Thanks for posting this vid. Date's FH was so very different than anyone on the tour when she played earlier. As you said straight back and through, she hit it so flat. Her FH reminded me a lot of the Conners FH, though Jimmy would turn his trunk a bit more....
Perhaps "Old School" is a misnomer: I've combed through a bunch of vids from the wooden-racket eras (after the late 1960s) and couldn't find anyone who has Date's takeback. In fact, I was surprised to see a lot of loopy swings, including Laver and Evert. McEnroe is the closest I've found to Date, but even he uses a mild half-loop.
@BevelDevil nah, it's appropriate, it's her follow through that is old school. All the newbies are swinging fan style. she's like 39...and still kicking huh?
@hi10spro You are wrong. Her style is her own invention. There is a 5 parts Youtube video that shows how her style came to become as it is. She invented her style with help by her coach in order to play top players at that time who played like, say, young ones these days.
@hi10spro Another upload that talks about her excellent ability for anticipation. The talk on the video is by Shuzo Matsuoka. This seems to be another reason why her signature 'rising shot' was born. She also made a comment recenlty as to if she is a slow starter. She says, because of her style, it takes time to adjust her tennis. Everybody says the same? Well, u would know what it means to her if you really understand 'her style.' BTW, the same Q was also made in her first carrer.
Very thoughtful vid. Nice to see Mrs Date-Krumm practising. Such a classy player, clever and super fit. Did you see her beating Safina in Roland-Garros 1st round ? My jaw fell down on the floor !
Kimiko D.K. finally won that tournament, beating Kirilenko (WTA 54) in SF then Medina Garrigues (WTA 23) in final. Clever, daring, very fit : an example and a lesson for other players. Thank you Kimiko !
I love her strokes and I disagree with you about the pace she gets. I think she gets a very nice amount of pace, she directs the ball back with her flat strokes to rebound the pace given with even more pace. Did you see her at Wimbledon? She was incredible and truly an inspiration. Good video man are you from Thailand, jw. Is Tanasugarn really a nat'l hero in Thailand? That's awesome! She is also a phenomenal player.
Amazing how her strokes have absolutely now extraneous movements anywhere! Her racket head goes right through the ball. She's definitely a unique player.
You think so? Well the 2 thai female players I know are Tanasugarn and Lertcheewakarn, Tanasugarn is a little bit ugly and Lertchewakarn is not beautiful, her nose is awful. I think that japanese people age better because they're more advanced than Thais, but it's my opinion cause I'm not asian
Yes, but I mean, Japanese people's technology, cosmetics, etc. is incredible, perhaps the best of the world because you see a beautiful woman aged 50 and you think she is 35
Interesting. Thanks for posting. Kimiko is still very fit, and even without a huge back swing she manages to give a correct speed to the ball. That's totally awesome that she is back in WTA top 150 now !
my friend and I think it's crazy that she can come back after being out 10 years. Or Davenport after a baby...or Hingis... where's Graf? um is that a statement of women's tennis or how hard they work... hmm in men's who has made a comeback...

@tomashiby what's the link? I like her style--VERY SIMPLE--easy to do, but hard to generate pace over and over, i think--simple is always going

i wonder what she would have done if she was able to play left handed.

@idontsignin hmmm..she is small but women don't need to worry about size so much
hi10spro 1 year ago
@hi10spro she played a fantastic game yesterday beating safina, i only wondered cause she used to be left handed and was forced to play right handed.
