EPA actually is more of a research agency than one that regulates those thresholds, it is still the politicians that gets to decide what threshold they want to use. I am a student contractor for the EPA and what we try to do is to create sets of models that tries to predict the outcome of a certain action, but the models also needs to take into consideration of uncertainty and unknown variables. It's a really hard problem and can be really stressful knowing that what we do will effect ppl life

Petroleum comes from living things too. It comes from living things that died a long time ago, so it is outside of the current carbon cycle, but in its origin and CHEMICALLY it is just another biofuel storing solar energy.

See, this is what happens; I wrote a PRO oil post and added the disclaimer to make it clear I'm not some right wing pro oil wingnut, so the disclaimer gets singled out to imply that I'm some sort of left wing anti oil wingnut.
My choices are personal and derive from my own thought and temperament. They are not a political agenda that I expect forced on others and have written other posts here pointing out the illusion of "oil free" bikes, etc.
I am not simple minded on the issue.

The problem is that US nuclear power is second only to the Russian design in total stupidity. Way over engineered, totally unique and costly. France is *laughing* their collective butts of at the US because they get 80% of their power from nukes and they have no problems (well, compared to the US model). Why? *STANDARDIZATION* All of their plants are built to national standards and parts are not only available from many manufacturers, but operators from any plant can work in any other!

Hate to say it, but nuclear power is WAY cleaner than coal plants. And if you have ever lived close to a coal power plant, it's easy to see the endless trains of coal being brought in every day. Wind, water, sun,thermal energy all sound great- but they really aren't cost practical at all compared to nuclear power. Besides Chernoble, what's the problem?

Greenhouse gases trap heat. More greenhouse gases = warmer temperatures. It's been proven so long scientifically now, it's almost fundamental. Science works in the realm of research and fact; Working up a hypothesis and testing it. What science doesn't do is spew conspiracy theories based in skepticism and zealous ignorance. Just because Al Gore is the only reputable person YOU KNOW speaking of global climate change due to greenhouse gases, doesn't mean it isn't backed by science.

Greenhouse gases doesn't directly imply CO2. Number one - this isn't a war against CO2. It's a war of proportions. Are you denying acid rain? Are you denying smog? Please, wake up.

2 centuries of pollutants being dumped into the atmosphere has undeniable consequences. Unless you are one of the belief that a smoker can go his whole life smoking a pack a day and never have any effect on his heart, lungs, mouth or throat. It's not about 'good' gases and 'bad' gases. It's about how disproportional supply of one gas over another gas has profound effects on planetary temperatures and climate. It's happened on Earth before. It has happened on planets like Venus.

Any gas can eventually become threating in an overwhelming amount. If for some reason our planet became bombarded with Oxygen in disproportionate amounts eventually it would be bad for us past a certain threshold. In science there is no fundamentally 'good' or 'bad' element. You can drown in H20, which is also a fundamentally life-beneficial chemical. What exactly was your point? Science uses science. Scientists can't just rely on the statement "Well because I'm a scientist, that's my evidence."
