I'll thank a soldier for his service to the nation when they storm Washington New York and Hollywood with their tanks and helicopters and deal justice to our worst enemies.
@gratitudecampaigne-I would like to get more info on "The Sign". I know the universal sign language sign is different, and you had mentioned that it is available on the website...do you have a link I can go to to find out more?
I was so thrilled to find this! I have a 4-year-old son who I've been teaching to tell soldiers "Thank you for your service," but he is so shy and says it so quietly - this will be perfect!!!
I served 50 years ago in the peacetime Navy. I would have been embarrassed by all this attention. Back in the day, we hitchiked everywhere. People didn't say thank you, but they gave us rides, paid for our meals, gave us a smoke. I used to hitchike my way up Rte 17 in upstate New York, Rte 14 and 15 in Pennsylvania, I never paid for a meal in one of those diners. Not one. It's me who has to say thank you.
I love the idea, but I'm kinda confused about the sign...... maybe it's some other sign/signal I don't know about, but the American Sign Language hand sign for "thank you" begins with the fingertips to the chin (not chest) and moves forward and down...... a very similar action, but also very different. I'd hope someone wouldn't form a "campaign" around an errant sign.... because then no one will understand what you are saying and they will never receive their due thanks... :hmmmm:
@fudgebarjohn Celebrating your freedom of speech, I see. You might thank a service member or Veteran for defending that right for you... since 1861...
Perhaps there is another country you would enjoy living for the rest of your life since this great country has such a large "terrorist cell". Maybe you do not feel safe here...I'm sure there is a place overseas that would love to have someone such as yourself.
Quite possibly true, but this video is not the place for this comment. You know all the ramifications that are involved in being a soldier, and if you don't, you should learn. They don't choose the wars in which they serve. They are under paid volunteers.
Thankfully, to Bush 2, for signing the agreement, and Obama, for carrying out that agreement, they are coming home from Iraq, finally.
From an ex-serviceman from the Australian ADF I thank every single serviceman current past and especially those who have sacrificed it all for us. I know what its like to lose mates and see others lose mates including US soldiers I know its hard and this is another reason I am going back in. Whether its god or just the citizens of our nations we all thank you.
@cineastasolaris For more information on Yellow Ribbons and Red Shirts, please see the LEARN section of our web site (url is at the end of the video). If you have more questions, please feel free to email us directly and we'll be happy to offer any information that we can.
What a beautiful video. I had a tear in my eye as this video says it so simply, it's not hard to say thank you but it's taking the time to do it. We in australia may not have lost as many troops as you but we understand the sacrifices that these grown men and women are making. You can't enter the politics into this campaign. Every time a family loses a loved one the automatic response is we should bring them home. I will never ever tell someone who has lost a loved one that now your son/daughte
This is really cool, but will all service men and women know what the motion means? Usually when I see someone in uniform I just ignore my awkwardness and say thanks, but this is a great idea for people who otherwise wouldn't go up to someone and thank them.
Wow, that’s so sad. I mean it’s nice, but it’s so sad that these American men and women go out to fight a war that is not thiers, killing people just like the ones who are wishing thanking them. What an insane World we live in where this sort of inhumanity is possible.
@montaramama The literal translation of this sign is "thank you from the bottom of my heart". Since this particular sign is an older sign, and not recognized as part of modern American Sign Language, we are using it as specifically targeted toward those who serve. So the written version might be simply, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart"; or "For your service and sacrifice, thank you from the bottom of my heart."
@gratitudecampaign Great. Thanks for this. For me this is a wonderful acknowledgement of service AND a wonderful way to connect. For your service in communicating this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I have been thanking people in uniform, or wearing hats, shirts that lets me know they have served, for awhile now. About 4 years ago a man in uniform was on his cell phone so I could not tell him"Thank You" So I came home and printed busness cards and now hand them out. I have made 2 grown men cry, I got on hug and a lot of handshakes. I am truly thankful for the service and sacrifice these men and women make for our country. I don't like war but I am THANKFUL for our troops! God Bless them!
Great Video! I know how important it is to show support. I remember another time, and was spit at three times while walking across O'hare airport in uniform. Yes, I am Vietnam Era! I now cross the street to greet a fellow vet who wears his/her colors. I will always support our Brothers and Sisters of Service. It is the least I can do to honor our brave men and women. Thank you for posting this fantastic video my friends. Absolutely thumbed! A Proud US Navy Veteran!
I guess I don't understand why all the politics are interjected on this. Some people believe these soldiers are fighting for them, for their way of life, doing what they can to insure no more planes are flown intentinally into buildings. Saying "thank you" when you think someone has done a service for you is never wrong. Its a courtesy that is missing in much of life right now. If you don't agree with what they're dong, don't get nasty because someone else does.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Propaganda at its finest. A enlightened human being will never thank another human being for hurting someone else in some crazy idea it protects you and your family. Please take your blinders off and look at the whole spectrum, of not only this, but all of your life. Do you realize how blind one must be to only see the 5 - 10% of the actual reality that goes with every choice, every situation? The military kills, plan and simple, go thank a person who can help people without using a gun.
@Guyjharrison I'm sorry you see it that way. Speaking of only seeing 5-10%, though, please share with us how it is that we currently have two aircraft carriers off the cost of Japan, each of which have 3 hospitals on board, generate 3,000 gallons of fresh drinking water from sea water daily, and carry wounded people to and from thier on-board hospitals with 6 military helicopters, if all the military does is kill people? Maybe we could ask Haiti? Or Louisiana? These are just suggestions...
@gratitudecampaign Guyjharrison...okay i may only be 14 but i know that our troops fight for our freedom. If it wasn't for them, you may not be here. Everyone has their own political and non-political views, but maybe you should appreciate what they do for us. That is their job and i am proud to call America my country and I always say thankyou to our soldiers for fighting for us.
@Guyjharrison You do realize that the people who have served in the United States military have granted you the opportunity to voice your opinion on this subject. Every day, Every night there is a uniformed soldier standing a post in a foreign land or here at home ensuring your freedom. I can tell by your words that you have never worn a uniform. Without politics involved, a thank you is in order for a person that risks their life for your safety and well being. Get a hobby, be respectful.
@Guyjharrison Is ignorance bliss? Do you have any idea what the men and women in uniform do for a living? They stand guard, they are vigilant and are always ready to respond to imminent danger. You may not like the "politics" involve, but that makes no difference in the matter. You may not respect the politician that sent them there, but you need to respect the individual who places their life in danger for your freedoms.
@Guyjharrison how bout you go over there and do you job with hundreds of them shooting at you. guns arnt used for flat out killing theyre for protection. with out the miltary that we have that "kills, plain and simple" you wouldnt be as FREE as you are to today. when you lay down to sleep tonight think of the Soldiers over there that cant sleep because they might get shot at as theyre protectin your way of freedom you asshole.
Thank people who help without using a gun... like people who provide mobile medical care to those who can't afford it all over the world? Like people who build shelters, hospitals, markets etc.. People who help clean up after a terrible natural disaster.. Yes, these are just a fraction of what soldiers do.
They also volunteer to join the military so that you don't have to. If it wasn't for people like them, we would being seeing round 2 of the draft.
@upwards11 That's a load of nonsense what you're saying. They aren''t fighting just so you can say what you like. They are fighting to look after corporate interests alone, even though most of them obviously don't realise it.
Am I wrong for feeling weird or wanting to feel left alone or not knowing how to react every time some stranger stops me at a gas station or a subway to thank me for my service?
@sakonhagakure Not at all. That's not at all uncommon. In fact, that's one of the reasons that we like this gesture so much. It's a way for people to say "thank you for your service" without stopping a service member or invading their pesonal space.
In terms of not knowing how to react, I would offer that you are not expected to do or say anything. A simple, "you're welcome" will typically send them on their way if you're not interested in a long conversation.
Again, your putting the attention on youself, so now I OWE YOU. Thanking troops is like this is like wearing a football jersey. Yeah you like the team and you want the team to win, but you just want everyone to see how big of a fan YOU are. "Look at me I'm a good person."
Good people do good things and expect nothing in return. Like making donations to a dissabled veterans charity and remaining Anonymous.
@sakonhagakure One last thing that I would offer is a reminder that a civlian's desire to thank you for your service is as much about them as it is about you. It's about being grateful for our freedom and security. So if you aren't comfortable accepting their gratitude personally, or if you'd rather just be left alone, then perhaps it might help to simply reframe it in your mind as, "Isn't it nice that you're so grateful for your freedom?" and let go of it being about you personally.
@sakonhagakure I'm in the Army and I go out of my way to avoid wearing my uniform in public. Because of crap like this.
You want to show gratitude? Do all the profits you get from your t-shirts go to dissabled vets? Are you doing something that puts the attention on the sacrifice on the soldiers and not YOU for trying to show "Thanks"
All these campaigns are a ruse, don't have a pepsi and give 50 cents to a veteran charity or keep waving your hands like an idoit with a red shirt on.
@gutterfish47 I'm very sorry to hear that you are so bitter and angry that you avoid wearing your uniform in public just to avoid people expressing their gratitude to you. That sounds like a very sad place to be. I hope that you find some peace -- even if that means just being left alone if that's what you prefer.
@gratitudecampaign I guess the best way to defend against being called out like that is to dodge the topic all together and just attack the other person's credibility. Hey I'm just sad bitter and angry, so I don't know what I'm talking about right?
Anyways, how about you and all your followers actully do something about the military's pay possibly being cut by contacting your congressmen, state senate, to end the budget debate. Or just keep waving your hands at me.
@gutterfish47 No, I wasn't dodging the topic. I was accepting that you have strong opinions that are not mine to resolve, and that I can't adequately address in 400 characters. If you're truly interested in getting answers to the issues you've raised, I would encourage you to visit the LEARN section of our web site. I have already addressed all of your concerns in detail on that page. I realize that this campaign may be new to you, but your opinions are not new to us...
It is a simple gesture. A universal sign of thanks in sign language. The campain is just a way to give those who feel akward a common way to show their support for our troops. We do not have to believe in war or the reasons we fight them. Its a way to unite people who believe that our Vietnam vets were horribly mistreated by the very people who should have supported them. A way for people to say sorry by saying thank you.
@keebstracy -- um, this actually isn't even the correct ASL sign for "thank you".... it's close, but no cigar.... if you were to sign this to a deaf person they'd have NO idea what you were trying to say. It's unfortunate, because if people followed the suggestion in this video, no one would get the thanks they deserve....... :/
As an Army wife, I make it a priority to thank our service members and vets alike. I honestly don't think how you show you gratitude is the big deal - the motion in the video, the ASL sign for thank you, a thumbs up, a warm smile, a handshake, a quick "thank you for your service"...the list goes on and on. What matters most is that you let them know.
Oh I am rambling paranoid? I defended the "republicans" right to outsource my job. Some how I don't think even the most money pinching person is going to "outsource" an active duty army job to some other country. But thank you for your concern. Also if you want to get on that subject why are companies, not just republicans, outsourcing jobs? It couldn't be the fact that current polcies make it so some would be out of bussiness if they tried to operate here or they are trying to turn a profit.
@JetMechMA Where are you getting your talking points from? I am in the military right now, been deploied 4 times, and am stationed at one of the bussiest forts in the USA and I haven't meet one of these soldiers that isn't a citizen of these United States wearing the uniform. Now we let our terps wear ACUs. But I am not so pompise to beleive that some corners haven't been cut in the army but I am sure that 99.99% of soldiers r citzens, but useing your logic I didn't see it so it didn't happen.
@mrrossn: current polcies make it so some would be out of bussiness if they tried to operate here
JM: Yes commrade, lets stand up and cheer for the commrade slaves in communist China. Making profit off of the backs of the miserable Chinese slaves and throwing American workers under the bus is the all-American thing to do. Some say that using communist slaves to make profit is hypocritical of a so called capitalist, but not you and me, eh commrade?
@JetMechMA Ahhh no, if your toe is infected and going to cause you to lose your whole leg what do you do? It's a little off point but it makes sence. If a business is loseing money and is going to go under what should you do, let everybody lose there jobs or fire some and send their jobs to be done cheaper by someone ealse. I am not saying it is right and I am saying that there should be some changes to the gov. policies that drive business to have to make these chosies.
@mrrossn: I am not saying it is right and I am saying that there should be some changes to the gov. policies that drive business to have to make these chosies.
JM: In order to compete with communist China, you're talking about lowering our standards to theirs. Are you actually saying that?
@JetMechMA wow again totaly off point you're really not listening are you. Lets see Commnism crushes itself under its own wheight , Soviet Union, North Korea, ect. I am not saying we "lower" our standerds I am saying the government needs to cut some of their restrictions that are handycaping american companies. Chian will fall under its own weight given time, just like the Soviet Union. We need just to outlast them, also we need to get the fuck out from under their colective thumb.
@mrrossn: I am not saying we "lower" our standerds I am saying the government needs to cut some of their restrictions that are handycaping american companies. Chian will fall under its own weight given time, just like the Soviet Union. We need just to outlast them
JM: We can't compete with them unless at their LOW standard of living. $8 dollars a day wages. We can't outlast them because REPUBLICANS FUND EXPLOSIVE GROWTH IN COMMUNIST CHINA WITH JOBS OUTSOURCED FROM AMERICA ! ! ! ! ! !!!!!!!
@mrrossn: I am not saying we "lower" our standerds I am saying the government needs to cut some of their restrictions that are handycaping american companies.
JM: Chinese worker makes.....fucking Chinese worker makes 78 cents per hour. YOU are advocating Americans make 78 cents per hour in order to compete...because that would be the ONLY way to compete. In a word, FUCK YOU!!!!!!
@JetMechMA wow, dude really lay off whatever drugs you've been taking. take the ones the docs gave you not the ones the guy on the coner did. You don't get that everytime you blame everything wrong with this country solely on the Rep. that you lose any credibility that you think you have. Have Rep. made mistakes in the past? Have Dems made just as many if not more? Do we have a huge hole to dig out of? Is it going to take some sacrifice? Does blaming everything on 1 party get us anywhere?
@JetMechMA Really dude every one? you know what I really don't care anymore. You should really look into getting some help. People like you are so self centered that you have no idea why everybody around you leaves you. Your like a thick smoke in a room, you suck out all the fun and leave just saddness, and the messed up thing is you have no idea that you do it. Go have your aurguments with a tree you might win. Oh and by & by I didn't "wet myself" I leave that up to you & yours.
@mrrossn: Chian will fall under its own weight given time, just like the Soviet Union. We need just to outlast them.
JM: So, what are we talkin here, another 40, 50 years or longer? Your plan is waiting them out eh? Lets do some quick math here.....you and I will be dead and buried. Your kids will be dead and buried. Their kids will be the unfortunate citizens of an impoverished America which was turned into a God forsaken place because of 100 years of outsourcing. Good plan though.
This is beautiful & worth sharing. When I read comments where people question the intent of this gesture & seek to replace it with thumbs up (different meaning entirely) & find its hidden meaning,I ask you this. Try it once, while sending sincere gratitude & see how you feel. Get out of your head & really think about how this uniformed service person would metaphorically jump in front of a train for you--& he/she probably has had fellow soldiers who have. Saying thank you should come with ease.
I never know what to say when people thank me for my service. I appreciate the thought, it's obviously better than being despised, but I've just always felt it my duty to serve. On behalf of me, to a grateful nation, it was my pleasure to serve and defend my country and fellow citizens. My thanks to my comrades in arms who continue to serve and to those troopers who gave their lives, we'll meet again at Fiddler's Green.
I am a Vietnam Vet and was not permitted to wear my uniform out of Travis AFB on my way to my home because of safety. I have other Vietnam friends (men and women)who have been spit at when arriving home. No right wing brainwashing involved. I have not talked to one Vietnam Vet who was welcomed. Penny
@marenisco1 It's just flat out wrong to paint the 70s the way you just did. I had friends and neighbors who were Vietnam Vets and they got respect from everyone as far as I ever saw....and I mean all over the Chicago area.....America's second city. From downtown to O'Hare airport nothing but respect was ever shown to the troops back then. It's a right-wing MYTH of epic proportions to say that the troops weren't respected during the Vietnam war. I lived through that era and I know better.
@JetMechMA You sound very bitter about something.....I lived through the Vietnam War era, rode the bus through Lincoln Park in Chicago to get to work during the Democratic Convention, the Yippies and armed National Guardsmen on every corner downtown. Yes - most of us appreciated our service people over there, but there was a dislike of the way the war was being handled, and it spilled over to the way our returning soldiers were treated. Continued...............
I saw pictures of soldiers being spat on, so don't tell me the troops were not disrespected when they came home.....maybe by a minority, but disrespected nevertheless. I make an effort to shake their hand when I see them, but sometimes the moment is fleeting and I give the heart sign instead. Thumbs up does not represent a 'thank you' to me.......offering my heart does.
JM: Yeah...ya think? This propaganda about returning vets being disrespected is a brainwashing tactic used by the republican party to stir up feelings of super-ultra-nationalism in the minds of weak minded voters, in order to get them to vote republican....the implication being that only republicans respect the troops. It's a lie.
@angiew43: the way our returning soldiers were treated.
JM: ??? How disrespectful is it when republican business owners outsource a soldier's job to communist China while he is away at war? You people have lost your minds. If you want to show a veteran real respect, don't outsource their God damned JOB ! ! ! ! !!!!!! Is that too much to ask? Apparently it is.
@marenisco1 My Father is a Marine Corps Vietnam Vet.....WELCOME HOME BROTHER AND THANK YOU FOR SERVING WHEN OTHERS DID NOT HAVE THE GUTS TOO. - from a 2nd Generation US Marine.
I love the idea of saying thank you to those who serve and sacrifice, and have been practicing this way of saying thank you ever since I first saw this video months ago. Recently I extended it to those who serve locally, fire fighters, police, emts, etc. They too are going in where all others are running out and willing to sacrifice all for the good of others. I have gotten nothing but smiles in response and it makes me feel good to acknowledge their willingness to serve us all.
Yes I did show respect for Vietnam soldiers that came back and friends of mine who didn't! THE majority of soldiers went into service right after graduation. They were my age
@47kiana The anecdotes of disrespect towards Nam vets are overblown....WAY out of proportion. The vast majority of Americans respected the servcie of our Vietnam vets. The tiny minority who disrespected them, don't matter.
I'm sorry, that's just too awkward. Here in America we give the thumbs up. That's the common man's hand signal conveying a positive message....thumbs up. If you want to convey a positive message to a soldier, give them a thumbs up. That's what we do in America. This other thing might be some sort of right-wing code or something, I don't know. I'm stickin with the thumbs up.
@JetMechMA I'm sorry that you feel that it's too awkward. Of course, if it doesn't resonnate with you, you are free not to participate.
Having said that, we chose this sign because it has a very specific meaning -- "thank you from the bottom of my heart." A thumbs up, on the other hand, can mean anything from "cool" to "good" to "I approve". One thing that it generally doesn't mean is "thank you".
As for what "we do in America"... well, that's a whole other discussion.
@gratitudecampaign: You're wrong about the thumbs up. This other thing is just too awkward. Go to other web sites and see what they're saying about it. It's just too strange. I think it's some sort of ill concieved right-wing code that's suposed to demonstrate that right wingers all do it and left wingers dishonor the troops when they don't do it. I got news for you, in America we honor our troops but we don't worship them. Got it?
1. I'm not "wrong" about the thumbs up. If you like it, by all means use it. But it does not mean "thank you" to most people.
2. I have been to other web sites and seen what they're saying, and there are literally thousands who are on board with it. I'm sorry that you're not.
3. When did a heartfelt "thank you" become so uncommon that it is now likened to "worship"? We're just saying "thank you" here... let's not try to make it more than that.
@gratitudecampaign 1. The thumbs up is the all-American thing to do. It always has been. This other thing is too awkward.
2. I disagree, I think most people think it's too unorthodox.
3. I don't think it's necessary to interact with soldiers in the airport other than common courtesy. "Hi guys, hows it going?" That sort of thing. You might say, "Thanks for your service" if you happen to engage them in conversation,. but any more is not necessary. It might actually embarrass them.
@JetMechMA Yeah, you would want to have to assosiate with us no would you you fuck elightist fuck. I can imagen you walking through the airport with your kid, your one of those fucks that says hi and pretends to be nice but the min we are out of ear shot you bad mouth us to your kid with things like, "you better study hard in school or that will be you." or "Oh those poor guys they just had to go to the army they had no where ealse to go" WE HATE PEOPLE LIKE U KEEP UR FALSE CONSERN U ASSHOLE.
@mrrossn: WE HATE PEOPLE LIKE U KEEP UR FALSE CONSERN U ASSHOLE.
JM: You have just literally displayed paranoid ramblings. You're a sick fuck. Everything I said was in defense of your fucking job when you get back to the States. On the other hand, all YOU'VE done is defend republicans right to outsource your fucking job. What kind of sick assHOLE are you?
@JetMechMA Bucause in the real world bussiness need to make money, if they don't they go bankrupt and then everybody that works there is out of a job. I also want to respond to something you said to another person, about the Vietnam area vets. Now I am paraphrasing here but what you said was that u never saw disrespect show to the soldiers coming home. So because one person in one city never saw an incident happen of course it must be an overblown lie. You know something with that logic.......
@mrrossn: Bucause in the real world bussiness need to make money, if they don't they go bankrupt and then everybody.. is out of a job.
JM: Well, you GOT your wish, you republicans busted all the fucking unions, but nobody is making money...because nobody has any wages to stimulate the economy with. Most jobs are anti-union. Less than 8%. You can't blame unions any more, you busted them down into the single digits as a percentage of unionized jobs. Who you gonna blame now???
@JetMechMA One word GM. Did you know that every HMV and Uparmered Vehicale that I road & drove in overseas had a GM engine in it? How did they go bankrupt? and wear are you getting that only 8% of jobs in the us are union, Teachers, all gov service workers, my brothers worked for the gas pipeline and you had to be in the union to work, my other brother works in a oil refinery, again you have to be in the union to work. police, fire fighters, service workers, you have me at a lose on the 8%.
@mrrossn: One word GM. Did you know that every HMV and Uparmered Vehicale that I road & drove in overseas had a GM engine in it? How did they go bankrupt?
JM: I hope you're sitting when you read this...it may come as a big surprise to you, but there are 300 million people in the United States. The military is a tiny fraction of that. You might try getting some perspective on the world.
@JetMechMA wow totaly just missing the point. At their hieght there was some 90,000 HMMWVs roleing around Iraq alone, and with replacment engians you are looking at 180,000 engians, my question isn't "How many people live in the US" oh and it is more like 350 million people. Or "How the military only makes up a small fraction of the population." no shit. with a standing force of about 1,400,000 I would never had known that if u hadn't "sat" me down & told me. I want to know why GM went bankrupt
JM: You have no reading comprehension or critcal thinking skills. It's HARD to have a conversation with you if you can't use your mind for simple tasks. We've established that republicans facilitated the outrsourcing of all the good union jobs. Guess what, now all those millions of people can't afford new cars. DUH ! ! ! !!!!!!! Get a clue man!!!!! No sales equals auto-bankruptcy. DAMN!!!! What's it take to get through to you?
JM: DUDE!!!!!.....it is YOU who is totally missing the point. The tiny amount of Humvees running around in the military isn't SQUAT compared to total GM production. THAT's what I was pointing out, but you were incapable of comprehending. The military isn't SHIT compared to the gargantuan size of the US population. It isn't JACK-SHIT!!!! The number of engines the military buys from GM isn't enough. It would take MILLIONS of vehicles.
@mrrossn: The percentage of jobs that are unionized has NEVER at any time been more than 37%, and that was back in the 1950's before you or I were born. The private sector....which is what we are talking about when you talk about outsourcing, is actually only about 7% unionized currently. Look it up dude....you've been LIED to by your republican brainwashing masters. Use your head, don't just take anyone's word for this stuff. Look it up your self. Inform yourself. Be observant....take notes.
@JetMechMA I thought that I had pointed out where there are unions in the "private sector". I guess me and you have a diffrent defenition of what that means. I get the feeling that you are looking at the private sector thru so crazy lens. Most construction workers are union, that incleds, welders, pipfiters, roofers, heavy equipment operators, ect. Also if republicans are liers, then from whom do you get your "truth" from? Democrates? or the people that indebted us to China? yeah, whatever.
@mrrossn: I guess me and you have a diffrent defenition of what that means.
JM: You are uneducable. The official statistics say that the percentage of private sector union jobs is 7%. That's all. You've been lied to by whoever feeds you your right-wing propaganda. Like I said, LOOK IT UP for yourself.....IF you're being honest about it. Don't you think I know that you can go look it up and call my bluff? Well, GO DO IT ! ! ! ! !
@mrrossn: I thought that I had pointed out where there are unions in the "private sector".
JM: You refuse to educate yourself, is that it? The percentage of jobs that are unionized is now around 7 or 8 percent. Like I said, you can't blame it on unions, so who you gonna blame now? The fact is, republicans have been outsourcing non-union jobs more than union jobs. They do this because they HATE American workers. republicans make their profit in communist China using communist slaves.
@JetMechMA I guess seeings how I have never seen a Million dollars it must just be a lie, no way could that amount of money just be out there laying around. You called me Paranoid but the only paranoid person on here is you. You clam that people loseing their jobs is a "Republican" conspiresy, also "Republicans" are guilting the citizens of this county into saying thanks to their "volunteer" army. That is more messed up then saying that the NWO and the Freemasons are having sex on a spaceship.
@mrrossn: I was talking about in the city of Chicago dude. Chicago O'hare airport, the busiest airport in the world, then and now. Nothing but respect for the troops. Sounds like you're the one who doesn't know what you're talking about...you're just going by republican brainwashing, that's all. I lived it, I know. You don't. You're just brainwashed.
@JetMechMA Ohhhh so you were everywear back in the day huh, you say every serviceman & woman get off their planes and get home with out getting hasseled. I am not brainwashed haveing put up with a buch of assholes. Code Pink coming home one time, and the WBBC at a funeral where me and my guys were the honor guard, I have seen people disrespected and have been disrespected, So no I am not brainwashed. Your previouse statments show that you are just dumb, go live some more the talk.

5. Please stop telling me what "we do in America". One thing we do, which you may have forgotten, is respect each others differences. I respect that you don't like our sign. I'd appreciate it if you would respect that millions of others do, and let it go.
@JetMechMA Wow, that is about all I can say. Now all of a sudden a "thank you" to the troops is a "right-wing" "code". As a former Soldier I can't say that the whole hand thing is cool, I myself unless I knew what it ment would think that those people were deaf or something. But be that as it may it is a group of people who aren't worried about being all up thier own asses and saying thank you to the soldiers, not the gov, the everyday soldier. So have a nice day and go fuck yourself
@mrrossn: So have a nice day and go fuck yourself
JM: You are a republican TRAITOR to America. YOU support the outsourcing of veterans' jobs....LIKE MINE....to communist China while they serve in the FUCKING military. You say fuck me? I'll see you in hell buddy. I'm a real patriot in it for the long haul. You're just a quisling koolaid drinking republican traitor over there wetting your pants.
@JetMechMA So I was just wetting my pants? What would you know about it boy-oh. So your a vet? What branch, what unit, where were you stationed, where were you deplied? Me 82nd Airborne Bco. 3/504 then Bco. 1/508 Fort Bragg NC, Iraq 3 times Afghan 1. You sound like one of those fobits we use to see over there. Crying about how "Us 82nd guys make the lines for the PX & the MWR long & we should get out of "their base". I said it once & I'll say it again people like you & yours make me & mine sick.
@mrrossn: What would you know about it boy-oh. So your a vet? What branch, what unit, where were you stationed, where were you deplied?
JM: This is what it always comes down to with you communist republican traitors to America, once you find out that a person actually IS a vet, then you question their patriotism anyway. In other words, they aren't good enough unless they are a vet, and even if they are a vet, they aren't a good enough vet. You dishonest PUNK! Traitor!
@JetMechMA Like you do to me? Communist republican traitors to America, once you find out that a person actually IS a vet, then you question their patriotism anyway , once you find out that a person actually IS a vet, then you question their patriotism anyway. @gratitudecampaign i completely support your campaign and think it is awesome but jetmecha has an excellent point it might be awkward for some. maybe you should make a video adressing that point. and the thumbs up could mean any of those things and more. i think that its great if you are just showing your gratitude but again, im not taking sides or anything.
Why would you say "here in America" when we ARE in America? Does it really matter HOW we say "Thank you"? No it does not. What matters is that we do!
A simple nod of the head, a hand to our hearts, a smile, thumbs up, this gesture - I have used them all. But the best ones? Walk up to one of our heroes with a smile and a firm handshake! I ride with the American Legion and the Patriot Guard and alot of times I give a big hug if they are open to it.
@uwishtoo: Why would you say "here in America" when we ARE in America? Does it really matter HOW we say "Thank you"? No it does not. What matters is that we do!
JM: ...because the thumbs up is what we do in America, so I don't know where they got the idea for this other thing. It looks kinda like some sort of a strange, awkward, cult gesture out of a 1980's B movie. Look, anyone can say thanks any way they want to, I just expressed my opinion, that's all.
@uwishtoo: Does it really matter HOW we say "Thank you"? No it does not. What matters is that we do!
JM: I'm going to say it again, I think this notion that America doesn't thank the soldiers is a lie perpetrated by republicans in order to brainwash weak minded voters into voting republican. It is a seditious, divisive, lie. republicans are TRAITORS to America who DESTROY America by outsourcing vet's jobs while they are away at war. The soldiers are pointing their guns in the wrong direction.
@JetMechMA Shut your fucking no nothing mouth. the people do somthing good here. Now I know you would rather have all of the teens spiting on the soldiers when they came back instead of saying thank you. I have bleed for your rights and the rights of this free nation so I say with all do respect "Shut the fuck UP" I am sick of all this Republican this or democarte that just stop it your brining down the IQ of everbosy that reads you drivel.
@JetMechMA Would take a thumbs from you and be humbled...we don't do it for the thanks but when it's offered in any form we take it to heart. We in the service do a head nod to each other (all branches) ..it means simply "been there too and I respect you as well."
Thank you for this video. I have thanked many in the armed forces directly... shook hands...hugged, but this sign is so quick and easy! I can use this for the times everyone is busy and headed in different directions too!!!
My son is a soldier. They usually shrug off a thank you, but it really does mean a lot to know they have support from those they protect :)
Yes it's about time we can do this for our soldiers. I have been in an airport standing there wishing I could convey my appreciation. This gesture is the answer . I wish that the soldiers coming home from Vietnam had thi9s afforded them..........DB from TX
Wherever you are here in our great country, I ask you all to not be shy; be good to every soldier and every family of these soldiers, every where you go. If you're out eating and see a soldier and his family eating, walk up to him and thank him and his family as well, and if you can afford to, pay for their meal. Offer to keep their kids and give the husband and wife a night alone; pay their utilities, their rent, whatever God AND OUR VETERANS SACRIFICIES thru the years, have blessed you with!
While in Iraq I'd get up about 3:30am to walk to the internet shack 3 miles away, and along the way would be passed by dozens of groups of our soldiers who'd already gotten up before me and were out there jogging, male & female, some witih full gear on, staying in shape. I often rode w/soldiers packed in like sardines in aircraft & Blackhawks, often going to the battlefield with them. I now have more respect than ever for our soldiers and thank every single one of them for what they do for us.
I volunteered for the military at age 17 in 1971 but wasn't accepted. My father was in 20 years & now I have two sons who've been in 14 years each. Few years ago I went to Middle East as civilian contractor maintaining FLIR, digital microwave, VoIP, radio, fiber optics, antenna towers, etc; carried 2 60 lb duffle bags plus my Toughbook & PPE everywhere I went after training few weeks at Ft. Bragg and Ft. Benning. Was one of the greatest experiences of my life and would do it again right now.
Hi, I never send a harmful comment or question, I love respect.
I think a constructive critisism is a positive thing. It is a point of view amongst others.
I understand the aim to do good at those people. My view is to do good to other poeple. Propaganda is an old word not very used anymore but is still actual I think. If you prefere the word publicity or campain, think it that way. The aim of a publicity is not to harm people but to influence there jugement in ways to make them buy.
A constructive critisim is a good and positive thing to do, and your video makes me think more of an addvertisment for futur soldiers. I dont wish to debat war versus peace. thank you. Peace .... :-)
@smartti1970 Enough with trying to stir up an issue. Can't people just appreciate that these soldiers deserve some respect. I wish that the soldiers coming back from Vietnam had something like this afforded them.......................DB TX>
@47kiana: I wish that the soldiers coming back from Vietnam had something like this afforded them.
JM: They did. What?....didn't YOU show respect to returning soldiers back then? I did...and so did a greateful nation. It's right wing brainwashing that tells this lie that returning Soldiers from Nam weren't respected. I marched in parades honoring them as a teenager. We used to go to the airport to pick up the neighbor on leave from Nam. Everybody in the airport showed nothing but respect.
While we whine about our latte' not being as we like, or the driver who is doing 10 miles below the speed limit, & of the cold, or the heat & humidity, our military don flak jackets in 120 degree heat & they stand a wall. And they do this for little pay, & far too little thanks. The cost for our freedoms is paid by them--often with life & limb. We need to remember, it's not free. I know a teacher's job is difficult, but when a teacher can make those sacrifices, then I'll compare the two.
@friscolee As I mentioned in my reply to Madshy, teachers and Soldiers are apples and oranges. How 'bout we respect the fact that they both provide a value to society, and not try to compare them at all?
Madshy-While we whine about our latte' not being as we like, or the driver who is doing 10 miles below the speed limit, & of the cold, or the heat & humidity, our military don flak jackets in 120 degree heat & they stand a wall. And they do this for little pay, & far too little thanks. The cost for our freedoms is paid by them--often with life & limb. We need to remember, it's not free. I know a teacher's job is difficult, but when a teacher can make those sacrifices, then I'll compare the two.
Now I live in a military town and have my whole life. My father being a retired Chief Warren Officer. I agree we should all be thankful for our soldiers. But I do not agree with how you mentioned teachers are over paid. They are far from it. Many if not all teachers have to pay for most of their supplies themselves. With so many pay cuts it is a tough time to be a teacher.
Now someone needs to figure out a way to thank all the teachers in public schools who keep taking pay cuts and still keep teaching because they realize how important their job is. The average pay of an american public school teacher is around 39,000. The average pay of soldier is 45,000. We are so in love with this media blitz about loving our soldiers while we have no clue that the failing education system is doing a bigger damage to America than all the people who have attacked America.
@madshy I agree with you that our teachers deserve better pay and better support. I would just encourage you not to compare them to our support for our Troops and Veterans, or to decide that support for one is more or less valuable than the other. They are apples and oranges, and they are both valuable. If you feel as passionately about supporting teachers as we do of supporting Troops and Veterans, perhaps you could start your own campaign, and I would be happy to support it.
Jack Blair2 - Just in case you haven't heard "freedom isn't free". Open your eyes and look around, from the Sudan to Iran and many places in between, that seem free because you don't hear from them until they protest or try to fight back ( think recent Iran, China-Tianamen Sq. )

Thank you for posting this! :D

Not one. It's me who has to say thank you.
miketuch 5 months ago
thanks for clearing that up. i guess its a new sign that some people are trying to make universal, lol.
keebstracy 5 months ago
I love the idea, but I'm kinda confused about the sign...... maybe it's some other sign/signal I don't know about, but the American Sign Language hand sign for "thank you" begins with the fingertips to the chin (not chest) and moves forward and down...... a very similar action, but also very different. I'd hope someone wouldn't form a "campaign" around an errant sign.... because then no one will understand what you are saying and they will never receive their due thanks... :hmmmm:

I will never ever tell someone who has lost a loved one that now your son/daughte
zsedman 7 months ago
This is really cool, but will all service men and women know what the motion means? Usually when I see someone in uniform I just ignore my awkwardness and say thanks, but this is a great idea for people who otherwise wouldn't go up to someone and thank them.
melstarj 7 months ago
Wow, that’s so sad. I mean it’s nice, but it’s so sad that these American men and women go out to fight a war that is not thiers, killing people just like the ones who are wishing thanking them. What an insane World we live in where this sort of inhumanity is possible.

What is the 'email' or written equivalent of this? Kind of a 'in gratitude' sign off....?
montaramama 8 months ago
@montaramama The literal translation of this sign is "thank you from the bottom of my heart". Since this particular sign is an older sign, and not recognized as part of modern American Sign Language, we are using it as specifically targeted toward those who serve. So the written version might be simply, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart"; or "For your service and sacrifice, thank you from the bottom of my heart."
gratitudecampaign 8 months ago 3

If you don't agree with what they're dong, don't get nasty because someone else does.
thank you!

Guyjharrison 10 months ago
@Guyjharrison I'm sorry you see it that way. Speaking of only seeing 5-10%, though, please share with us how it is that we currently have two aircraft carriers off the cost of Japan, each of which have 3 hospitals on board, generate 3,000 gallons of fresh drinking water from sea water daily, and carry wounded people to and from thier on-board hospitals with 6 military helicopters, if all the military does is kill people? Maybe we could ask Haiti? Or Louisiana? These are just suggestions...

That is their job and i am proud to call America my country and I always say thankyou to our soldiers for fighting for us.
WNHS1Chick 8 months ago
@Guyjharrison You do realize that the people who have served in the United States military have granted you the opportunity to voice your opinion on this subject. Every day, Every night there is a uniformed soldier standing a post in a foreign land or here at home ensuring your freedom. I can tell by your words that you have never worn a uniform. Without politics involved, a thank you is in order for a person that risks their life for your safety and well being. Get a hobby, be respectful.
prroden 10 months ago

Yes, these are just a fraction of what soldiers do.

sakonhagakure 11 months ago
@sakonhagakure Not at all. That's not at all uncommon. In fact, that's one of the reasons that we like this gesture so much. It's a way for people to say "thank you for your service" without stopping a service member or invading their pesonal space.
In terms of not knowing how to react, I would offer that you are not expected to do or say anything. A simple, "you're welcome" will typically send them on their way if you're not interested in a long conversation.
gratitudecampaign 11 months ago
@gratitudecampaign
Like making donations to a dissabled veterans charity and remaining Anonymous.
gutterfish47 10 months ago
@sakonhagakure One last thing that I would offer is a reminder that a civlian's desire to thank you for your service is as much about them as it is about you. It's about being grateful for our freedom and security. So if you aren't comfortable accepting their gratitude personally, or if you'd rather just be left alone, then perhaps it might help to simply reframe it in your mind as, "Isn't it nice that you're so grateful for your freedom?" and let go of it being about you personally.
gratitudecampaign 11 months ago
@sakonhagakure I'm in the Army and I go out of my way to avoid wearing my uniform in public. Because of crap like this.
You want to show gratitude? Do all the profits you get from your t-shirts go to dissabled vets? Are you doing something that puts the attention on the sacrifice on the soldiers and not YOU for trying to show "Thanks"
All these campaigns are a ruse, don't have a pepsi and give 50 cents to a veteran charity or keep waving your hands like an idoit with a red shirt on.
gutterfish47 10 months ago
@gutterfish47 I'm very sorry to hear that you are so bitter and angry that you avoid wearing your uniform in public just to avoid people expressing their gratitude to you. That sounds like a very sad place to be. I hope that you find some peace -- even if that means just being left alone if that's what you prefer.
All the best.
gratitudecampaign 10 months ago
@gratitudecampaign I guess the best way to defend against being called out like that is to dodge the topic all together and just attack the other person's credibility. Hey I'm just sad bitter and angry, so I don't know what I'm talking about right?
Anyways, how about you and all your followers actully do something about the military's pay possibly being cut by contacting your congressmen, state senate, to end the budget debate. Or just keep waving your hands at me.
gutterfish47 10 months ago
@gutterfish47 No, I wasn't dodging the topic. I was accepting that you have strong opinions that are not mine to resolve, and that I can't adequately address in 400 characters. If you're truly interested in getting answers to the issues you've raised, I would encourage you to visit the LEARN section of our web site. TO ALL THE PEOPLE IN THE ARMY N TO THOSE THAT HAD DIED THANK YOU
SMILEY9895 1 year ago
It is a simple gesture. A universal sign of thanks in sign language. The campain is just a way to give those who feel akward a common way to show their support for our troops. We do not have to believe in war or the reasons we fight them. Its a way to unite people who believe that our Vietnam vets were horribly mistreated by the very people who should have supported them. A way for people to say sorry by saying thank you.
keebstracy 1 year ago

JetMechMA 1 year ago
@JetMechMA You sound very bitter about something.....I lived through the Vietnam War era, rode the bus through Lincoln Park in Chicago to get to work during the Democratic Convention, the Yippies and armed National Guardsmen on every corner downtown. Yes - most of us appreciated our service people over there, but there was a dislike of the way the war was being handled, and it spilled over to the way our returning soldiers were treated. Continued...............
angiew43 1 year ago
I saw pictures of soldiers being spat on, so don't tell me the troops were not disrespected when they came home.....maybe by a minority, but disrespected nevertheless. I make an effort to shake their hand when I see them, but sometimes the moment is fleeting and I give the heart sign instead. Thumbs up does not represent a 'thank you' to me.......offering my heart does.
angiew43 1 year ago
@angiew43: maybe by a minority...
It's a lie.
JetMechMA 1 year ago
@angiew43: the way our returning soldiers were treated.
JM: ??? How disrespectful is it when republican business owners outsource a soldier's job to communist China while he is away at war? You people have lost your minds. If you want to show a veteran real respect, don't outsource their God damned JOB ! ! ! ! !!!!!! Is that too much to ask? Apparently it is.

47kiana 1 year ago
@47kiana The anecdotes of disrespect towards Nam vets are overblown....WAY out of proportion. The vast majority of Americans respected the servcie of our Vietnam vets. The tiny minority who disrespected them, don't matter.
JetMechMA 1 year ago
I'm sorry, that's just too awkward. Here in America we give the thumbs up. That's the common man's hand signal conveying a positive message....thumbs up. If you want to convey a positive message to a soldier, give them a thumbs up. That's what we do in America. This other thing might be some sort of right-wing code or something, I don't know. I'm stickin with the thumbs up.
JetMechMA 1 year ago
@JetMechMA I'm sorry that you feel that it's too awkward. Of course, if it doesn't resonnate with you, you are free not to participate.
Having said that, we chose this sign because it has a very specific meaning -- "thank you from the bottom of my heart." A thumbs up, on the other hand, can mean anything from "cool" to "good" to "I approve". One thing that it generally doesn't mean is "thank you".
As for what "we do in America"... well, that's a whole other discussion.
gratitudecampaign 1 year ago 3
@gratitudecampaign: You're wrong about the thumbs up. This other thing is just too awkward. Go to other web sites and see what they're saying about it. It's just too strange. I think it's some sort of ill concieved right-wing code that's suposed to demonstrate that right wingers all do it and left wingers dishonor the troops when they don't do it. I got news for you, in America we honor our troops but we don't worship them. Got it?
JetMechMA 1 year ago
@JetMechMA
We're just saying "thank you" here... let's not try to make it more than that.
gratitudecampaign 1 year ago 10
@gratitudecampaign 1. The thumbs up is the all-American thing to do. It always has been. This other thing is too awkward.
2. I disagree, I think most people think it's too unorthodox.
3. I don't think it's necessary to interact with soldiers in the airport other than common courtesy. "Hi guys, hows it going?" That sort of thing. You might say, "Thanks for your service" if you happen to engage them in conversation,. but any more is not necessary. It might actually embarrass them.

JetMechMA 1 year ago
@JetMechMA One word GM. Did you know that every HMV and Uparmered Vehicale that I road & drove in overseas had a GM engine in it? How did they go bankrupt? and wear are you getting that only 8% of jobs in the us are union, Teachers, all gov service workers, my brothers worked for the gas pipeline and you had to be in the union to work, my other brother works in a oil refinery, again you have to be in the union to work. police, fire fighters, service workers, you have me at a lose on the 8%.

JetMechMA 1 year ago
@JetMechMA wow totaly just missing the point. At their hieght there was some 90,000 HMMWVs roleing around Iraq alone, and with replacment engians you are looking at 180,000 engians, my question isn't "How many people live in the US" oh and it is more like 350 million people. Or "How the military only makes up a small fraction of the population." no shit. with a standing force of about 1,400,000 I would never had known that if u hadn't "sat" me down & told me. I want to know why GM went bankrupt

@mrrossn:I want to know why GM went bankrupt
JM: You have no reading comprehension or critcal thinking skills. It's HARD to have a conversation with you if you can't use your mind for simple tasks. We've established that republicans facilitated the outrsourcing of all the good union jobs. Guess what, now all those millions of people can't afford new cars. DUH ! ! ! !!!!!!! Get a clue man!!!!! No sales equals auto-bankruptcy. DAMN!!!! What's it take to get through to you?
JetMechMA 1 year ago

@smartti1970 Is that a question, or an accusation?
If it is a question, one would have to define "propaganda" in order to answer:
1. information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.
Are we deliberately spreading ideas with the intent to help a group of people, and our nation? Yes, we are.
Are we trying to harm anyone? Absolutely not. Quite the contrary.
Does that answer your question?

While we whine about our latte' not being as we like, or the driver who is doing 10 miles below the speed limit, & of the cold, or the heat & humidity, our military don flak jackets in 120 degree heat & they stand a wall. And they do this for little pay, & far too little thanks. The cost for our freedoms is paid by them--often with life & limb. We need to remember, it's not free. I know a teacher's job is difficult, but when a teacher can make those sacrifices, then I'll compare the two.

Wonderful video; I do my part in various ways and have the military on my mind and heart every day. Thank you!
(And re: teachers...yes, apples to oranges. And I -as a teacher - don't have to say "yes" to a possible bullet 24/7 as part of my job.)

Madshy.... Teachers are overpaid and need to stop their constant whining for more money. They don't compare to the soldiers.

@friscolee As I mentioned in my reply to Madshy, teachers and Soldiers are apples and oranges. How 'bout we respect the fact that they both provide a value to society, and not try to compare them at all?

Open your eyes and look around, from the Sudan to Iran and many places in between, that seem free because you don't hear from them until they protest or try to fight back ( think recent Iran, China-Tianamen Sq. )

@detroits2001 Well said. Never hate the people who are serving. Hate the politician who sends them to war. Were you in?? What branch?
