  • did you now there is a kid from belgium and his name is also Ian Thomas.

He is a boy with much talent.

    search for: Ian Thomas Autograph.

    He has differents songs.

Buth i have to say that this song is good.

  • extraordinario Ian Thomas....gracias

  • way better than Santana version. Great job Ian

  • IBM ftw

  • Actually this quality-sound version is much better than the other one with a horrible sound and horrible video resolution

  • Thank you for the great memories! I was attempting to find this song in a store years ago.

  • Was that Joe Flaherty at the beginning?

  • @maxman1602

    Yes it was. Good ear!

  • @maxman1602 Hah! That was first thought even before I looked down at the comments postings.

  • I always thought Ian Thomas should have been so much bigger that he was. Criminally underrated. Great singer-songwriter with a very distinctive style.

  • I like Santana's version for his kick-ass guitar work but I prefer Ian's version for his sexy vocals.

  • This is a live mix folks... a fucking live mix. Some seriously tight playing. Awesome!

  • Boy you sure got that right, I was thinking the exact same thing.

I saw them live at Ontario Place; great live show . . . just fantastic.

  • @ThotherBrother this was live on SCTV

  • radiofan6872 you are absolutely right, good call. Peace to you.

  • I was lucky enough to see the Ian Thomas Band when they toured with Max Webster and Rush during Rush,s Farewell to Kings tour. I have been of a fan of Ian Thomas since 1973 when he had the hit Painted Ladies. I,m sorry to tell you emerging2012 but Ian Thomas wrote this song, Santana,s version is a cover and they do a great job but Ian Thomas,s version is the original, Manfred Mann also covered a song of his called The Runner and America covered Right Before Your Eyes. Peace my friend.

  • Great song!

  • I never knew about this guy or this version until now. I was only familiar with Santana. This is every bit as good!

  • Geez people, this is a live recording from around 1981, give or take a little. And not just live but a live recording on a TV show. And a Canadian TV show at that. Think "Saturday Night Live" but on a fraction of the budget ... and whatever dreck outdated gear they must've had there in the SCTV studio. All things considered, this is a darn good performance of the Ian Thomas tune by him and his band. Search the artist and title here on YouTube, and you will be able to see this performance, too.

  • He did this tune at a performance here in town when his brother dave and him were on a music/comedy tour. And he sounded exactly like you hear him here. Very, very cool guy. Had an awesome chat with him after the show. There's nothing like this era of music..NOTHING!

  • Saw Toto, Johnny Cash, Mantecca, Don McLean, Strange Advance, on the rotating stage plus many others. $8.00 got you in to see great bands plus Ontario Place

  • This version might 've been recorded before, but sounds outdated, The Santana version still rocks.

  • Hmmm Santana version VS this one, the first thing I like is that the Satana version is slightly slowed down.. but hearing the original writer sing the chorus how he intended it to sound makes me enjoy that part of this version more...

I dunno it's a toss up between them to me :P I might lean towards the Santana one though

  • he's only quick in this live version..the studio version is the same speed as Santana's..and all due respect to Carlos..that Thomas version is much better than Santana's..Carlos did get it from Ian I hope you realize..have a good one..

  • Anyone remember the free concerts at Ontario Place in the 70's? Saw them there, they were fantastic. Every Thursday night was a different (usually) Canadian band. I was exposed to so much great music and at the time all I thought I was doing was getting high and hanging with friends.

  • I'm STILL waiting for the rap version of this.. maybe the Beastie Boys? =)

  • Awesome song Ian Thomas definately cool!

  • Anyone in KW will remember seeing Ian at the Coronet in Kitchener - greaty times!

Loved that black jump suit he use to wear! Ian you were one Sexy Man!

  • this version is 10x times better than the santana.

  • Ya think? I'm kinda partial to the Santana version. Better production, vocals etc. I can appreciate the "original" angle however. I always loved "Pilot" by Thomas...great tune!!

  • Check the credits on the lyrics/album. Thomas wrote the song.

De gustibus, non disputandum est, but this is the original version.

  • Ian Thomas wrote the song but Santana made the song a hit. No one would have ever heard of this song had Santana not popularized it. I was a senior in HS when this song was out . No Ian Thomas version of this song was on the radio anywhere in the U.S.!It was a Canadian song that reached number 28 on the Canada's RPM 100 - "Records, Promotion, Music". Santana enhanced the song so well that it jumped to number 16 on the U.S. top 40 charts.

  • @emerging2012 Check the other versionfuckstick. It's early 70's, years before Carlos did it. I asked Ian about it when he was in town and he laughs at the fuckups who think it's Santana's song. Santana is great, no doubt, but his version doesn't hold a candle to Ian's. Use the internet for something other than whacking off to bullshit porn, try doing some research.

  • He is great I met him last Night live in Kitimat BC. This guy taught me how to swim in my hometown in Ontario. This is a great song and audio sounds good. Thanks for the memories Ian!!!

  • DO you know if he's married? Cause it doesn't mention it in any of his bios...

  • I don't know if he's married or not. I don't recall him ever mentioning it, and I can no longer find his website to look for an official biography.

  • DAMN IT! It would have been nice if you were still in touch with him. I would have loved to have met him! I have had a crush on Ian since I was a little girl, like we're talking, little. The 70's, and I'm now in my mid 30's....ya! LOL...

I think he is so SEXY!!! Where you from radiofan?

  • I was never in touch with him personally (I wish!) but just saw snippets of him on television and the internet.

I'm from Michigan, myself, and have never seen Ian Thomas in person. He's a great artist though!

  • totally agree!! i got the video of him singing this song from sctv on dvd ! he's awesome!

  • he seems like a cool guy. i bought Dave Thomas' book about SCTV where he revealed that his brother was Ian Thomas. I KNEW there was a version of this song that Santanna hadn't done. and i was right. i especially love the part where he sits with the guys and goes Canadian

  • I love Ian Thomas' stuff..

But I can't find a video version of 'Liars' anywhere.

I'm pretty sure he performed it on SCTV too.

Or maybe not.. Memory has faded after all these years..

    Thanks for uploading this!

  • man this song rules, from den colo, all day, it's gr8!

  • Thanks for posting. Hey, the audio quality's good.

  • Can someone post liars?

  • I've not heard of this song before... do you know what album it was on? I'll see if I can find it.

  • Riders on Dark Horses (1984) Good luck finding it ! I have an old copy on vinyl in storage ....somewhere....lol

  • It was from "The Runner" 1981.

  • You're close, but five years off Debbie. It's from "Calabash" which is my second most favorite of his studios. I'm lucky enough to have all of his releases. Ian's the master forever!

  • Yes, "Liars" is, but I was referring to "Hold On". I too have all his library of music and have met him several times.

That's the last time I saw Ian live as "The Ian Thomas Band" in support of "The Runner" album, 1981

  • These drop down response boxes got me confused, sorry. Must be nice to have met him several times! Once for me in Scarborough only.
