They were both great! I've played this piece and I've noticed that most people slow it down a touch because they think it sounds better. I saw Emmanuel Pahud play this in concert and he played it around this tempo. And to be honest, this is by no means and easy piece so if you can play it up to tempo, more power to ya!
Beautiful... I love the brisk tempo of this performance...I have a recording of Rampal playing it quite a bit slower but I think this tempo works better. Beautiful rich timbre across all registers, lovely shifts in mood. Please post the other movements soon. One question -- my edition has slurs up to that top D yet you appeared to tongue it at the top, I have heard another live performer do the same, is it a limitation of the particular flute? It's a b***h of a note I know.
lol...i don't know if i intended to tounge or not. Sounds like I did. I am usually just happy if all the high D's come out. I like the Rampal/international edition the best.
To the pianist: Beautiful tone, such naturally musical phrasing. Exciting execution of the development section. I thought the tempo a little rushed in the Exposition, especially in the repeat, just an opinion. Keep up the good work. How about posing the whole sonata?
thanks! We try to keep the tempo up on purpose :) I think most flutists play it too slowly-it's moderato, not andante
I'll record the rest to video one of these days. It takes so much time to organize concerts...I have tons of audio recordings, but they are not very good for youtube.
Justin and Bryan played this movement beautifully. As for Pahud and Galway, from what I hear on the CDs, the Galway/Argerich version is almost as fast, the Pahud /Kovacevich is slower in the Exposition, which allows for a little more expressiveness, the tempo did pick up in the Development section. The Metronome indication on the scor(G. Schirmer ed.)is an 8th note = 80, a very slow tempo. Oh well, there is more than one way to do things.
Excellent performance on this video! You should come audition for the principal flute chair in the Detroit Symphony. A young player with a great sound would do that flute section a lot of good.
I love the character changes and tempo. Your high D's are great, not to mention the arrpegio leading up to them. I find the interval between the high F sharb and high B flat to be of great difficulty. You have done well sir. I cant wait to hear your interpretation of the Chant de Linos by Jolviet. If you can play that, you have mastered the flute respectivly speaking.
Again Justin, you sound fantastic. You play with sensitivity and it's so very moving, yet when it comes time to be powerful you do it with ease. Bravo!
Justin: Lovely playing from the first note. I expect nothing less from you! Your playing really has matured. Be sure to post this as a video response to my video REAL FLUTE so others can find this, too. I'll go check out your website now. Bye, Nina Perlove

I appreciate the comments about galway and what not, the temp is a little fast, though.

I like it a bit faster. The metronome marking is quarter=80, but it simply lacks energy at that speed. Just a couple of clicks can add SO much.

I watched Justin play this piece for both Pahud and Galway in a masterclass. His tempo is great and is common performance tempo among flutists.
