They deregulated and opened up a cesspool of bad mortgages - bundled them and sold them to investors knowing the mortgages were bad, unlikely to be paid and they made billions in the process. The subprime mortgages were a result of politicians like mccain that voted for less regulation and you better believe there were many, many politicians that reaped the rewards.
