Doesn't really say who won? Looks like the Wolseley could out accelerate the Morris, my Dad had a Wolseley 6 when I was about 5, i can still remember it (just), big rusty hole in the front, automatic, and the starter used to jam, but he had a white line painted on the flywheel, so a handy spanner turned it to the right position to start. My sister (who was 17 at the time) became very expert at unjamming the starter faster than my Dad!!
@sparkygl0s True, A Six would be nice, but the interior etc would be a be lacking due to the BL cuts etc. My 18/85 is an interesting one as it's a cross over from Mk. I to Mk. II, Mk. I interior and switches (But Mk. II door handles inside), Mk. II Engine (And assuming gear box, but still has rod changers).
Hi i notice the Wolseley has head rests on all four seats, was the an option or are they later add ons, my "L" reg Six has not got them :( can they be added later?
The interior of this Six was taken from a scrapped 18/85 by Wilf Hatch about 10 years ago. It also has walnut door cappings unlike a standard BL Six which is just a painted metal frame. Wilf had the headrests made up to match the upholstery
Most of it was filmed in Bristol one January Saturday afternoon in digital. The dream scene at Castle Coombe was filmed in 1995 on Hi8 analogue. Toying withe idea of a sequel but with a more sexy script
Ahh, the old "land crabs". 1100's on steroids. They might have had a serious race over the grass. I'd have picked the Wolseley every time for the smooth six up front.
My Dad has a Wolseley Six very similar to that one, more of a mustard colour and it had metal strips along the wings where we would put coachlines (which fell off when the rivets rotted). It also had chrome hubcabs with W on them, the ones on this Wol6 I've seen on an Austin 1800 before!!!
Lovely to see them in action. Used to get a lift in a Wolseley every day to work, seemed so posh with the wood and the West of England cloth roof lining
Before BL was formed British cars had a lot of good things going for them. Better building quality than French or Italian and more stylish and modern than the Germans, for a competing prize.
But after that it all went straight down the hill.
Even former top quality products like Jaguar and Rover didn't manage to escape the downward spiral.
Austin made some brave engineering efforts with the Allegro and the Princess, but also in vain.
i have a wolseley 18/85 and its a great car, i drive it every day and its never been touched since new over 230,000 km on the clock and its still going strong, i have 3 other 18/85's that we will be getting on the road also.
My 1st car was a brown Mk III Morris 1800 that I sprayed Damask red. I fitted twin SU's that I got from a scrap Mk II1800S. Had fabric braced Pirelli Cinturato tyres on it and it stuck to the road like glue. It never ever let go. Used to race a guy home from work who had a 1600 capri. He could (just) beat me on the straights but I could leave him for dead on a twisty road. I sold it to a guy and he still rallies it today with over 400 000 miles on the clock.
Too bad that so many of the pics at the end flash past so quickly, it seems that there were several cool factory and contemporary photos there. Have never seen a Wolseley (I live near Chicago), but am intrigued by the name and history of the brand. I've subscribed to Practical Classics on and off over the years, and it amazes me the type of cars that English enthusiasts have not only saved, but brought back to life! I think the Farina-bodied cars are about my fave Brit cars, though. Good video!
, Many years ago i had the pleasure of owning a Morris 1800 Mark 1. It was huge inside , it could take 5 people quit easy inside, and yes it was thirsty and when it rain, the passenger side inside used to be like lake Windermere !!. Never managed to cure that lick, and you needed to have Poopeye harms to park it, and yet i loved that car. For ever missed.
I learned to drive in a blue 1965 Austin 1800, it was my dad's. It was a great car I can remember having some really good drives in it. Once driving over Hard Knot Pass, in the Lakes, I had to pump the brakes all the way down to get them to work. My dad got another in 1971/2 again a really nice car but this one had softer suspension and I felt it bounced too much and had too much roll on corners.
A sério riotagus? Fogo! É um motor de 1800 cm3 e 80 cavalos o arranque é lento mas penso que é um motor resistente... O meu pai vendeu o dele porque gastava muita gasolina mas o motor sempre foi 5 estrelas.
Only the doors and windscreen made it to the Maxi - well conceived vehicle but as always with BL, poorly executed. Stokes referred to pre-production designs as a "Chicken Coup". Not one of Issigonis's best efforts - the engine needed a serious amount of reworking after it was released.
Ah the mighty landcrab!!! (I remember one snobbish purist disliking that title when I mentioned it around him!) - In Aussie, the landcrab was also available as a PICKUP...
Ultim8evil...the 1800/2200 shares the same sills, doors and most of the ancilleries...so your comments not the most relevant is it it!..besides...most here like the maxi i'm sure!
All the open ground shots were done around the Downs. The film also features Portland Square, Broadmead just before the builders moved in and ends in Queens Square

You should be neutral. Yours is a cross between these two. The Wolseley trim, but with the 4 cylinder engine.

I have driven both motors in the 70's. The six was a lovely car with nice extra touches and a lovely sound to the engine.
Both very spacious and comfortable.

The Landcrab - surely Britain's answer to the Citroen DS . Will it at long last get the recognition?

The Wolseley in the video was caught in an arson attack in August 2006 which burnt the roof and singed the plastic gutters. The car started after 15 seconds on the key but requires a total respray as the heat damaged the paint to the primer. Now that would make an interesting video if you had the guts to stay in a burning garage!

It would make a very interesting video indeed although the insurance company might ask how you knew the garage was about to be torched.
