  • I can't stop listening to this piece. If you look up for Solage on Wikipedia, it says that Solage was satirizing the "Society of Smokers", eventhough some scholars disagree. Who knows what was his real intention when he composed that piece. Anyway, thanks for posting! :-)

  • who is singing, please?

  • @MadMusicologist1

    Ensemble Alla Francesca

Performers: Emmanuel Bonnardot (voice, vielle, vihuela d'arco, cittern), Raphaël Boulay (voice), Pierre Hamon (recorders, bagpipes, pipe & tabor), Marco Horvat (voice, lute, citole, vielle), Florence Jacquemart (recorders, bagpipes), Dominique Jullien (recorders), Brigitte Lesne (voice, harp)

  • @theprof1958 : Thanks. A fine recording indeed.

  • This piece was written to satirize a group of hashish smokers called "the society of smokers" the name means "the smokey one smokes through smoke"

They end up saying "smoke smoke smoke" over and over, pretty funny if you know what it means.

  • Where's that picture from? It's crazy.

  • @jooelywooely

I don't remember, but if you search for medioeval miniatures in Google images you'll find many even weirder!

  • really excellent recording of this piece. Thanks!

  • weird but really cool

  • i think solage is the equivalent to the medieval period as what carl gesualdo was to the renaissance.

  • THIS is one of the most interesting medieval pieces

  • AFAIK

I have uploaded all Solage known production. I have a CD with other pieces attributed to Solage, but uncertainly

  • @theillfrisch: There are so many more in "Ars Subtilior", sone of them rhythmically as complex as contemporary music. But this one is very special in its harmonic structure.

  • I read about this piece on Wikipedia yesterday, and then it becomes really funny.

  • I love you, Lizard-Dog :D

  • Thank you so much for uploading this, Prof. Lovely to hear/learn more of Solage.

  • I´m glad you tube is going medieval! last year I was looking for Cordier and solage and I found nothing. Thanks for uploading

  • wow can you speak latin?
