My personal opinion, as a jazz musician, and someone who plays this song with his own quartet, I have this to say : I think the head was well done, as was the first half of the sax's solo. however, you just started to wank halfway through, and that sounded crappy. it's a beautiful song; wanking, in my opinion, doesn't fit.
the piano solo was great, and I would have liked to hear more from him.
overall, it's a 4/5 for me, simply because of the second half of the tenor solo. hold back!
@dreadmaker I agree with you 100%. I used to play like that second half of the solo when I've had too much to drink. I had to stop drinking at gigs, cause I would just go off into another world...lol. Maybe try that on a Coltran song that would have worked out better. It's too much for this style. The first half was really nice though.
The drummer isn't just a drummer. He's being a musician and being just as free as the other musicians in this video. You are probably used to hearing just big band stuff and not combo stuff. You shouldn't be so full of yourself and think of other players as inferior just because they have a different way of thinking and playing. That's like me saying I think that Europeans are only good with Big band stuff and should play more combo stuff. Which I know isn't the case, but its how I see it.
wtf? I'm a pro Afro-Cuban & Brazilian percussionist, not a kit drummer AT ALL. "Full Of myself?" If you don't want comments then disable them. I can spell it out for you, the drummer can wag his tail all he wants to, but while doing that if the tempo suffers, then the groove is GONE. American drummers do just that 99.9% of the time.
dont know why you threw that anti american stuff in there, there are plenty of american drummers who just like to keep time and thats certainly what they teach at my school. time first, everything else second.
The pianist shouldnt really be playing the roots and what the bass is playing. Stick to the color notes, the bass can hold its own, and it helps in walking basslines overall in jazz, to let piano/guitarists do color notes and omit the root.
HEY!.....can SOMEONE HELP ME!!!>....i have a Sax Solo stuck in my head and i cant get it out....thing is...i dont know WHAT ITS CALLED!: O.....its old....from like back in...umm 80's maybe...anyways ....someone wnats to help get back to me! lol
80's saxophone solo: Baker Street (re-edit by Undercover - original from Gerry Rafferty in the 70's) or Careless Whisper from George Michael. Other famous 80's sax pieces : "Lili was here" from Candy Dulfer, "One Step Beyond" from Madness.
OMG...I meant Coltrane!!
