@RichardElden Yes he would have but there would have been another crisis in the world other than Cuba that Nixon would have not had a cooler head but this is all "maybe if" questions that never happen. So it stands, the world is still here because of cooler heads and thinking about the situation then acting on it.
@RichardElden True but I do believe the Cold War was building up and if Nixon was in office instead of Kennedy, BYE BYE EARTH. The only thing that had to happen is someone on either side to open fire on someone to have an act of war and that act would have been, next action that is, was launch ICBM's. Those were the times that these people were living in.
@RichardElden The winner was reason and cooler heads prevailing. Not the U.S., or the U.S.S.R. or Cuba. If there was a winner Kennedy and his administration stopping a global nuclear holocaust on both sides. And the lose of Major Anderson in his U2 spy plane over Cuba was tragic for his family and country. This crisis wasn't measured in winners or losers. If we would have lost the human race along with Youtube wouldn't be here right now.
I always get a kick out of watching this and the scene in Thirteen Days. Adlai and I both graduated from the same high school (U-High) and grew up in Bloomington, IL
what if say, Cheney was there? Well, Soren, uh, are there.. known missiles in Cuba, or unknown missiles? We know they're there, but we also know that you know that we know they might be there.. Ambassador, we have known 'knowns'."
Was Adlai Stevenson laughing after he said "Don't wait for the translationl yes or no?" I cannot tell with the black and white. Or was he with a straight face?
Okay because @ :25 it looks as though his lips are smiling. But I guess not. He should've ran for president. He would've been a better choice than Johnson.
@CazK88 I think the Cold War, particularly Vietnam, would have played out much differently, but I'm not sure whether it would have been for the better or worse.
@brisco42 - Right you are! I worked for his son, Adlai E. Stevenson III when he ran for re-election to the US Senate. All connected w/ the Stevenson Operation were decent & highly professional. Some of us wondered if Adlai IV ("Four" to us) would carry on the family name if he ever had a son. I left Illinois & lost direct touch, however, I later read that, after much thought, Ad IV decided to HONOR his grandfather's shining moment & stellar career. There IS an Adlai Stevenson V. Best Wishes.
@jimwalsh2001 Liberals now compared to then are absolutely nothing alike. Today, we would rather give them money to take them out, then when they buy and place more, we'd hold a summit to give them food which would be siphoned off to the military or sold.
Give em' hell Adlai.

According to C-Span`s The Contenders series, Stevenson was intentionally given flawed information on the missiles in Cuba.
I do love this film clip.

If Stevenson had shown some of this assertiveness when he was running for President, he might have made a stronger showing

That's tension relieving...as in a play after several serious moments, the lightest comment gets a laugh.
It seemed incongruous but normal.

I like how people are laughing as quite possibly the destruction of the entire world lies in the balance.

He ran in the 1950's for president on the Democratic ticket. In '52 & in '56. He would have been a great president. No BS about him.
brisco42 2 years ago 2
@brisco42 and when Stevenson ran (beat by Eisenhowever) JFK was almost nominated as vp on the ticket....good thing he waited.
histre101 1 year ago
@CazK88 He did, three times. Twice he lost to Eisenhower, and the last time Kennedy got the Democratic Nomination instead of him

@brisco42 Yes. Stevenson was pretty much a straight shooter as well. Perfect for this confrontation.

Just don't mistake a liberal of that era with modern liberals. Today's liberals are bleeding heart spineless pussy's!
