The drummer for the Nashville Teens in this live performance is indeed, Barry Jenkins, who joined The Animals after original drummer John steel left in 1966.
I grew up in East Central Georgia near Augusta, and we had the original Tobacco Road, that was written about and a movie made about it by Erskine Caldwell I think. It used to be a two lane blacktop and before that just a dirt road where sharcroppers grew tobacco. Now it is all developed and built up you wouldn't recognize it anymore! Also Tobacco Road had a prison out there, some of the song could be referring to the prison. Not sure who wrote it!
This is one of the songs from the 60's that sounds every bit as good today as it sounded the day I first heard it in 1964. Very few bands rocked this hard then. Great performances all around: thumping, driving bass & drums, nasty guitar sound, wonderfully bluesy piano work, and great vocals. This is a smokin' hot version of "Tobacco Road"...THE definitive version. The Nashville Teens kicked ass on this one. Thanks, guys.
The Nashville Teens were one of the top 3 groups from the British Invasion and Ray Philips (the shorter of the 2 singers) still performs with a new line-up. One of the BEST singing voices I have ever heard. Check out Little Bird with Ray Philiips & Zalatnay Sarolta and his version of House Of the Rising Sun (British Invasion Allstars)
This song is very East End
