the ink does dry flat a bit. Its glossy because its still wet. The ink layer is not super heavy, its the textured plate which gives the surface the Velvet feel...
Excellent video! I saw one of these prints at Alan Cristea's today, and I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. It's amazing to see how they were made :)
@leanlois Glad you got to see the print in person, if you are ever in West hollywood stop by Gemini, we can show you around. i am always printing some kind of Serra image.
@jordesign yes, these are the plates used to edition this print. Serra made a rubbing from the side of our building which has a sprayed stucco texture. The rubbing was done with paintick on a frosted mylar. This texture drawing was then used to expose the sheet s of copper which we coated with "Z-Acryl" a light sensitive film. After exposing the light sensitive copper, it was developed and etched in a large bath of ferric chloride. Afterwards we ink and pull a print!
@jordesign yes, these are the original plates. Once the edition is printed the plates will be cancelled (defaced), then a proof will be pulled and signed by Serra to document the end of the edition. The plate will them be cut up and recycled. The NationalGallery in DC has show interest in keeping the plates intact to shw but nothing has come from it yet.
totally distraught at the fact I could not use the song, My work wanted to use the video so I just gave up on the concept. I hate the music that was attache to it. The video was never ment to be anything other than just little shorts put together along with a cool track called "lost in the cold sun" by "Earthless"! Why do I care, no freaking idea except I looked your band up and it is the type of music that makes me good!
My intention was to show the mechanical process, using an psychodelic music to balance the lack of much content in the video capture from my Iphone. YouTube would not allow me to use the music from a favorite band, "Earthless" , from which I chose the song that comlimented each scene! I edited the video to match the song, just to be total
mccabbq. I am sorry it is dissapointing! I am not very keen with the concept of making videos to upload to YouTube, The result was not my intention and not sure at this point it is worth changing or fixing.
I wanted music by, "Earthless" youtube would not allow it! I gave up and gave it to someone else to choose the music cause I could not figure out how to do it! Am I going to live with this bullshit for the rest of my life? Dudes, I am a printmaker, I make prints and not videos! I got a fucking Iphone and decided to post something somewhat interesting and fun! How the hell do I change this? You lost the last fucking minute of your life watching it? Then fuck you!

Fantastic video and beautiful print! How did the print stay so glossy? I would have thought the paper would have soaked the ink up?

I liked it.... I would also be interested in how the copper plate was made. Is that RS's actual copper original?
