im really glad to see everyone commenting on this video being very mature and intelligent with their conversation. it's refreshing to see since 90 percent of videos on youtube are ruined with all the banter that goes on below.

overall, I feel devine uses similar vocal recording techniques as Smith, not to say his voice is similar (and this doesnt count for live vids). This guitar line doesnt start to sound very Elliott like till like 1:40, where he starts to throw the fills in.

See, I think the whole thing is reminiscent of Elliott. A lot of his songs were pretty simple but sounded a lot more complicated because of the way he flicked out his fingers, favoring the bottom strings, but slapping a bass-type riff here and there on the top strings. Which is what I see going on in this song. The way Devine hums out the bridge or whatever you'd call it. The chords he's using. The fact that he used the phrase "Southern belle" which is in a few songs of Smith's.

haha, yeah, I know what you mean. Elliott is by far one of y favorite artists. I've just recently begun to get into devine. Like I said, he definitely started to channel smith a bit when he began to fill out his chord progression, and while the chords who used were definitely Smith like, he just doesnt really get to smith level until 1:40ish.

I really meant at like 1:25 now that I listen to it again. I love this song to be honest. If anything, we can compare him to elliott, in the fact that his music is designed to illicit the same depth of emotional response.

The strum pattern of this is a little bit similar to No Name #4, although the rest of the songs kind of differ.... I cant pinpoint exactly which song this reminds me of.

Elliott is a clear influence of his, and he even covers a lot of his stuff live. I caught the Southern Belle part too, not sure if it was a reference though, I know a few songs that use the phrase.

I'm an avid Elliott Smith fan though, so that's probably why it was so apparent to me. I'm not really particularly into Kevin Devine, just this song and You're Trailing Yourself. So i might be biased anyways.
