Absolutely fantastic!!! Finally a tribute to a singer who paved the way. My husband worked with her in the 1950s in New York and has recorded two songs on Kalos Diskos with her. I played one of the songs and he said "Listen to that authentic pure voice. There is no one else like her." I wish the best and good success to the makers of this film. Niko and I hope to see it when it premieres here in Los Angeles this Friday, June 10, 2011.
For me it was a great adventure to see the story of Roza Eskenazy and follow the trip through her music. Amazing woman, amazing story, amazing trip. A great documentary for Greek music and Greek culture. I had the chance to learn an interesting story that I didn’t know. It is a very emotional and touching film…
I watched this film too at the doc fest in Thessaloniki. I think that you are exaggerating! There are some points that made political reference but not to such an extent. The real quality of rebetiko is of course present, especially from the point that these songs are still being performed today. The intercultural connection of these different cultures was there in every step of this journey with the 3 musicians and all the others that shared this music in all those concerts
i watched this film at the doc festival of thessaloniki...at some point i got confused - i was not sure to whom was this doc referring to..roza or the jews - some political statements in the film despite the fact they were correct need to be heard within a different context in a another film ...this is not what we need in the times we live-i felt the real qualities of rebetiko music were missing and the attempt of connecting different cultures through rebetiko collapsed -

What is the song in the background called? It's amazing. I would also love to know what's it about and how it translate to English?

The song is called Ela Na Se Kano Makia, Come and give me a kiss. It was recorded by Eskenazi during the 50's in Istanbul.
You can find it in a recent compilation by Lyra records.
