  • Venezuela? Castro? Whats that got to do with Chile under Pinochet? What do you mean that 'Latin American issues are none of your businees'? Its none of my business? So let me get this straight - you will gladly accept my foreign aid to help you out of the third world mess your in but its none of my business? Latin America would be an impoverished mess without foreign aid and our busineess.

  • Gracias Sting por este tema para nosotros... los chilenos..!!!!

  • I am sorry for your suffering my friend but thank for you willingness to share and educate others. I have seen suffering on this magnitude and it breaks my heart. I carry this with me as well. Peace

  • Search Amnesty Internal and Sting and you'll find some thing more recent about Sting's continued involvement on this issue. I tried to post the link but it would allow it, sorry...

  • Thanks for the civil discourse crusader92. Judging by your name I would think that you are much more activity involved than most. I appreciate that. I wish I could do more personally. In the end I can only speak for myself. My hope is that this is a level of awareness issue and that our better selves will prevail in the end so we'll never have to bare the burden of such horrible injustice (where ever it takes place).

  • @rnick321 Thanks for your comments. I did find some of Sting's more recent activities with Amnesty International, but he seems to refuse to say anything against Castro. I myself suffered a lot under the Hugo Chavez regime in Venezuela (which believes that Castro is a hero), but it was much worse for others. Anyway, it's wrong to torture and kill people regardless of their political ideology. Thanks again!

  • @crusader92 What is your fascination with Fidel Castro? You suffered under Hugo Chavez regime? And now your an expert on political commentary on Pinochet's regime?

  • @btho5531 The question is why do you (apparently not a Latin American) feel so strongly about what happened in Chile under Pinochet? Where are you from? I was born in Latin America (continued)...

  • @crusader92 What has where i was born got to do with you? You were born in Latin America? And did you spend at least two years in every country to know what was going on? Because you asked me to provide links to the Pinochet regime. So you have absolutely no idea - but you feel obligated to lecture everyone else as if you were an authority. Stick to your bedroom computer son.

  • @btho5531 The wretchedness you manifest by saying things such as "Stick to your bedroom computer son." is typical of white, atheist Real Socialists. I smoked you out, and I got under your skin. Sorry about that. But now tell me, where are you from? Don't you see that you've been cornered? If you tell me, then you'll prove my point: You have no business talking on this video about how bad Pinochet was. Didn't you read what a Chilean said yesterday about you? You have no shame.

  • @crusader92 What do you mean that i 'have no business talking on this video about how bad Pinochet was". Where do you get off judging anyone?

  • @btho5531 I'm repeating what ThePuedes said to you. That's a Chilean judging you. Anyway, where are you from? I smell a white Real Socialist. My father was nearly killed in Venezuela by Real Socialists decades ago after he stopped supporting Castro. Do you know that Castro sent fighters into Venezuela? So where are you from? Why do you hide your nationality? What else are you hiding then? These Latin American political issues are none of your business.

  • I wouldn't look at this through too narrow of an lens. There are countless atrocities that are carried out all over the world and this has been a constant plague on humanity. The women had to protest silently and found a very effective way to express this. They would dance alone the pictures of their missing and/or dead loved ones pinned to their dresses (over their hearts). Anywhere, anytime such atrocities happen it is simply wrong and incredibly tragic. Our tears are equal!

  • @rnick321 You sound reasonable. I agree 100% with what you wrote, but if Sting was so involved in the human rights cause, then why the double standard? "It's foreign money that supports you; one day that money's gonna stop" applied in the same way to Castro at the same time, who was also a brutal dictator who executed many people, but Sting even took a vacation in Cuba while Castro was still in power and has never criticized the prison island's tyrant. The other guy doesn't get it. Thanks...

  • Monumental STING arte y denuncia.

  • So beautiful song! It's perfect to listen to! :D

  • I woke up this morning with this song somehow stuck in my head, humming it as I ate breakfast --I have no idea how it got there. It was from my childhood but until now had no idea of its significance or meaning. I found myself compelled to find the song on the Internet and ended up finding the video here.

Watching the video, I read btho5531's comment. Tears started rolling down my face as the understanding of the immense sadness and the power of the song went straight to my very soul.

  • Better come home to me safe Hector, or ill be dancing alone....:/

  • buen tema...no olvidar jamas!!

  • that actor in the middle is Reuban (Blades?) he is a good actor.

  • @jaytotheell Ruben blades,is a singer and actor

  • Perhaps I'm just an overly emotional white girl. But this song always makes me well up with tears for those who are oppressed throughout the world. So many are suffering. I know many nations hate America for what we do. But I truly believe that we have the best intentions and are trying to help prevent these horrible crimes upon humanity as best we can. Best to all! One love!

  • @brianab31 umm... "The U.S. provided material support to the military regime after the coup, although criticizing it in public." (wikipedia) a.k.a. hypocrisy

The US admin's only intention is to preserve the "American Way of Life" (of late only for the 1%?) even if it is decadent, unsustainable and means sucking the rest of the world dry. That itself is the greatest crime to Humanity.

As Gandhi once said- the world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.

  • @WatchinDWorldGoBy Guess what, Americans rarely, if ever, get to vote on what the military does. They do sneaky, underhanded crap without our knowledge. Is it right? No. Can we prevent that which we are not privy to? No. I would like to reiterate that Americans have the best of intentions. Sadly, we are not perfect.

  • @WatchinDWorldGoBy Okay, Negative Nancy. We can roll on that wave if you'd like. As I said, US isn't perfect but we have the best of intentions.

  • @brianab31 I usually well up too. Very haunting song. Each time during the chorus I picture those women dancing alone in silent protest, and it gives me chills. But I love how the song ends on a positive coda. There's hope.

  • @jumpnam Thank you! You said it so perfectly. I agree.

  • The 'choreography' was done by Morleigh Steinberg. She is one of the performers too. Morleigh is also the wife to The Edge (U2)

  • @Tonaleitor no es actor, es Ruben Blades

  • @dominioballo Saludos...también es actor, además de cantautor...

  • A beautiful song. Its just a pity that Augusto Pinochet and his murderers escaped justice for what they did to hundreds of thousands of ordinary people in Chile during the 1970's and 1980's who were political opponents of the corrupt Pinochet regime.

I hope the world never forgets what happened there.

  • @btho5531 True, and sad, that most people don't even know what this song is really about.

  • @btho5531 Augusto Pinochet: celebrated by Ann Coulter, filthy rewpublican pieceof shit\

  • @btho5531 they still gotta face God's Judgment... as we all do. rather be us than them, how 'bout you?

  • @btho5531 songs like this inspire me...

  • @btho5531 Thats right! FUCK PINOCHET, MAY HE BURN IN HELL FOREVER AND ALL WHO SUPPORTED HIM!

  • @btho5531 If Sting had ever composed a song denouncing the atrocities that occurred under Fidel Castro's regime (which remains a dictatorship), would you also identify with that song? And can you prove that "hundreds of thousands" died under Pinochet's dictatorship, and that they were merely political opponents (not a single Socialist coup plotter). Please provide links if possible, and thanks in advance...

  • @crusader92 Fidel Castro? Provide links? What on earth are you talking about?

  • @btho5531 So are you saying that you know what happened while Augusto Pinochet was ruling Chile, but you know nothing about the barbaric atrocities of the Fidel Castro regime in Cuba? Even if you don't, I was asking you to prove (with links, if possible) that "hundreds of thousands" died under Pinochet's dictatorship, and that not a single one of the men he killed was a Socialist coup plotter. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, I can rewrite the question in Spanish.

  • @crusader92 What has this got to do with Fidel Castro? You want me to provide links? You want me to do your research for you? How about this - they wanted to prosecute Pinochet for crimes against humanity when Pinochet left the safety of Chile to go to britain. Please re-write the question in Spanish. It might make more sense than your english.

  • @btho5531 If you claim that "hundreds of thousands" of people died under the Pinochet regime because they were opposed to him, then you should be able to back up that statement. Forget about Castro since I want to keep things simple for you.

  • @crusader92 If you go to the 'Washington Post' website and type in 'Pinochet's chile' which says "According to Amnesty International and the U.N. Human Rights Commission, 250,000 people were detained for political reasons during this period". I couldnt spell it out even more for you.

  • @btho5531 If you had kept on reading the article you mentioned, you would have read that "3,197 people died or disappeared between September 1973 and March 1990 at the hands of state agents." You must learn that "detained" doesn't necessarily mean "killed". Therefore, I have proven you wrong. It's suspicious that you are so passionate about what happened in Chile under Pinochet. If you are a white Canadian or American, chances are you admire Fidel Castro. Thanks for finally providing a source.

  • @crusader92 Never once in my original post did i say that they the word ''killed' hundreds of thousands. All i said is 'what they did to hundreds of thousands'. I am not a 'white canadian or american' and i still dont know what Fidel Castro has got to do with this. Do your parents know that your using the internet?

  • @btho5531 You wrote: "Its just a pity that Augusto Pinochet and his murderers escaped justice for what they did to hundreds of thousands of ordinary people in Chile during the 1970's and 1980's". In that context (MURDERERS) people might think you were saying that the regime killed hundreds of thousands. I asked you to provide a source for this claim several times, and you only denied it when you got trapped by your own source. Learn to read. I wrote: "IF you are a white Canadian or American".

  • @crusader92 There you go. You jumped to the conclusion - hook, line and sinker. Never did i say killed or murdered. And then you went on about Fidel Castro - which you still have not explained. And what has being 'White' got to do with anything? And what has being American or Canadian got to do with anything?

  • @btho5531 (cont.) I know many white Socialists from USA, CAN, NZ, etc. who despise Pinochet simply because he toppled Allende, who was a Socialist and friend of Fidel Castro. You act like a Socialist.

  • wow this is a nice vid

  • I know that these women are supposed to be dancing Cueca, but this doesn't seem a Cueca Chilena to me.

Still I think this is one of the bests songs of Sting, There's a real meaning in all the lyrics.

  • @hikari6986

really matter she is dancing "cueca"? This song is part of "Nothing Like the Sun" and inspired by the testimony of public demonstrations of grief by the wives and daughters of the disappeared in Chile, tortured and murdered by the military dictatorship of the time.

You have twenty-somethings. Never had the opportunity to buy an LP, hear all the songs on an album, read the fine print, thanks, etc.. Sorry ...

Not to be nostalgic, but ....

    Long live the Internet!

  • @mirnareginaortiz Calm down, I was only pointing 'that' out, my dad has the LP you don't have to tell me those things, sorry if my comment bothered you...

  • @hikari6986

Yes, sometimes the lack of sensitivity bother me one bit. But in your case is to be very young. How nice that your dad has the LP. It is a great opportunity to read the content and understand how much feeling put Sting in the lyrics, regardless of the subject.

Feliz Ano Novo para você e sua família!

  • one day i will kiss Sting and he will have to go crazy about me and then i will be sorry for mrs plastic surgery.
