  • 32 children. sounds like the description of a show on tlc.... the learning channel.....? well i guess from those shows you learn to never wear a condom so you can be on tv.

  • I always thought it was " My mom had been a rather crazy queen"

  • It's not 'My mom had been around the graves of queens.' it's 'my mom had been a rather crazy queen'

  • I just realized that the female version of Oedipus Rex would be Oedipus Regina.

  • Is she trying to tell us something?

    "im the kings 32nd SON"

  • Is there any way to get the track? It's not on iTunes

  • @videorock2020 You'd have to download the album from her website. It's available there.

  • we are reading antigone in my class. and of course this song came into my mind immediently.. but i listen to it now, and im trying to find the real connection between this and oedipus.. gah i guess im just bad at deciphering XD

  • @auderehmargo If I remember correctly, Antigone is Oedipus's daughter or something. She blames him for her being sent into a cave to dye in one of the acts.

Sorry if this is incorrect, I had to read the play last year ^.^

  • Oepidus is a greek mythological character from the play Antigone. Oepidus killed his father and then married his mother, they had 4 children and when he found out he married his mother she hung herself and Oepidus took his eyeballs out and had his daughter (antigone) lead him into exile.

  • @Joeluvrxoxo Oepidus is a mythological character who killed his father and married his mother. I had to look it up lol. I guess this is her take.

  • dont get me wrong i like regina spektor and most of her songs but does anyone else think that they sometimes make absolutely no sense?

  • @Joeluvrxoxo search ''oedipus'' on google

  • @RodriQoz no don't say that! you should read the play!

  • @Joeluvrxoxo thats the point of some one them, in my opinion. they are words that only make sense to her. songs like these are my favorite. :)

  • What font did you use?

  • From now on, I'm no longer going to bed at night, instead I'm going to start retiring to my chamber. It sounds so much more epic.

  • Can you not buy this on iTunes? :(

  • one morning i woke up and thought oedipus

i think you mean every morning when we wake up we listen to oedipus ;)

  • Love it<3

  • This is my favorite song ever.

  • And there's 39 others who dislike me. 39 others should .... go the hell away.

  • This song isn't exactly about the Oedipus complex like some people are saying... It's about the myth itself, about Oedipus... He was the king of Thebes after killing his father. And he married and had kids with his mother, so that's why regina talks about the king and the mother being kinda disgusted... And the people screaming is because Oedipus was punished by the people of Thebes... Anyway, read the myth, it's really good ^^

  • @InesFTWin I feel like its an extension of the myth because in the myth wasn't he an only child? I don't remember it too well, but it is a really good myth, totally agree. Also, in this song I feel that the boy is fully aware that he is attracted to his mother because he is unloved and needs someone to love him, but in the myth he gauged his eyes out when he found out, correct, because he didn't know who she was when they met? Correct me as much as necessary, haha, its been a while.

  • @kenyahp Yes, he is an only child... And yes, he didn't know that she was his mother, because he had kind of an adoptive family. But yes, the song is an extension of the myth, not the myth literally.. I just said that because I thought it kind of wrong to say that it was about the Oedipus complex... But thanks for reading anyway ahahah. And if you need any explanation about the myth, please, just ask =D

  • @InesFTWin Thats what I thought, haha. If it helps, I knew it was about the myth and that the complex stems from the myth. Mythology used to be the only thing I read. I loved it so much that when I have a daughter I am naming her Persephone, haha. Only problem is that I don't want her to be kidnapped to be queen of the underworld...hrm.

  • @kenyahp That itself is great already! Ahaha I love Mythology too, actually I am currently in college studying the ancient Greece and Rome! And its awesome! Ahahah Persephone is a really nice name, and oh well, if that happens at least you'll have your daughter half the year! AhahahI always thought Agamemnon was a nice name for a son... Although he doesn't have an happy life either...

  • @InesFTWin Thats so cool. I'm studying psychology. We both brought something to to the table for this great song, haha. And, honestly, there are very few truly happy myths. But I love how everything modern, story wise, pretty much comes from Greek and Roman myths. Reading them is like finding the key to what we read, hear, and see now.

  • @kenyahp Psychology is really nice too! Yeah exactly, it's great to speak to different people about a subject because they all have different opinions ans experiences... Yes, there are.. The Greek culture is all about tragedy xD And that is soooo true!! I find myself reading and watching movies and thinking about all the things that are influenced by those cultures... actually I found this song because I'm doing a paper about the influence of the Oedipus myth in european cinema... xD

  • @InesFTWin It annoys my friends when we watch a movie and Im pointing out where it connects to myths. It annoys them so bad. A paper about the influence of the Oedipus myth in european cinema? My word, that sounds really difficult. at least it brought you to a fantastic song, right?!

  • @kenyahp Ahahah It happens exactly the same thing with me xD But not only with movies, I also point mythological things in, for example, portuguese expressions (we have lots os expressions based on myths) and other things... Well, when I chose the theme I didn't know it would be so hard, but now I see it is reallyyyyyy difficult :S Yeah exactly, I'm finding things really cool with this, so it's worth it ^^

  • @kenyahp You're almost right, but it's only a complex when the desire becomes continues past roughly the age of 12. Before that, it's normal for a son to want to replace his father to some degree, and for a girl to wish to replace her mother. A complex isn't normal behaviour, as this is, it's a psychological problem. You're right about the Oedipus complex and Elektra complex, and I'm pretty sure you're right about the terms being coined by Freud. I'm no psychologist, but I'm pretty sure of this.

  • @Corthrovin Well thats what modern psychologists will tell you. That its after the age of twelve. But, Freud himself coined the terms for children around the age of...I wanna say 5 is when children start to realize that they have "sex organs" but not understand what sex is. Just the parts themselves. You're totally right that a complex, nowadays, is typically for adults or people passed puberty. But I was saying from Freud's view because he was...well, he was Freud.

  • oedipus oedipus oedipus oedipus and rex rex rex we're so amazing, it touched my soul.. and im a boy O.o i love regina spektor :)

  • The Oedipus complex is when a young child expresses desire or possessiveness over their opposite sex parent and desires to replace their same sex parent.

    kinda creepy.

  • @VelvetScandel No, its only when the son has that for the mother. The opposite, that being a girl for her father, is called the Electra complex. Don't quote me on this part, but I believe they were coined by Freud. He theorized that all kids had one of these, depending on their gender. Thats why we have mama's boys and daddy's girls. Freud thought it was cause we, as children, wanted to have sex with our opposite gendered parents.

  • @kenyahp Oh. I didnt know that. Thanks. But really, the whole thing about children obssesing and desiring our parents is still insanely creepy. >.<

  • @VelvetScandel I would def agree. Thats where the term "penis envy" was first used. Freud did a lot of coke and had some mother problems of his own. Its a creepy concept.

  • @kenyahp (his reason was either because we saw societal standards that men and women go together and so we picked the opposite sex we loved the most and he warped that, or because we, as girls, were jealous that we didnt have penises and they, as men, wanted to be the men of the household and, he theorized, thought they could only do that by bagging mama. If I remember correctly.)

  • @VelvetScandel Also, that sounded ruder than it was meant to. Im super interested in psychology and this part was also really fascinating because Freud is just a screwball, haha. Just trying to pass some really creepy yet interesting knowledge!

  • why do i like this song so dern much??

  • Born out of wedlock, there are many Oedipus in today's time. Regina Spektor puts a lure in alluding one of the most controversial Greek tragedy in mythology.

  • Her songs are amazing.

  • There's thirty one other's just like me, there's thirty one other's I can be.- this lyric makes my mind and soul drop.

  • @Gracelovestodance It is! I think it's both. She's alluding to the Oedipus you're referring to.

  • the lines "sometimes i stand by the royal wall, the sky'd be so big it broke my soul" make my heart ache. they dig deep in my flesh and have implemented onto my heart. im getting that tattooed on my chest tomorrow.

  • @shadesod I know. Whenever I hear that, my heart gives a little jump. Makes you want to laugh hysterically and ball your eyes out at the same time.

  • Why do Regina Spektor's songs always make me feel like crying...

  • Comment removed

  • Sometimes I'd stand by the royal gate, people screamin' love and hate. And they'd scream, and they'd scream, and they'd scream and they'd scream. Long live the king, long live the queen!

  • this song is really depressing and the way she sings it makes me depressed eww

  • I'm no lyric analyst, but I believe this is about being angry about being "just a number," and then hurting people you love to achieve some sort of success to prove your worth, resulting in regret.

But I don't know, feel free to prove me wrong.

  • @GoGoMariaGo I thought this song was about Oedipus from a Greek legend.

  • 32's still a goddamn number<3

  • These lyrics haunt me "Sometimes I'd stand by the royal wall, The sky'd be so big that it broke my soul"

  • THIS SONG IS ABOUT SOMETHING WE'D ALL RATHER NOT TALK ABOUT. THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE?

  • @JOLLYJOEY101 I agree but the other 5 are just asswipes :)

  • it's not " born to him with the night still young" she says "born to him with my hair still on" also "my mom had been around the graves of queens?" dont think so, she says "my mom had been a rather crazy queen" It just makes more sense

  • Comment removed

  • this would be really cool if it was chillstep remixed! it's perfect for it!

  • What does this song mean?

  • @OwlsnTurtles This song's an allusion to the greek tragedy of Oedipus, who grew up without knowing his parents - later he unknowingly had children with his mother and killed his father. That's why it says "and to see me made her awful" etc. Regina's also talking about meaning more than a number (32) or whatever your label is.

  • 36 dislikes is a goddamned number, 36 never count

  • why I'm in love with this song??? :) 'cause it's awesome like Regina's other creations.

  • hopefully this will help me pass the oedipus test on friday...

    :D I LOVE YOU REGINA

  • Those 3 extra dislikes should be ashamed. It was perfect before.

  • @daisies234 You have 32 likes ._.

  • @daisies234 I would totally like this comment, I don't want to ruin it though.

  • We read the play Oedipus in my English class last year but I don't understand the significance of the number 32. Help anyone?

  • @daisies234 The song isn't directly related to Oedipus; 32 has very little to do with the actual play. The song contains many allusions to the play's plot elements. The theme of the play is echoed in the song but not mirrored.

  • @TheMuffinChef So what is the significance of the number 32? Is it something special to the artist?

  • @daisies234 There is no special signifigance to the number 32 to this specific song or artist. Other than to make the line "thirty seconds" and "thirty second" be related.

  • born to him with 2 eyebrows on and thats all i was wearing<3

  • check out my History of Theatre videos at Professor NotOne! video 2 talks about Oedipus!

  • Wow, these lyrics are ripe for trolling. e.g I'm the 32nd son with hormonal imbalance hence the high pitch voice...etc etc.

  • someopne please explain this to me

  • @eduardoelmariguano it's based off the play oedipus

  • @HeartShapeGlasses007 THANK YOU :)

  • It seems like the song is about the 32nd son of a king, who feels rejected, and decides to murder his parents. Oedipus ended up killing the king, I think, so it connects.

  • @HoverponiesForever He also found out that the chick he was banging was his own mother, making his sons and daughters his siblings, later gouging out his eyes to "hide" from the horrors.

  • @HoverponiesForever He didn't mean to murder his father. He didn't it was his father.

  • @ShiningMoon88 *know

  • itd be nice for people who dislike this song to comment on why they disliked this so we all can see what the hell is wrong with them.

  • i dont think this song has anything to do with the play

  • The line: "My mom had been around the graves of queens" should say: "My mom had been a rather crazy queen." I noticed because I was listening to it without looking at the lyrics. And I also looked it up on azlyrics.com just to be sure.

  • @Brooke13Silver Correction, he had four children: two daughters and two sons. The wife/mother hangs herself, and Oedipus gouges his eyes out in repentance for his sins and yells at a bunch of people before being semi-forcefully expelled from the palace by his brother-in-law.

  • As I remember it, at the end of Oedipus, he finds out that the king he killed was his birth father, and he finds out that the queen he married and had 3 daughters with was his birth mother. And when his mother/wife, the queen, finds out that he is her son, she gouges her eyes out. So, in the end, he ended up fulfilling the prophecy, despite his parents' trying to prevent it from coming true. That is about all I remember from learning about Oedipus in school.

  • Please go to read Oedipus Rex befor write here.... Oh, God!!

  • Oedipus Rex is the name of the play. It doesn't make much sense according to the actual play itself, but I don't think the song is meant to be interpreted literally.

  • Didn't Oedipus Rex have sex with his mother, or something along those lines? I remember our teacher back in seventh grade mentioning that he was an odd man...

  • @PeachesRulestheWorld He killed his father and married his mother

  • @coolmovie88 Ah. Okay. Thank you. My mind doesn't go all the way back to seventh grade, lol.

  • @PeachesRulestheWorld He didn't actually know they were his parents because they sent him away as a baby.

  • @Anyality I also read somewhere that they weren't his real parents, or at least his mother wasn't... Is that correct? I'm not sure.

  • @PeachesRulestheWorld Mmm... I'm sketchy on the details. I've only read the sequel to Oedipus (Antigone). But as I understood it when others explained it to me, there was a prophesy that said he would kill his father and marry his mother so as soon as he was born (?) they sent him off to live in a neighbouring kingdom and basically be adopted. So when he met his father in the road years later and killed him he had no idea who it was and took over his kingdom and married the queen.

  • When I first heard this song, I thought it was kind of weird. I guess I still think it is, but it’s grown on me. It’s one of those songs that I hear and think, “This song is too different for me to like it...but somehow I’ll end up liking it.” And here I am, attacking the replay button.

  • who would hate this?

  • 32 dislikes are from the sons. the 33rd is the queen.

  • long live regina spektor!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've read about Oedipus and I don't get how he's the 32nd son if the king and queen were childless until he was born... and what's the thing with Rex?

  • @StarryNight316Jesus Poetic liscence. This song probably isn't ONLY about Oedipus.

  • @StarryNight316Jesus I'm assuming she took creative license with the 32nd son thing. That was more a focus on the fact that he's just like everyone else and can't get his mother's love. As for the the Rex thing, Rex means king in Greek, so maybe Oedipus realized in all his thinking that he could be king, and not his father.

  • @StarryNight316Jesus "Rex" is king in Latin, so his title would have been "Oedipus Rex," which is also the title of the play, for that reason. That's my understanding.

  • Comment removed

  • Is Oedipus the one who killed his father and married his mother, or is he the father of that guy?

  • @NerdyHomosapian, yeah he killed his father and married his mom.

  • and I thought Oedipus, Oedipus, Oedipus, Oedipus. That's a catchy-ass line.

  • My question is why the king didn't just kill his son after he had been born. Rather than give him to some maid to get rid of.

  • i've listened to this for a few years and alway thought it was " my mum had been a rather crazy queen" thanks for informing me! :)

  • @Sillilesshells It is "My mom had been a rather crazy queen", the lyrics are wrong in the video.

  • @JulsterIsCoolster ah, i see , :)

  • many of these lyrics are wrong...

  • or maybe its "born to him with my hair still long"? its sounds like that to me...

  • @wowEE109 That wouldn't make any sense though.

  • Who is Oedipus?

  • @TheDalina01 He had the hots for his mom. Look it up :P

  • lolz I'm writing a research paper on Oedipus and I was reading it then I remembered she had a song about it then I couldn't get it outta my head. xD

  • and to see me made her awful.

  • I love the say she sings the "Long Live the King" chorus.

You can really hear the disdain and irony in her voice as she repeats the words. Its pretty amazing, and utterly impossible to listen to just once.

  • I believe that 0:35 is "My mom had been a rather crazy queen" instead of "My mom has been around the graves of queens" But the video still rocks, I listen to it almost every day, cheers!

  • I think its Eyes still on, not Eyebrows still on. wtv. I love this song!!!!!!!!! Regina, you have done it agian :)

  • This song is hauntingly beautiful. I usually don't like 'weird' songs like this...

  • @zackfair73195 It's not weird, It's a Reginasong =)

  • makes me feel good about my self lol except i hate the king of england he can go fuck him self

  • Comment removed

  • @Mosher1911 what king of england it's a queen :p

  • Im not going to join in this fight, all I will say is Regina.. Your voice is beautiful and underapreaciated. It's sad that your songs get put down like they do, but just know that you have loyal followers who love your music and the feelings that you create in us. I will forever love your music Regina.. thank you for being a real artist.

  • She sounds like a very well read person, I bet she would be so fun to talk to .

  • For the first time in - ever - I can't wait until the dislikes reach from 26 to 32. It's somehow make me think that Regina purposely did that with her mind. Muahahaha. Long live the Queen.

    Haha, I'm weird.

  • @deetardeded 32 dislikes lmao

  • 26 people made me awful sad.

  • I hope that one day that Rainbowkeewee meets one of those " dick-eating motherfucking faggot who has aids" as he describes, and that they kick the shit out of him/her.

  • I love the song, but to be honest I just loooooveeee most of all when she goes tun tun ta ta tun at the start XD

  • @RainbowKeewee Im So Sorry, So Sorry About The Facts That Even Retards Have Enogh Intelligence To Make A U Tube Account And Post Dumbass Shit Like This.... What A Terrible World....

  • @RainbowKeewee i totally agree comrade

  • ...waiiiiiit, why can't she sing a song from a boy's point of view?

  • Why the hell is Lady Gaga more popular than Regina Spektor? Seriously!

  • @KallaJane its from Songs, her second albun.

  • What album is this from?

  • Comment removed

  • shut up V

  • Sorry, I haven't read the story but with Oedipus, he had some type of weird fate because he was the 32nd born, and he didn't get to know his royal parents, right? (bad synopsis, I know) but is that how it went and how it relates to this song?

  • @TheGirlinAmask98 No, not at all. He was the only son and then the king got a prophecy saying his son would over throw him and so he made his servant get rid of him. But the servant couldnt kill him. Years later Oedipus is traveling back to his birthplace (He didnt know it though) and he meets a sranger on a road and they start to fight and he kills the stranger.

  • @Ms18girly He then continues to Phebes i think it was where he solves all their problems and they make him king cause their king was murdered on the roadside. So he marries the widowed queen and they have kids together only later to realize that the queen is his mom so she kills herself and her takes out his own eyes. This is just the first book in a trilogy written by Sophocles in ancient greece, they are plays.

  • I've watched this so mamy times and I never get tired of it(:

  • Regina Spektor always makes me curious with her songs.

  • @tiggerey12

Oedipus is a character in a play by Socrates, as well as some other works. He unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother, without knowing that they're his parents, and fulfills a prophesy that his parents tried to avoid by giving him away as an infant.

  • @doctordaffodil Sophocles, not Socrates.

  • Point?

  • what is oedipus???

  • @MenOnBirthControl You have no ReSpekt.

  • @audstarful i don't respect trash

  • @MenOnBirthControl Thank you. 648 of us are "FLAMING HOMOSEXUALS" as you say, and at this moment we are all eatting dicks. Happy now?

  • @AcapellaAnni yes quite

  • @AcapellaAnni Niiiiiice
