ankagrafka, Riiigggghhhhtttt. The Wikis are ALWAYS the living end. Any airhead with a computer can add their 2 cents' worth to a Wiki.
We're just going to have to agree to disagree. I, for one, will stand by the translation my wife and her family say is correct. After all, they are the ones who have taken a largely undocumented family recipe from Poland to national TV.
You can believe whatever you and your Wiki want. Garbage In-Garbage Out Far as I'm concerned, the matter is closed.
It's interesting that the term has been used verifiably for over 100 years just in Karen's family as "cooffee cake." Even more interesting is that her grandmother (to whom the recipe is attributed) emigrated here from Poland and the handwritten "recipe" is titled, "Placek/coffee cake." And Karen's Aunt Theresa asks, "How many 'just cakes' do you make with yeast, you dummy?"
@radically4rad, Not sure where you got your translation but it is incorrect. The old saying "it got lost in the translation" fits perfectly. Translation software looks for the lowest common denominator, as I learned very quickly when trying to learn to write in Vietnamese. I was constantly being ribbed and being outright laughed at by my Vietnamese tutor in Ho Chi Minh City. I assure you "Placek" means "Coffee Cake" in Polish
I saw your appearance on Martha back when it first aired and recently decided to make some placek of my own. I tried your recipe and the results were wonderful! Thank you for sharing your babcia's recipe with everyone. :)
Sorry, Thomas1986, I neither speak or read Polish. I am a certified Mississippi Redneck so Southern is my only language outside of English!

I'm sure it has/had some other name than 'placek.' Placek is the generic Polish word for cake, so she's just saying this cake is called cake, lol.
