such great memories -- prob only campaign of past 50 years that didn't need "selling" to get people onboard. It was Howard, his capabilities, his stances, his strength, and his identification that the problems were not simply "the republicans", but more importantly, "Republican Lites". The reason why so many people were magnetized by that campaign is that it recognized and promoted the idea that the DLC centrists were (see 2)
(2) (and have now done it) destroying the Democratic party, and its brand, what it stands for. This is also the reason Nancy pelosi hates Howard Dean, and why the Clintons do as well: Because he went gunning for them as well as the GOP.
We who organically formed around this man know that he was taken out even by "our own" --- with the OBL ad in Iowas funded by Gephardt & Kerry support orgs. That campaign would have surely gone all the way.
I would say that it wasn't just Howard. It was the feeling of being a part of this burgenoning national community. The powers-that-be felt that it and Dean had to destroyed before even more Americans woke up and got involved because that would be a serious problem.
The best thing that ever happened for those folks was to have Dean take the DNC Chairmanship, because he's not on the outside of the tent peeing in anymore, but its not good for the average American.
