I think she tried to kill herself after realizing all the terrible things she'd done to all those she cared about, but because she had Jenova cells inside of her from when she was pregnant with Sephiroth, she couldn't die. So instead, she secluded herself from the world and sealed herself inside of a Mako crystal.
