  • A truly masterpiece ♥ Did see it live not so long ago with Mark Bennett as a conducter and with Scoula Cantorum in Norway and I was in tears leavin, cus it's Handel at his best!!

  • This is very beautiful

  • Bravo.. A true masterpiece ♥

  • Gorgeous...

  • My favourite piece from this oratorio! Divine!

  • I get shivers up and down my spine every time I listen to this. Beautiful!!!!

  • I don't see how how the so-called misplaced accent spoiled the rendition. It was masterful, and one must not forget that what we must deal with is an English rendering of what was originally not English. One could of course wish that Sir Colin exhibited more spirit and elan, but that, I think, is a matter of style. He produced wonderful responses from the choir and the orchestra with a minimum of paroxysm.

  • @ranhilio it was written in english actually...

  • @abrockma36 an english translation from the original hebrew

  • @abrockma36 the original text is taken from Isaiah 9:6 in the Bible, a prophecy of Jesus' birth 100s of years before the actual event in the Roman province of Judaea during the reign of Ceasar Augustus, describing God's plan to redeem fallen & separated man by preparing a body for the 2nd person of the Trinity, the Son, in order to lead a perfect life of obedience, die on the cross & be an object of belief for us so that if we believe our spirits are made alive unto Him, to be w/ Him forever.

  • Música maravilhosa.....uma extraordinária execução !

  • Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:

I think Sir Colin Davis looks so relaxed and rested in this recording. Bless his heart.

However, the performance is rather unmusical.

The sophomoric accent or stress on the word "us" ruins the performance.

This is one of the cardinal rules one can never break when performing this song.

Yet, Sir Colin has ignored it.

    Perhaps he was too relaxed.

I am always in favour of rest and relaxation. But not at the expense of the music.

    Have a Dovely.

    Caleb Boone.

  • Everytime I hear this, I get chills in my body. Love the message and what it means to the world.

  • I'm no Christian. I'm actually an Atheist. However, I've seen Handel's Messiah three times personally. His beautiful melismatic choruses and songs, the upbeat and beautiful orchestral music, and the homophonic choral work and nearly perfect balance of the different voice ranges and orchestral ranges is a phenomenal thing to behold. It also displays a beautiful Counterpoint relationship, and a harmony that never fails to give me chills. Were I not a realist, I'd say that Handel had truly seen God

  • @SolidOne40 not to be weird, but it seems like he was filled with the spirit enough to write this awesomeness and ya, the harmonies, the strings filling in, it's just this swirl of beautiful euphonies. You pointed out all the different layers and pieces to this song that I didn't even know were there! How did u know??

  • @geekify321boom Because one who appreciated all forms of music must learn how it's layered and built. The one thing I like most about this is the melisma on the word "born". I looked it up, and apparently it's 57 different notes on one syllable. It's truly a beautiful piece.

  • @SolidOne40 whoa! 57? that's pretty crazy and you're absolutely right; the vocal ranges that these singers posses manifests itself so clearly as they crescendo to higher notes and they begin to form complex harmonies and melodies as the singers interweave with each other :). It's amazing, I gotta go, but I'll listen again to the places you told me to when I get home :)

  • Comment removed

  • @geekify321boom I also enjoy how they have every vocal range sing in an imitation of the chorus. Also, I enjoy the fugue during the counterpoint before the chorus, you should listen for it. It's a song with very heavy emphasis on the relationships between the vocal ranges. Also, the singers all have a great tessiture with their voices, able to reach very distinct ranges. Quite a talented choral group.

  • i love handell

  • Their orchestra is set up different than in my school's hmmm.... I think they set it up like a quartet? with the cellos in the middle.

  • AWESOME! ♥

  • 1:20. Chills...every time...

  • Love.

  • Oh, lovely. A little slow for my taste, but it makes up for it in the perfect clarity of the runs -- they just shimmer!! And I loved the smiles from the first group of singers. They look so happy. (And who wouldn't be, singing this?)

  • vivement demain

  • It is really amazing how organized it is and how it is all perfectly timed!!! It must have taken many hours of practice!!!

  • So pretty!!!!!

  • Well done!

  • Perfection -- both the music AND the performance!

  • Wonderful to hear/see this on Youtube 45 years after hearing Sir Colin's groundbreaking recording for the first time. I had weeks before bought the then newly released Klemperer recording. After hearing Davis' version, I threw away the Klemperer. Hearing the Davis version literally changed my life.

  • Our choir will be performing this piece this Sunday. I can't wait!

  • It never fails to bring tears to my eyes and joy in my heart...irrefutatbly one of the most beautiful pieces of music EVER written...thank you so much for posting!

  • Thank Stef for this link... awesome.

  • my high school, the choir that im in is doing this piece. thumbs up if you want a recording after aour first performance?(:

  • Meus amigos, esta é uma grande canção, que remete a profundas reflexões.

    Parabéns pela postagem!!!

  • It's very good .

  • The first thing I noticed is that the conductor seems to be off beat...

  • Who goes onto classical music and then dislikes it?

  • Beautiful

  • At around 4:02 was Davis singing to himself?

  • We did the entire messiah, this was my favorite part to sing. So happy. :)

  • Notice the girl in the right corner at min 0:20 - 0:30. She seems to be flirting with somebody! HAHAHAHA!! XD So funny

  • Yes I agree; sexy as hell.

  • Through the centuries, for ever ! Parabéns do Brasil.

  • this is so called "MUSIC"!

  • love this song

    i love this version

  • I've been listening to several videos from the Messiah. It makes remember the years when I performed with a community/military choir doing the Messiah at Christmas. I really miss choral singing

  • I've been listening to several videos from the Messiah. It makes remember the years when I performed with a community/military choir doing the Messiah at Christmas. I really miss choral sigiing

  • whats a retornello? is that when the guys sing and then the girls sing the same thing a little after?

  • counter tenors?!?! yuck

  • Praise be to god for this wonderful group of singers and singing

  • so i wanted to watch this video again after some time, and it turns out it's been 'banned' by GEMA in germany... why Lso, why?!

  • @blutfrosch no idea sorry! What's GEMA?

  • @Lso the message i get: "Unfortunately, this video is not available in Germany because it may contain music for which GEMA has not granted the respective music rights." -- well, GEMA is a real party pooper, that's what it is... (Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte (GEMA) (Society for musical performing and mechanical reproduction rights)), virtually GEMA is to germany what DMCA is to the united states... :'(

  • @blutfrosch ah! Hmm. We are in the middle of some rights negotiations with various parties regarding the use of this video; perhaps this is the reason. Hopefully only temporary. You can get the whole thing on DVD from lso.co.uk along with the CD recording. Will post to Germany!

  • @Lso glad to read that :D

  • DULL

  • Absoulety Fabulous !!!!

  • This is a tremendous performance and incredibly light where it needs to be so :)

  • The soprano part sings 57 notes over one syllable - "born" >.<

  • Oh guys, What a great performance.

  • This is what it is supposed to sound like!

  • @artsavant this is about Handel's love of God. It was in his soul.....when he was writing the chorus his assistant was knocking on his door and got no answer - he became concerned and entered. He found Handel with tears in his eyes saying he saw the face of God while he was writing the chorus. You are spam @artsavant but I forgive you.

  • @tman4u2 yes, it was truly in my spirit I believe blessed.

  • How do people become so perverted to make such stupid comments about the lyrics? Wow, just no life at all...

  • Am deeply in love with the handles works. How can i get copies of this clear video. oyengo@yahoo.com

  • @oyengojohn we have the whole performance on DVD, which you get for free when you buy the CD from us! Can't post a link, but go to lso.co.uk, then to the section called LSO Live and search for Handel in the drop down list.

  • @oyengojohn Are you talking about the handles of your bike?

  • Blown away! I love this song I did it in high school. One of my top favorites

  • ive never really been into choir type music but i really do appreciate there talent

  • The soprano third from left, back row, long hair, priceless expressions! Who is she? I'd fly to London from the US to have lunch with her!

  • Es mi favorito de Handel. Espectacular hermoso, lo maximo......

  • For unto us a child is born...amen... I am assured by this song... how wonderful

  • Best of all Messiah and Haendel's absolute best :D

  • Sublime and magnificent

  • @mozartsmusicblog Perfect comment, thank you!

  • Handel. The expression of glory to God.

  • Handel. The glory of music.

  • This is a fine choir. The alto section is incredible!

  • @Oaktownrob Especially with the inclusion of countertenors!

  • Glory to God almighty!

  • Great sounding choir for all parts; however, the bases are ringing.

  • Muito bom. Me fez lembrar os tempos de Canarinhos de Petrópolis...

  • I love looking at the Tenors there faces crack me up!!

I know, I know, it's what the must do... It doesn't stop it from being comical!

  • Gloria a te Signore!

  • Amazing peformance!

    0:22 to 0:29 - the girl in the right top corner...adorable! :)

  • @SZJSL65 The girls are all damn cute.Notice how they smile as they sing. They are getting a buzz out of being there thats for sure.

  • This, 2010, seems to have been the year of the messiah sing along, any reason for that? when was it premiered?

  • The baritones are insane. :O

  • What? Why are there 14 dislikes??? Who doesn't like this??? Those 14 should be shawt. lawlz, jk.

  • So beautiful! Amen. And, thank you. Merry Christmas every day!

  • Finally, a recording that properly gives the bass strings their proper place... It is the foundation for the whole piece, and usually they're almost not heard, drowned out...

  • Perfect

  • thank you ,,Merry Christmas!,,

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JESUS!!!

    Merry Christmas!!

  • Beauty to an ear .

  • Who is the first violinist sitting next to Maxine?

  • Love, love, LOVE this version! Great tempo, great diction, great director. Perfect.

  • @MusicDivaK I agree and totally MAGNIFICENT!!! Wished I could have been singing with them.

  • Goldilocks thinks this is just about right; not too slow, not too fast, the right number of people performing it. All too often the uninformed think that you need 150 people in the orchestra and 400+ in the choir, when Handel scored it for a much small contingent. ...And to think George wrote the whole thing in less than three weeks!! ...With tears staining the original score!!! Inspired!!!!

May you be inspired in whatever you believe! Aaaaaahhh, this glorious life!

  • Einfach wunderbar

  • 1.56 i like that part... God bless you London symphony orchestra and choir...amazing!

  • Beautiful and fantastic music!

  • Do I recall an earlier LSO-Sir Colin Davis recording? Maybe mid to late 70s? We used to listen to that in college. At any rate, I've always appreciated his interpretation and especially his tempos.

  • Merry Christmas from Italy....thank you so much for sharing...

  • @IOVANNIG Buon Natale!

  • And his name is Jesus .Oh Father i have sinned ,am I the saviour or am I to die for the sake of the miserable humans. He rises on the 3rd day.

  • A lovely performance.

  • An excellent performance!

  • @CanadaPisces many thanks for sharing & Merry Christmas

  • @CanadaPisces Thank you so much for sharing! all the best in 2011!

  • I love the way Sir Colin is singing along!

  • Simply wonderful.

  • Sublime, divine !!!

  • Thank you for sharing. Added to favourites with Love & Appreciation:)

  • As a violinist and vocalist, I played all of Handel's Messiah last Christmas, but this Christmas the orchestra and choir did an arrangement of Handel's "For Unto Us A Child Is Born" by Heather Sorenson out of a celebration series and it sounded great, she picked up the beat and swung the rhythms slightly, it was with full orchestra and SATB voicing.

  • (silence)

  • the tenors sound AMAZING!

  • In the first 30 seconds, the girls are joking with the camera ;-) especially the girl 2nd row/right cannot really refrain from laughing!

All in all a outstanding performance of Handel's Messiah!

  • @PILOTCUTT Perhaps the conductor is the one who is joking with them. :-) If you look closely the two girls on the left also make a big smile when they get to "unto us" the third time (0:26). And they weren't smiling before that.

  • All praise and glory be to the one who inspired this masterpiece and gave the talent that Handel and all these amazing performers have - our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  • I am really not religious at all but Handel's Messiah is some of the most beautiful music in the world and reminds me of the possibility that there is a God. For how could a human being be so inspired with out some supernatural touch? I wish I could meet George Handel.

  • @Ricine I believe that is the very point of the music!!! He was indeed inspired by his creator!! Merry Christmas to you and God Bless!!!!

  • @Ricine Dear Ricine, YES there is one true God. He is brilliant and motivated by love so much that He sent Himself to live among us, teach and heal, experience rejection and die a most brutal death. The sins of all mankind were put on Him instead of us. It wasn't done to give you religion. Christianity is the only "religion" that isn't about man searching for God. God searched for you. He wants a relationship with you. I pray that you find some quiet time to sincerely ask Him if He is Truth.

  • @seriouslynow22 No doubt Christianity has a good libretto.

  • 0.18 - 0.29 -- Upper right singer appears to have found someone important in the audience, lover maybe? ;)

  • I have just spent the last 4 minutes and 13 seconds in heaven! I think I'll go back and do it again.

  • @suprunnr Agreed

  • Simply a beautiful rendition of Handel. I can easily pick out, audibly, the counter tenors. All great voices!!!

  • will never lose its relevance, moves me to tears.

  • @britbajan5496 I agree!!!

  • What a perfect performance!

Thank you LSO for uploading these videos. Good reason to buy your CDs and not those of e.g. BPO who never upload complete pieces.

  • who is the conductor? He is great....cool calm..in total control

  • @caxido that's Sir Colin Davis, the LSO President. He was previously our Principal Conductor for 11 years.

  • @Lso thanks forthe reply..The transition(s) @ 2:12 -2:45 are just incredible!

  • @Lso The same happened when I searched Jenkins' Palladio, only I got Justin Bieber... it was a sad moment between me and the internet.

  • @caxido agree, sounds very calm and with ease.

  • @caxido Sir Colin Davis. Britain's greatest living conductor.

  • Finally people who sing/play at the right tempo! I was watching a bunch of variations of "for unto us a child is born" and most of them are all way too fast! this one is a little under tempo but other than that great!

  • I have wrestled with the supernatural and historical fact that is the Good Book. How to resolve this? Either Jesus was who he said he was - or was the greatest liar ever. All he had to do was tell Pilate, when he was asked, he was not the Son of God. He would not. A liar would have gladly done so to save himself. So, Jesus is my Lord and Savior - and listening to this, Handel's, too! I love this music!

  • @TMHackett Amen.

  • @TMHackett have you tried egomania?

  • @TMHackett

Go spam someplace else. This is about a musical masterpiece, regardless the source of the text.

  • BRILLIANT

  • super video schnüffel gibts den keinen hier der mit mir chatten mag bin so gelangweilt

  • Beautiful. Also, some of the boys in the male choir are very hot.

  • I like this very, very much

  • I love this

  • i wish the mics for recording were just a little louder, violinists are very skilled

  • heavenly beautiful

  • I love this. I especially like that the conductor appears to be singing along with the choir. Wonderful

  • @leiwea they're all supposed to do that

  • Stunning.. Brought tears to my eyes. The Mighty God has blessed you brilliant singers and musicians.

  • Oh Now it's Christmas! I LOVE the Messiah! This is my Song... My mom (as well as mu uncle & grandmom) sang in the Messiah for Years. Well in 1972 they said she couldn't sing because she was already over due & they thought she'd hit the Hallelujah note & deliver-lol I was a week late. Mom & my grandmom gets teary eyed when they sing or hear that song
