 25,000 ft, 1,800 mi making it seem like it could do all at the same time
everything about this video made me laugh.. the cirrus ad in a video highlighting mooney. the corny "your entrance to speed" label on the door. and best of all, the eclipse ad.
a very serious aircraft nonetheless. one that I hope to climb in at some point in my career.
280hp? twin turbo? why not put an IO-720 in that thing? its got 400hp. Even though it increases weight and probably decreases range, if you are buying a mooney you only care for the speed anyways :P.
I like that idea. However, the airframe can't fly with huge power like that because the tail design can't maintain stability, i.e., can't counter the torque effects of that much power. That's why they turbo-normalized the engine to 280hp instead of the up to 350hp the engine is rated at in other applications. They'd have to redesign the tail and they don't want to spend the big bucks to recertify the airframe to do it.
this is one fast airplane...but you better be on your toes when you fly it; it will test your ability! take off quick...fly hi and fast...land safely!
Whew! Mooney bravo!

@floatpool $500,000+ for this plane? Maybe that's why Lancair IV sales are so brisk...
The high cost of certified aircraft is why the homebuilt industry is thriving.

it´s the minimum speed that you can fly with a zero configuration (no flaps) but with the landing gear down, before the aircraft stall
