Use lighter fluid like you use in zippo lighters to clean out the sliders. you can unsolder, unfold and wipe the carbon tracks safely in the sliders with that, then lube with Faderlube, reassemble and resolder them. Takes a few hours if you can do such things. I have done.
gahaha, love the choice of words. by "fag" you mean "cigarette"? yes?
if so.. it actually recommends in the service manual, that one smoke whilst performing any/all service work. that;s the original service manual though.. from like '81.
Holding a blade between your fingers, you could easily cut yourself. A scalpel would be a lot safer and more precise. You can get one in a graphic design shop.
absolutely. if you hadn't already noticed, the first and foremost thing mentioned in the mg-1 service manual, is that you always smoke and/or ash your cigarette all over the mg-1 PCB*.
*that was a joke, obviously. don't smoke. it is expensive.
I am about to sell mine on e-bay and have never taken the cover of in around 25 years since i first purchased it. But a bit of compressed air and gentle cleaning and she looks good. Gonna miss her...............
The MG1 works perfectly and I will be making a short demo to aid the sale of this classic synth.
Hey thanks for the comment. Yup I manage to get my D50 fix, apparently the D/A and some other chips have to be replaced. The technician did a great job and have got rid the unwanted noise.
THANKS. i just strip open my roland d50 to clean too. apparently i still havent find what was the cause that makes the strange electric "ticking" noise at random time during output.
with most of these older syntheseizers, if the sliders and pots can't be thoroughly cleaned, to remove any residual movements (that may cause clicking/noise) your best bet would be to just replace the sliders or pots.
sorry for the delayed response. i know for the mg-1 you can get a complete replacement kit for the sliders. that said, i'm sure you can get replacement parts for a real piece of hardware (haha to the mg-1) kukje the d50.
i really need/want to fix my MG1.... sigh..

Great, so I just went through this two minutes ago, and now I'm watching some other poor dude go through it. Screw black tar foam.

Having a fag over electronic equipment, is that such a good idea? Nevertheless, thanks for posting, looks like you did a great reno job!

I'm doing the exact same thing but servicing a Moog Taurus II -- gooey foam central. Gotta love the beauty of decay and what fun it can bring.

Is it that wise to be holding a cigarette while you are doing that?
