I´ve got a new Kindle. I´ve downloaded for free some books. Do I have to register the Kindle when I get it or I can skip that register step, and still use the Kindle and the get the updates?
Can you use this Kinde without having an account on Amazon? I saw another review and the first thing that popped up when he started the device was a requirement to login to his Amazon account...
Yes you can use the Kindle without an Amazon account but you won't be able to set the date & time nor can you make collections. If you want to do either then you have to have an Amazon account and register your new Kindle.
@Umbrellatoo How can I Use The Kindle without registering it with Amazon at first boot up? How can I do that? I´ve downloaded some books for free. If I don´t register the Kindle with Amazon, can I Still use it and use all the features? such as firmware updates? Thankx!
@tomnikond600 You have to register the device if you want the updates or if you want to make collections on the device & a few other things. If you don't register it, you don't get the updates.
@Umbrellatoo Thankx Man. Another thing: I´ve downloaded books for free. If I register the kindle, will Amazon know that those books that I´ve download for free are free? Will I have anyproblem with that?
@tomnikond600 I don't know. That depends on how you define 'free'. Are they illegally downloaded books or freely available classics? I have no idea but I do know that if you don't register it you don't get the updates nor can you make collections and other things.
Does this work if you don't have wi-fi? and can you only use amazon to put books on it or can you just download them from torrent sites and put them on it?
@MobileTechReview So i can use other sites apart from amazon to get books, say i download a ebook torrent and put it on the kindle does it look the same as ones you buy?
Tnx for the great review, it helped me cement my decision; I'm buying this baby in January (I have to wait to collect money from all the relatives on Christmas day :P)
go to the "Amazon Kindle Keyboard 3G w/Free WiFi & E Ink Display: Unboxing and Review" video to get an honest and knowledgeable review of the Kindle Keyboard 3G
Regarding the 3G version -- Amazon seems to imply that the browser only works with WiFi and that 3G is only for downloading books. Is that true? If you don't know please look for that if you review the 3G Kindle. Thanks.
@quantumystery Yes, we do know that. The upcoming Kindle Touch will let you browse/download only books on 3G. Since the Kindle 4th gen reviewed here doesn't offer 3G version, this info is not relevant for this Kindle. Stay tuned to our Kindle Touch review.
Any advice to someone who's never owned an e-reader? Kindle4 or wait for the KindleTouch? Spring the extra $50 for the Touch3G? Are the "guts" the same and only have a different way of accessing the keyboard? Seems like a touch keyboard would be easier, but I don't know how often one actually uses it. Thanks for any input!
@schwinging I would get the cheapest model. The keyboard isn't very useful, and the touch edition doesn't have page turn buttons. the guts are identical.
The guts aren't the same. Kindle classic has only 2 GB of memory, Kindle touch 4GB. Battery life is twice longer in Touch version. Besides, what is perhaps less important Kindle touch has speakers and stereo audio jack while Kindle Classic has not.. So it doesn't have text to speech option. On the other hand Classic version is slightly lighter, and has hardware buttons for page turning, what is an advantage for me because preserve the screen from being dirty.
@ArmanAbedi The Kindles allow you to connect the device to your computer and copy .pdf files. You also get an @kindle.com address to send .pdf files via email for a fee.
The same crappy 800x600 resolution. Why should I upgrade from kindle 3?
Maybe a kindle touch DX would tempt me. Or a generous price cut in DX from 379$ to 179$.Kindle 3 as kindle 4 suck on pdf support,Iriver released an xga 1024x768 res. model. Was it too hard for you Amazon, to upgrade resolution as well?
Lisa, Very good job, as always... I think that you should copy the link of the full review on the description. well, just my opinion, u should think that for future reviews. :)
@Hyper92793 It's for reading. The E-Ink is a lot easier to read while being outside than the screen of an iPad, the Kindle is lighter and doesn't weigh as much and the battery life is faaaar superior to the iPad.

The Kindle 4 is built for the iMX50 (800MHz ARM Cortex A8) platform.
The Kindle 3 is iMX35 (532MHz ARM).

why is no one talking about that weird "black" that occurs when u turn the pages..it sucks
TheNoCoincidence 1 month ago
@TheNoCoincidence Because the Kindle 4 only rarely does it, maybe every 10 pages compared with older models that did it every single page turn.
