  • I have to agree with whole brushing thing. I have neither combed nor brushed my hair since I stopped straightening my hair 3 months ago and it has already grown three or four inches.

  • Is hair supposed to look more defined and curly the more it grows out?

  • Brushing-No wonder I have thin edges. Thanks for that tip, so very much. I have been brushing my hairline like on daily basis.

  • according to the experts, natural hair doesnt need as much protein as chemically processed hair because the hair is in its natural state and the protein bonds havent been broken in order to get ti straight, so protein needs are less for natural hair. I can understand this concenpt, because my hair broke like crazy when i was natural before and i had no clue why. Turns out i was using high rpotein products almost daily. I'm so glad i know better now. this time around, my hair should thrive.

  • I need 2 get those books to further educate myself.I totally agree with the more frequent washing bc I have sebborrhic dermatitis.I found when I increased washing it seemed to go away.Th ORS hair mayo is the bomb!It is the only protein conditioner that makes my hair soft! The wide tooth comb has always worked better for me ! I do have the Conair Denman but dont use it much!

  • once a week for type 4 hair. every 4 to 5 days it too much. she does not take into consideration the knots we get for wetting and washing that leads to breakage. I have followed her advice when my hair was shortor but at your lenght, you will soon realise it is very time consuming to wash every 4 days and the manipulation is higher. Not good for kinks. I advice to go check this hair blog: thenaturalheaven

  • Since my hair is color treated and having 4 hair type I deep condition every time I shampoo. Since I have been doing this I have seen my hair flourish.

  • Love your hair girl.....I need to get those books and do more reading on hair......Can't wait to see what you do with it when you go away.

  • This was a very informative video! Thank you for sharing.

  • I agree with the washing. If I go without washing for more than 5 days my scalp is itching like crazy. Regular washing and deep conditioning has eliminated the itch and the comb glides through my hair with and without conditioner. I guess it is because I deep-condition over night as well and I stick to the same products.

  • Sounds like a very informative book. I like the info about ph and brushing. I totally agree with the brushing situation, I finger comb only. You r more open minded than me, I took exception to "Struggling with nature" and washing making our hair look less matted and greasy. Isnt it physiologically impossible for our hair to look greasy as well? Last I researched curly hair was the driest on the planet. I would have liked to hear more from our chapter, perhaps she had some useful advice.

  • @curlmebella Don't take what I was reading out of context. Lol. I only read snippets of the book. Struggling with nature was in reference to everything we do to our hair to take it out of its natural state - i.e., relaxers, press, perm, jerri curl and etc. She meant that grease and oil clog hair follicles in which the circulation is almost choked and the result is stunted hair growth...

  • @mstanish1 Thanks- this really helps:-) That makes much more sense, may have to pick up this book.

  • @curlmebella its hard to say its impossible for our hair to look greasy when we put so much grease/oils in our hair. So she has a valid point in the book and thats wash more frequently to prevent PRODUCT BUILDUP

  • The author makes sense. I wasted my money on a denman brush - only to find that a wide tooth comb detangles wet hair better with less hair loss.

  • @curliefro Same here gurl...learned the hard way. I have a conair knock off but all the same, and with a wide tooth there is hardly any hair in the comb as opposed to the brush.

  • @curliefro I agree with you curliefro! i bought a denman brush and looked like half my hair came out! I revisited it a year later because i saw a video on taking out the rows and so i tried that and it still took out a lot of hair, so i found a shower wide tooth comb and it works so well now.

  • I shy away from protein deep conditioners, shampoos, or conditioners instead I use moisturizing deep conditioners (I will now try the elestra QP when I did my braids out), shampoos, or conditioners. My hair is corse (mixture of 4B, Z, etc..) which makes it very dry and in constant need of moisture--I stop using product with protein b/c I believe it makes my hair dryer and prone to breakage. I do use Mane n' tale once in a while and wash my hair 4X/week due to excercise. What do you think?

  • @NadegeP1 Hair is 90% protein (amino acids) so I don't really understand when people say they are protein sensitive. Protein in condish coats the outside of the hair, filling in gaps between the cuticles, which protect the hair and add a soft feeling. My hair loves protein but my scalp hates it. My scalp needs are different from my hair needs. I have dry hair but not dry scalp. My shampoo is cleansing to my scalp but not drying to my hair. Use a moisturizing shampoo that doesn't dry hair out.

  • @mstanish1 same here i have the hardest time getting conditioner off of my scalp but it makes my hair feel sooooo good and i NEED conditioner

  • Interesting book. That section about natural and organic products got me interested. You know I have never cared about using all natural products. The only thing in my stash that is natural are my oils and shea butter. And my hair has still grown very well. So I agree with her on that. I agree with the washing part. I have to wash my hair at least every 4 days or twice a week. Once a week max or I end up with flakes.

  • I never brush my hair (unless I'm doing a puff which is not often) despite of what I hear about brushing being better than combing. It always seemed more damaging to me verses using a wide tooth comb. I have to step my game up with washing though. My hair is in protective styles 98% of the time so I don't get to wash as often as I should. Thanks for the informative info. I gotta check her book out.

  • even when i had a perm i would wash my hair AT LEAST once a week. i never understood ppl who could go a month w/o washing. that's just so gross to me... then again i never really had problems w/ hair dryness, i guess it's a chicken and egg situation for me (did not having dry hair make me wash more often, or did washing often make my hair less dry) lol

  • wait... "on wet hair, it's best to either use a..." what? you edited that part out.

  • I completely agree with the statement with washing the hair every 3 to 7 days. I have been transitioning out of my relaxer for 14 months now and I wash my hair as suggested. The amount of new growth I have gotten is amazing and I attribute it to my washing regimen. Healthy hair can not grow out of a dirty scalp! I started my journey with chin length hair and now my hair is well pass my collar bone.

  • thanks for sharing!

  • Hmmm...still not buying the new 'thing' of washing your hair more. More than not, I believe the problem stems from the actual neglect of the hair, and scalp vs washing. IMO making sure the scalp is refreshed, and clean is most essential via: natural astringents, oils than contain a fair amount of anti- microbial/anti-bacterial actions like Tea Tree oil, and Grapeseed.!!

  • I agree the denman brush is a waste of money, good thing I brought the fake one. I do just fine and lose less hair with a Big Shower comb. I wash my hair one a week when I twist it,but I find that if my hair is down in the curly state I wash almost everyday and thats too much so until further notice I am twisting my hair or puffing it , more than likely it will be twists because I do them BIG and I wear beanies to protect my hair and keep it off my mind. this method truely works for me.

  • Yea i agree with the points that you mentioned. I've never had the slightest interest in using a denmen brush, but i do own a paddle brush, but i don't use it unless i may need to blow dry, which i don't own a blow dryer as of yet. Thanx for sharing!!

  • Thanks for the advice

  • very nice vid, good info. its interesting that she thinks its worse to comb while hair is wet...i didnt know that

  • @FLYGERIANEST1991 Its best to use a comb on wet hair not a brush is what the author was saying. And if you are going to brush wet hair don't over brush and use a wide bristled brush with rounded tips... I may have edited that part out on accident...

  • The author has good points, I agree with each and every one of them simply because of my ongoing experience with no combing, frequent washing, and low manipulation. put all three together and it will equal out to: less split ends or none at all, healthy looking hair, and a lot of growth.
