I'm in the process of learning a Boston accent for a show I'm in. And the way you guys explain the "a" pronunciation is confusing. If I were to say can't and bath like the "a" in Father I would sound British. I'm thinking that maybe you're Boston accent is so hard core that you don't know how to say Father in a standard American accent. That or I need to hear it. Is there anyway you can explain this better. I'd totally appreciate it.
One thing I think is hilarious is that while everyone focuses on how Bostonian drop the 'r', they forget about how it ends up in places it doesn't belong.
Example: 'Idear' <-- I always hear south shore folks say that, it makes me lol.
god I miss this accent! I moved to Vermont when I was younger- my mom's idea- and all the kids picked on me for calling soda "tonic" and saying "Cah" and "wicked"... and I let 'em pressure me into dropping it :( I mean, when I go home, I have it again... but being up here... *sigh* In Vermont everyone OVER does the Rs...
Nope, you hear alot of that "half" "bath" thing in towns like Malden, Everett, Saugus, etc. Usually spoken by older people, too. It's a linguistic thing that is fading away.
your trying way too hard to have an accent, its so obvious you don't actually have that accent.

You don't have a Boston accent. You can only learn it by moving up there

My advice to you is just to keep in your mind "be the sheep". Just keep focusing on that, and you should be fine.
