  • LOL - the album cover of Boston with tentacles... XD

  • First impression: Psh, this is just a Space Invaders clone. Probably sucks.

5 minutes in: This game looks more fun than Space Invaders.

  • box art is kickass

  • Alien Invaders was on the Emerson Arcadia 2001 system. There was also a hand held unit which is really awesome as well.

  • Looks like an alien invaduh.

  • On first glance I was ready to write this off as just another invaders clone, but when you start to think about it, the developers did some pretty interesting things here.

I mean, scoring you Vs the AI, Shields that become lives, an alien opponent that comes down and duels you face to face at the end to a battle... that's pretty wild.

Two thumbs up for taking some chances with the game design!

  • can you destroy the green circles?

  • WHY DOES EVERY GAME END IN A !!!

  • classics

  • last saturday I saw an intellivisionfor 4$ but it was in bad state

  • My theory is that the invaders are actually humans trying to force out way of life onto the cuddly, snuggly ,triangle-spaceship-using aliens.

  • i just got my o2 today should i get this game

  • @bababooey2700 if you want

  • Heh. 1st comment in 1 year!!!

  • the Magnavox Odyssey 2 logo looks like it says Odyssey Squared

  • it was my first cartridge!!!

and i played it a lot. Very nice!!!!

  • With the limited memory, it became clear that each game on the O2 would feature ONE unique graphic (in this case the weird snakeship). The rest of the graphics were made of built-in characters.

This was a terrific game - but disappointing to me because there was no score. You either beat the thing 10 times, or you did not. Most O2 games were like this before 1982, when games like 'Pick Axe Pete' and 'Freedom Fighters' encouraged high scores.

  • i love this O2 game. yes, the big eyeball Ming the Merciless, is a tough opponent. Averitt did a great job with this one. not easy, fun and a challenge beyond space invaders.

  • not to be an absolute total geek, but its called the "merciless monstroth"

  • you're right, dammit! Ming the Merciless was in Flash Gordon! what was i thinking?! thanks man.

  • Weird... why does the score have collision detection? :)

I like that you can run to get a new ship, though. That's kinda neat :)

  • because that's the way Odyssey2 rolls, baby. they did lots of whacked stuff like that. ever see the "fake-out" space ships in Freedom Fighters? or shot yourself AND the opponent in Showdown In 2100? or the misguided dots you can't eat in KC Munchkin? ridiculously fun system. just don't play Volleyball. so bad, you'll commit yourself into an asylum.

  • It's strange how every aspect of game systems are now pretty plain to us, but back then it was all up in the air and crazy with potential.

  • very true. they knew this was going to take off, but they only had so much technology, time, funding, etc. the programs can still impress me when i play them..with 2k of RAM! talk about limitations!

  • I think despite the errors in old games, there was something elegant about trying to cram functionality into such a small space. A lot of programming now is filled with bloat.

  • most definitely bloat. it looks good, but is it fun? i mean, when i zoom around my little triangle ship on Timelord, it's really fun! it's all in the programming. Ed Averitt was a guru. great graphics only go so far.

  • I "lmao"'d over 5 times at this video.

    :}

  • i loved my odyssey2..every now & then we get it out & play it all day. the kids love the old school.i can still kick ass on it. i got 34 on the golf game the last time we played it.....

  • I stopped at my ultra high score of 6 today versus the computers score of 4.

  • Sweet boxart indeed.

  • That's one cool boxart..

  • i had this console man it was a long time ago what do you think must be 20 years old

  • 31 years old.

  • 29 years i think

  • its actually a trapezoid

  • cool; those were the dazs :P

  • I am sooo happy today...my mom brought home ody2 games when she got home from work. Though, I don't have an Odyssey2 game sytem yet...but they're awesome because they are all boxed, all 6. One of them is this game =D. I love the ody2 logos too!

  • Dude, they should value thousands of dollars!

  • buying them is cheap but on ebay they will go for thousands of bucks

  • @cadefulp not really i saw these games going for 3$ in some odd store that has odd stuff like it had rock band drums, but just the drums and stuff for it and that's it, no game or guitar.

  • Heh, guess I should'a 'looked' 1st, here it is, your review ;) !!!!! Dang - I love this game, NO MATTER what anyone else thinks about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Maybe it was based in egypt and you are a moving pyramid, maybe?

  • The part where your guy runs back and forth is just hilarious.

  • hey mark, how do you make it so the game gets louder when you arent talking? does it automatically do it on your program, or do you use a sound editing program?

  • This game review just sold me on getting an Odyssey2. I never had one growing up, and I think there's some good stuff I'm missing by not having one. Thanks!

  • Definitely get 1!!! I still have mine w/30+ something games - trust me, you WON'T be disappointed :)

  • Interesting game. It did remind of Space Invaders at first, but it is quite different really.

  • lol marshmallows

  • COOL

  • Hey, I´ve played that one! Looks cooler when you´re, like 14 years old, but Odyssey games brings me good memories indeed.

  • The alien at the top of the screen looks like a beholder from Dungeons and Dragons.

I like how the always show the laser bolts and explosions in this game. They didn't have that kind of production quality on the original Battle Star Galactica series.

  • The pink, snake tentacle-wielding, Boston spaceship comes down to attack you. Lol, great review Mark, with just enough humor =P Keep 'em comin' with those O2s

  • I saw a Magnavox O2 the other day at that nearby overpriced game store I've referred to in the past, and it was easily 50 dollars or more, I don't remember off hand. How much did you acquire yours for, Mark?

  • $25 from ebay, but it was $15 to ship it, so $40 total. It also came with 3 games. -CGRHD

  • @InecomCompany i got mine for the same price and 2 remotes and 5 games good deal?

  • @InecomCompany To get them in the UK it's about £150 :(

  • 20th! Screw you synthem! 20th is now the goal!

  • clockwork orange references yeah!!!

  • Alien Invaders Plus Fried Chicken- great combo dude.

I'm slightly suprized you didn't mention the fact that you have the ability to intercept the Aliens shots with your own shots, nullifying their attack... at least I don't think you mentioned it. either way, great review, glad to see you are including the new MVO2 games in your review stash. thanks for posting Mark, you do great work!

  • Haha, the packaging is classic. I remember my Magnavox when I was a wee bugger. My favorite was the wester shooter-- Good times, good times.

  • lol..."left and right with your...triangle that shoots laser beams".

  • This scared the hell out of Jack Thompson as a kid. The end.

  • There should be a Clockwork Orange game!

  • I seriously agree. I just hope that GAME COMPANIES are LISTENING, hint HINT.

  • love this odessy 2 stuff!

  • they way of shooting past the shield into the path onf a gun or alien on this is teh same formula for shooting a helicopter of of the sky on gta 4 or rocketing a banshee down in halo 3

this was the concept for modern gaming right here

  • Gah, I want some milk plus. Someone needs to start a chain of milk bars in the U.S. so we can all hang with our droogies and beat people to death with canes. Who knows where I can purchase a cod piece?

  • boy the odessy 2 sure likesto copy other games but great job, you really do work hard

  • From the album cover of Boston.... NOW THAT"S FUNNY. I never thought of it that way.

  • box art is fucking amazing XD

  • Looks awsome!

  • Mark, you work so hard

  • Jeez, can nobody take a hint? Nobody cares if you have the first comment.

  • ure just mad cause u werent first XD
