Funny you should say that, as a christian. Sure, it was long ago, but I don't think the conquistadors held back much when destroying native American temples either. Of course I don't blame modern christians for that, but it's still a reminder of what a good friend of all of ours said in John 8:7. Furthermore, doing those things to that church was probably one of the lesser things these men did. Sure, a church is a holy place to christians, but material things are not as important as lives.
