The 'reboot' or remaking of Star Trek should be compared to the different eras of Batman... the campy series ofthe 60s, to the interesting drama of Tim Burton, to the recent Dark Knight. Redoing it shouldn't take away from previous stories, in fact updated modern stories and technical effects can only add to the legacy.

It can be easy to get caught up in a whole host of scenario's, how does this new continuity effect the movie era stuff of the eighties and nineties and the TNG era? has that all seized to exist? technology is clearly far ahead of where its supposed to be at this point in the timeline! the bridge of the new Enterprise reminds me of the time ship relativity which is supposed to be from the 29th century.

The first Abram's Star Trek movie basically establishes a new continuity it makes you wonder how it affects the whole star trek universe, there's nothing stopping a future director from treating this continuity like the mirror universe and returning to the "prime continuity"
