The name Peter in ancient Greek is "Petros" - the masculine form. It was a play on words that doesn't come across very well in English. The name Peter in ancient Greek is "Petros" - the masculine form. It was a play on words that doesn't come across very well in English. The "petra" being referred to here is Peters statement in Matt 16:18 - "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." Upon this, Christ would build His Church; not upon poor Peter. Protestant Christians went through the inquisition because of not going along with Idol worshipping catholics, who even have a different bible than protestants. I'm a recovering catholic. I just never got in to all the rituals , having to go to a man to be forgiven of my sins and the fact that they state that baptism washes away sin. After leaving the church, I prayed to the God of Abramham and asked Christ to come in to my life, forgive me of my sins and guide me. I did feel the Holy Spirit of God come in to my life as have others.
bottom line: There is a God and he loves you. Salvation is a free gift. All you have to do is ask for it.
