  • @Rockord79 The reason is because the VHS has the original sound mix from the movie, which won a Golden Globe. On the DVD, from what I understand, you should have a choice between 2 soundtracks: the vastly superior original, or the cheap knockoff remix. I call it a knockoff because I lose track of how many stock sound sound effects they used.

  • The truck driver's racing-line technique at 3:00 to 3:03...simply class =D

  • In my DVD, i was able to change the soundtrack back to the original version. maybe it has something to do with the region you are in?

  • Hurrah! This clip has the original soundtrack. Not the other clips where they dubbed in new sound effects.

  • The Plymouth Valiant run very fast. Peterbuilt is a monster truck. This psycho thriller of Speilberg is a fantastci movie. This is one of my favourites scenes. Thank U very much.

  • I notice the occasional dweeb here who disses this movie, but they have no concept of life without cell phones and Blackberries, nor anything other than today's CGI nonsense where action scenes and car chases look like you're watching a video game. These are real chases in real cars/trucks with real drivers, and not this, the craftsmanship, the storytelling, the acting, the tension and suspense, is close to being equaled in today's generic, over the top lame crap.

    This flick is a classic!

  • Great movie =D

    Thanks for sharing.

  • It's fantastic movie. You can see that truck-man drives truck 85mph...nice...

  • No doubt in my mind that a post WWII-1970 Autocar could do 85 +

  • The most funniest thing in my life...i saw Mack Skyliner in Europe running about ~95-100mph without cargo..and left most cars behind self.

  • even more 85++

  • Spielberg's master movie of 1971. psycho thriller at it's best. Better than the junk he made later. I'm going to buy the VHS version also, to see if this is even better with this different soundtrack.

  • The VHS version is miles better than the DVD. Much more atmosphere. Why the DVD has changed the soundtrack i'll never know.

  • Anyone notice the difference in the sounds from the original VHS release to the DVD? I actually prefer the sound from the VHS, the truck sounds more menacing I think.

rule one: don't mess with mister peterbuilt

    rule two: see rule one

  • this film makes me laughhh!

  • The Plymouth sounds like it had a slant six at times and a V-8 at other times in the film. The old '55 Pete was geared for speed and probably had a 903 Cummins in it, which was badass.

  • My guess is he had a 318 motor with a 2bbl carb. With an A904 automatic transmission. It was built and tuned for government economical restrictions at the time.

  • Why would you guess a 318 and not a slant six? And shit. My '74 /6 Duster is good for 100+ without any real effort. My guess is that his difficulty outrunning that truck is all movie magic.

Actually, since that car is pretty decked out option wise (remote rear view, chrome molding on the doors and drip rails, fancier hubcaps) it may well have been a 318. Either way, I'm still calling movie magic, no question.

  • A friend of mine had a new '73 Valiant with a slant 6. Fuel mileage wasn't that great, but it was the gov't-mandated anti-pollution controls (that the carmakers themselves had to pay for, thank you) that were responsible for that. Anyway, the car itself was wonderful to ride in and drive, well finished, nicely trimmed, a very comfortable car with good road manners and excellent visibility. Pleasant, crisp styling, just a nice car.

  • @mee101022

I agree with what your saying about movie magic. There are some movies out there that require some suspension of disbelief.

On the other side of the coin, that road had some pretty good turns in it. If you were in that situation, and didn't know the roads well, would you want to push your car that fast?

  • that speedometer wouldve been history if he was chasing me!

  • i want that truck

  • Has anyone noticed the odometer is turning backwards ? At 57 seconds into this clip, you can see it is running in reverse.

  • Running in reverse huh? Must be Christne's sissy sister, or borther, which ever sex Dave's car is, if cars have a certain gender that is!

  • i dont get why the man doesnt go as fast as he can on the straights.

  • Bcuz hes afriad he'll crash!

  • His car is rather underpowered. It can only outrun the truck going uphill.

  • Yep, should have gotten the mustang.
