  • I was in Belfast the year before as a catholic staying with a protestant family and none of us could see the sense in any of the violence it was so sad to see it escalate the way it did

  • At the end of the day the situation as I think stands like this Catholics were persecuted beyond belief the Civil Rights movement tried it's best to bring about an American style Revolution of Justice, this was shot into the ground on Bloody Sunday, NICRA fell apart at the seams simply because the only language the Unionist Government in Stormont recognised was that which came from the muzzle of a gun. In response to this the PIRA demonstated to the British Government their own type of diplomacy

  • England - you have no right to be in Ireland. Get out of Ireland.

  • I feel sorry for the children.

  • I think Monarchies are retarded by definition and religions are positively harmful. This entire situation is laughable. Silly humans killing each other over the most credulous ideas.

  • it's the Huns Flait.we have a right to live' they prosecuted us for years the way we what and no @vespauk125 it's our home not urs the ira was freedom fighters not terriosts go back home u bastard now how do u feel. it's our homes our contriy not urs we have the right to do what we want ira forever

  • 90% of them are!! Great upload btw. Up the RA.

  • I have Irish blood and am proud of it. I'm also Protestant and equally proud.

As far as I am concerned, and in the name of my fore-bearers, there should be no retreat and no surrender!

  • To dynamitesout, I live in a Manchester thats a lot closer to NI than NH! And If a bomb ripped your city apart, as it did mine not so many years ago...im pretty sure you would have a different opinion on the situation...although im also pretty sure that would never happen in sleepy NH! And just for the record Im from a proud Irish catholic family living very happily in Manchester, England....And the sad reality for you my friend is this...you really hav`nt got a clue what its all about. Sad

  • Ordinary people talking common sense - one of the few things that nobody ever listens to :-(

  • That was the IRA kiling their own poeple, how can you say they are not at fault? They caused devastation to their own people and you support them?

  • @Sukkii25

Sukkii, you can't look at it in such a way. Catholics just wanted jobs and a safe environment for their wives and children. Pretty much what any man want whether it's Belfast or Baghdad. Protestants were fearful of not only being abandoned by Westminster but by being overrun and slaugtered by Catholics. You had a dreadful situation and it was all the making of the British Crown, i.e. cling on to something, divide and conquer and fuck the little people.

  • USA's Manchester, NH sends its love to the strong and proud Roman Catholics that have fought for their equality and beliefs hand over fist. My respect goes out to the regular people in a backwoods army that has kept the federally funded British Army at bay to this day. Hundreds of years and still the brits have nothing close to total control. Such a strong people. How could you not be proud to be Irish? Bring back the TRUERepublican Army! Never forget! Never settle for less! Fight! Fight! Fight!

  • @dynamites0ul Knob, clueless mouthy people like you makes it worse, I have been to NI and where I live Liverpool has a high number of Irish people, I also have friends in Ireland, a lots Irish Citizens serve in the British Army, gobshites like you is on par with Ian Paisley.

  • what a collection of brave wise people interviewed! we could certainly take many leaf's from their books.

  • better intelligence? what a dumb remark, is english her second language or something?

  • Pray for Irelands dead; pray the Rosary the same Rosary that was prayed by generations of Irelands Children through dungeon , famine, fire and sword. Click my link to be taken to an Irish site that promotes the Old Ways and prays for Irelands Dead.

  • @rapartist43 *an

  • @rapartist43 youre the ones who started it! Back in 1920 in the irish war of independance and english army tank drove on to the pitch at croke park and killed many people.

  • @texpeare cheers

  • I'm an American and therefore anything I say on this subject would sound unforgivably ignorant. However, I must say that Ireland is full of brave men and women who deserve peace. My heart is with you.

  • @joearsenal1963 Well TheNewlodge [.] com, or any other website didn't excist in those times. VIdeo is caption as people tend to download them, and the owner (rushlight) can contact if they wish for the video to be removed.

  • 5 Stars , brought back a lot of memories of the Falls (Lenas shop etc ) , but i have to PMSL when i read comments from bell ends saying who started it esp when they weren't born until 20-30+ years after it started

  • imagine serving in ww2 and 20 years later having to live with this sh1t, elderly in NI deserve medals just for dealing with this for 40 years

  • these people are the real irish, isnt it a pity that their mentality and spirit is a thing of the past

  • Isn't religion a wonderful thing?

  • I hate those damn brits patroling the streets!!! Bring in the Óglaigh na hÉireann!!!

  • @thomasgangsta in 1960s the Irish Army couldn't fight anything as they were so run down, basically a spent force, the Loyalist would run rings round them in no time ! RUC overwhelmed, it would have been slaughter on the scale of Bosnia, that was prevented by the British Army.

  • Lived a united Ireland. Greetings from Croatia.

  • it makes you wonder how people started listening to idiots like mcguiness and paisley. Think of all the airtime those psychopaths got, yet all the ordinary people who just wanted peace barely got a word in edgewise. Its bloody mental.

The problems with media society or so evident even now with the war on terror where the nutters from both sides get the chance and airtime to whipup sentiment amongst people who shouldnt be interested.

We're all just people for gods sake

  • Northern Ireland is catholic, we are catholics, screw the brits and the anglicans

  • @Beirutien Where does that leaves the Protestant who were born in NI, they didn't choose where they were born, its their home as much as it is the Catholics ?

  • Sorry to say not much as changed since, utp

  • Thank God For The Brave Men Of The I.R.A

  • is there no sou8nd on this ?

  • "one of their worst crimes was denying the catholic minority one man one vote."

You make it sound as if catholics didn't have the right to vote which is just bollox...

this video is great...getting to see all the old streets in the Clonard/Cupar/Shankill area is fascinating....been straining my eyes to try and recognise some of the street signs but no joy...anyone have a better insight into the actual street names???

  • @Irwinner77 Some people had more than one vote, those who owned certain companies had a vote for each company and their own vote, the Lord Mayor of Derry/Londonderry had 7 votes.

Also, Derry/Londonderry was split into 3 regions, 1 catholic and 2 protestant. The Catholic region made up 70% of the population and had 8 council seats. The two protestant areas made 15% each but each of these received 6 seats each. All in all the Catholic vote meant nothing at the time.

  • well done to the newlodge good videos wish you well on more to come SLAN CARA

  • @LEGEENDKILLER500

Depends on the speed of your connection

  • Séamus Mallon said in 1998 that the Good Friday Agreement is Sunningdale for slow learners and yet it seems that Sunningdale was a treaty for slow learners even then based on what most people on this clip said. Even in 1969 the people wanted an intergrated education system and the removal of ghettos with integrated housing. How sad that it's taken until now to even start gaining those objectives. Why did it take so long? We must all be so thick!

  • liking the guys horns at 21.10

  • liking the guys horns at 21.12

  • @skoi87 the UDA was not formed till the 70s the UVF was the first active Loyalist Paramilitary organisation. The first recorded Loyalist 'hit' was McGircs bar .. I think you may have your fact muddled a little.

To be honest bickering like this on who did what when is not progresive. we should be looking at what we have in common not what we dont. Common ground and shared values is what brings peace.

  • Great channel, great contribution, it's a great reminder of what we do not want to see happen ever again.

We should not and will not forgot the past but we will never move forward by focusing on the wrongs of the past.

As one man said in this film , Education and Integration is the only solution.

There are many fantastic people both Catholic and Protestant in Belfast, now is their time to be heard.

  • facts are facts..... the "TROUBLES " started because the catholic minority in the north of IRELAND were denied basic civil rights. we were treated like 2nd class citizens in our own country by a corrupt and sectarian bigoted N . I . GOVERNMENT. one of their worst crimes was denying the catholic minority one man one vote. we took the martin luther king stance, and we have " OVERCOME ".

  • No one was disputing how the troubles started, or that the Northern Irish government was corrupt at the time, hence why it was dissolved. I don't think that you can reasonably compare Martin Luther King to Republican paramilitaries though, as far as i knew, Martin Luther King was led peaceful protests, and that's part of the reason why he is held in such high regard to this day?

  • Well said Martain Luther King was 100% peaceful like Gandi.

  • @flute4hire Thank you.

  • the IRA chose the path of violence and the Loyalists followed. It acheved nothing but missery on both sides.

  • @flute4hire Yes, i believe that too. It was my sentiment throughout, that violence solves nothing. However, some people (as seen on this thread) seem to idolise the IRA.

  • @PulpxFairy the IRA are scum, the UVF/UDA arnt much better. my family have been on the receving end of IRA violence.

  • @flute4hire Yes that's true. All paramilitaries should be denounced, i can't see how anyone can defend that sort of violence, from both sides. Im sorry to hear about your family.

  • @flute4hire the loyalists chose the path of violence u mean the uvf killed the first victims in 1966 pure sectarianism

  • @djleesus09 get over it, stop the culture of blame and move on...

  • The protestants didnt have those rights eather.

  • I love the way that people try to claim the moral highground and then actively show their support to paramilitary groups such as the IRA, UDA, UFF, UVA etc. If you're protesting against people getting killed, don't show your support for these groups.

  • ...that's right. Anyway, i find it funny the way the woman at 2230 going on about how in England the ydon't fight over religion, and why can't it be so..And here we are, 40 years later fighting Muslims...

  • easy for you say....you were not born under these british murdering bastards. in 1969 there was no I R A in belfast or derry. they were re-formed to defend the catholics who were terrorised and murdered by the brits.

  • @PulpxFairy

Is there a reason you didn't include the British Army in that list of groups?

  • The British Army isn't an illegal paramilitary force, hence why it was not included. Love the way people assume i don't know what it's like to live in Northern Ireland, just because i commented on how there are more peaceful solutions. Blowing people up on either side is going to get people's backs up, whether they think they're in the right or not.

  • @PulpxFairy

They may not be classed as illegal because they are the apparently the "legitimate" army of their state. But the fact remains that they are worse than terrorists.

  • In what way are they worse than terrorists, how could that ever be seen as being 'fact'? Surely it's easier to hold the British Army accountable for their actions than the paramilitaries which operate without their face on show. If you look at the statistics, in Northern Ireland the IRA killed more people than any other paramilitary force or the British Army, so by what yardstick do you use when measuring the severity of 'terrorists'?

  • @PulpxFairy

With regards to the number of people killed.

You fail to note that the IRA (and also the INLA) were the only organisations who killed an overwhelming majority of combatants.

The majority of those killed by the British Army, RUC, UVF, UDA, RIRA, LVF etc were civilians

  • You present that information to make it look as though the British Army had killed more civilians than Republican paramilitaries, (please excuse my leaving out of Loyalist paramilitaries, as in my original message i denounced both Republican and Loyalist paramiliaties, so feel no obligation to defend them). Regardless of how many combatants were killed, Republican paramilitaries still killed more civilians than the British Army. (Sorry, i meant to say republican in my previous message, not IRA).

  • @PulpxFairy

That's completley untrue, the Stevens Inquiry proved it and there are a number of investigations ongoing. Have a look at "British State Collusion" on youtube - it's a Panorama documentary based on the Stevens Inquiry.

  • Yeah, i've looked into the Stevens Inquiry before, thanks for the suggestion though. I've began to watch the Panorama documentary about it tonight, however as far as im aware it is in several parts, so it might take a while to get into an entire evaluation of it.

  • Ps, It's just a report though, and not an actual full public inquiry, so some of the evidence given cannot be verified as being 100% reliable. The whole sentiment throughout my messages however was denounce those who had supported paramilitary groups on the messageboard for this video link. I would argue against anyone who supported the IRA, as sometimes they killed innocent civilians, just as i'd argue against the UDA, UVF etc.

  • fuck the british army for what they put our people through. we will NEVER forget. god bless the I R A.

  • Sick really, considering the number of people they've killed, from both sides. They love their fellow catholics so much and then blow them up, so what are they fighting for? Freedom, or just a chance for a bunch of thugs to cause some trouble and claim to have a cause?

  • Ahh..yer such a happy bunch, to be sure.....Irish eyes are smilin....WHAT a load of SHITE !!!

  • british murdering bastards

  • @NathanBoBathan1

hahahahaha Incconet hahahahaha Blown up in front of his family hahahahaha Jerry Adams

  • @Ducksexbody

Look at his youtube page, has videos of him.

Judging by the size of him, he probably never left that computer chair

  • build a bridge and get over it you sad twisted twat, you go on about catholics look at how many children were raped by protestants you thick bigot ? why the caps you scare no fucker, retard

  • you fat fucker suit you better to get out more you greedy cunt,

  • hahahahahahaha well said buddy fukin prods are only scared of the catholics anyway.thats why they discriminated us,beat us ,shot our innocent people, starved us and tried to hut us up its all good in the hood of bogside and falls road lol

  • Really? If Catholics are so intimidating why did they allow themselves to become second class citizens in comparison with Protestants? (In terms of rights).

  • @PulpxFairy maybe because the gerrymandering the amount of CIVIL RIGHTS marches banned and ambushed maybe you should read up on your historoy ? or is that the part that was censored

  • Thanks for that suggestion, but im well aware of Northern Ireland's history, i come from there and have studied the politics of Northern Ireland at degree level. My point was not, what have the people of Northern Ireland done to ensure that they have equal rights, it is - If they are such a mighty people, why would they be in such a position where they need to ensure they have equal rights?

  • @PulpxFairy

You can't just disregard loyalist paramilitaries. It has since emerged that groups like the UDA and UVF were controlled by British Military Intelligence. As such, them alongside the British Army, UDR and RUC made up the military apparatus of the British State.

  • @MarkyMarkDCU

Yeah i heard about that. Seems to be only the Sinn Fein website or vastly Republican websites which present the information though. Perhaps if there were some well sourced evidence to back that theory up it may be more widely believed.

  • hey man both sides are at it years

its not all the ira's fault but you have to know that the catholics were not protected during the troubles so they fought back

  • @messi19ire FUCKING IDIOT THEY STARTED IT ,THEN ASKED FOR THE BRITISH SOLDIERS TO COME AN PROTECT THEM ,FIRST SHOT WAS FIRED FROM A CATHOLIC CHURCH ON THE FALLS RD AND IT WASNT AN ORANGE MAN THAT WAS IN THERE

  • @messi19ire It was the Catholics who started the Troubles at the Battle of the Bogside.

  • @rapartist43 your a idiot seeing as discrimination and the battle of the bogside was 1969 the uvf killed the first catholics in 1966 so they started the sectarian war learn something before u talk shit

  • @djleesus09 You're the idiot! 2 months prior to that the IRA bombed Nelson's Pillar in Dublin. UVF feared a rise of republican paramilitarism - this makes sense after all, doesn't it? On 28th of June, NI declared the UVF illegal. The Battle Of The Bogside marked the beginning of The Troubles. And YES, the Brits also fought the UVF. While each side fought for self-determination and oppression of the others, the Brits tried to keep up law and order, arresting republicans and loyalists alike.

  • @rapartist43 Can you show me evidence about the last you wrote in this comment? The one saying that the Brits where arresting loyalists as well? Yes the Catholics welcomed the brits at first but then the brits showed why they really came to the North. And by the way. What did Nelson do for the Irish? I can´t see any sence at all why the UVF have behaved like they have. It´s called secterianism and it´s from the Protestant side of it all.

  • yeooo ya fat wee fucker.. it would take some explosives to blow u up, size of your head T A L

  • @NathanBoBathan1

I'M LOVING THE CAPS THERE, BUDDY.

YOUR COMMENT WAS BRILLIANT, I REALLY ENJOYED IT, IT MADE A LOT OF SENSE AND WAS EXTREMELY COHERENT.

I'M EAGERLY ANTICIPATING YOUR NEXT COMMENT, I HOPE IT WILL BE AS GOOD AS YOUR OTHERS.

    - YOUR FAN, C-FIZZLE.

    P.S. YOU SUCK MAJOR SHAFT.

  • The brits are scumbags, the worst always came from them

  • there are no winners in war, only death

  • this war in ireland is for the indenpdence for our nation from the british, its not the same as going to war in afganistan for gas and invading iraq for oil. So there are those wars that are justified and those that are not. TIOCFAIDH AR LA.

  • How prophetic were the words of the woman that spoke from 1935 to 21.05: what she said from 20.45 onwards was heartbreaking for all of us that were the younger generation she spoke of. And the man who spoke after her spoke a lot of sense, too. Wonder who they were and are they still with us?

  • Got it in one, the Paisley influence. He is the one who was to blame for the troubles lasting so long. Both sides said as much in these interviews."Its the extremist element."

  • great video...btw at 20.45 does the women on the left behind the lady speaking not look like susan boyle from britans got talent lol

  • Prolly is her when she was a little younger...

  • Catholics are the much fairer of the people and that is clear to see in this vid,no bitterness, yet the loyalists spit hatred from every pore...

    UNITED IRELAND

  • See if your aul fella said "Don't ya know?" one more time...... lol

  • I smell troll. :3

  • great video, thanks

  • Incredible. The single best video about the troubles on Youtube.

Oh God...the woman's words at around 20:45. I wish we could all go back and time and take her words to heart. What a wise and brave woman. Heartbreaking.

  • @superhunkdougal

I intended to leave a comment regarding the above vid...However after viewing your channel you are probably pre occupied at this moment in time with a box of Tissues or on "rule 43"...

  • @superhunkdougal Entirely agree. Her cracked and tired voice should be mandatory listening for all those who proudly push us-vs-them identity politics, whether it be Prods and their parades and abuse of Holy Cross schoolchildren or Republicans who think the GFA is invalid and the six counties are 'occupied' despite their people's democratic consent to be so. Until people realise the UNIVERSAL human cost and not just their own, NI will always be a tinderbox.

  • ten times my people rose and fought they fought with pike and gun, ten times ive seen them beaten down . then the provos came and won

  • provos won fuck all. They lost and buried there guns in cement and now the brits have them were they want them not fighting them but taking part in there british instutions as british ministers calling fellow republicans taritors. The british won.

  • the british won fuck all

  • britian and the p.i.r.a engaged in a war over the north. The provos failed in all there objectives while the brits put them out of business made there leaders accept british rule and par take in it and keep the norths union with Britain and its now stronger than it has every been. They clearly won. Until you see that they will keep on winning.

  • hello duck, please be a bit more indepth, al this is crap.

  • I dont get it.......

  • dont get what?
