  • you speak very clearly and there are no confusion over what you are doing. excellent tutorial!

  • OMG, one of the best tut on yt!!! Learned so much and saved alot of time!! THANKS

  • How can I see the bones on more complex models? I either want to make the bones visible through the model or make the model slightly transparent. Wireframe doesn't work, there's too many lines and I'd like to be able to see how the parts of the creature are moving.

  • @SupahPaul7 - why not just change the mesh to transparent?

  • @3dcognition Because then I can't see how the bone changes affect the mesh without going back and forth between transparent and opaque. I want to be able to see where the bones are so I can easily select them, but also see the mesh. The bone structure and the mesh is very complex.

  • This is fine but the problem is that you never connect (bone tools) to the parent bone. The result of not using the connect bone feature is that in UDK for example it does not recognize this as a skeletal mesh because in fact it is not it is only a Hiearchy and not a skeleton

  • @licxstar Thanks for the comment - never used UDK (Unreal Development Kit?) but what I've done apparently works fine for the Unity game engine, which is my target. Appreciate the feedback - could save someone some hassle.

  • @SupahPaul7 You always can edit the bones, in command panel, I have the opposite problem always have to resize and disminish the bones. How could be fixed that.

    Good videotutorial.

  • good....thanks friend

  • good....

  • This video was so much help to me. Now, I don't know what settings differ from this to 2012 software, but if I were to make something like this and clone it, would the clone behave properly?

  • Thank you so much for making this! I have to use this and maya in my 3d class, but our teacher talks and moves so fast that taking notes is like scribbling 1 to 3 words at a time. I was so happy t find this video and be able to take better notes.

  • @Raiimoto I know what you mean! More teachers need to learn how to teach (what a concept!). Glad it helped.

  • All - Just found some comments that I had missed, sorry about this. Youtube can be spotty with comment delivery sometimes, and I know it's sometimes my fault - but anyway I appreciate the encouragement. I reply with answers when I have one handy and have the time, thanks for understanding.

  • Coll dude :) I realy learned much from your video. It would be realy helpfull if you could explain what a IK Solver is as i dont understand them much :P

    no mercy

  • Thanks for the kind comments, guys. Hoping to find time to make some more vids over the winter break.

  • Seems some guy stole this tutorial and uploaded a video of him doing it, probably to try to take credit for it, lame. Here: youtube.com/watch?v=oRCrwC5j7pA

  • @petec525 - thanks for the heads-up. Lame is the word. Sad, what little creativity some people have.

  • yeahhh thanks buddy .... this was my 1st try in animation ..... i did it ... :D

  • :D :D :D :D tanks :D

  • how to make a bones controllers (circles)

  • my bones are very big how i make it more small? (my english is bad, sorry)

  • Thanks so much for creating this tutorial! Before this I was using Morph to animate characters which limited me to only a few motions. I was able to use this to create a dancing polar bear.

You can see my video at youtube.com/watch?v=idj7lE6RXJY

  • keys may not be set in figure mode, what does that mean

  • @dranoel1963 - figure mode is something you have when you rig a character using Biped - it does not apply to this tutorial, which is about Bones. But look it up in the help, figure mode is for setting the "before" position of your character so you can rig most effectively.

  • mine says "keys may not be set in figure more" what i do??

  • Hey all, thanks for the kind comments.

BTW to @super, bones should not render, but you should know if you right click any object you can change properties to turn off "Renderable".

  • wtf, where did my X,Y,Z arrows to move objects and subobjects go? how can i fix that?

  • @botukasLT - try pressing "x" or go to customize > preferences > gizmos > and turn transform Gizmos on.

  • @3dcognition thanks :D

  • I have problems with exporting. When I export and import into my project, the animation doesnt show up.

  • Thanks for the comments; @super - yeah if I remember correctly, bones don't render, but even if they do, just right mouse click them > Object Properties and turn off the Render checkbox.

  • Thank you, helps a lot to understand how bones work.

  • the bones dont render with it right?

  • @suparandompersonppl sure bones dosent render !

  • how to remove that white when you smooth?

  • thanks for making this nice & simple ^^

  • thanks so much your really helpfull and u describe everything perfect :D

  • how do i reset the animation ? if i messed up and want to delete it all animation again?

  • @gmodzombieteam try selecting and deleating frame points ( those squaeres in time line)

  • do the bones stick out in the final results?

  • I must say that your tutorial is the most easiest to inderstand, very simple, very precise, very useful. Keep the goodwork! Cheers from México

  • Thanks, this tutorial is brilliant. I knew only basic modelling before I checked this out and I cannot believe how much more I'm able to do after watching your short video. It's so helpful and clear. You don't leave out any necessary step or assume that the viewer "must" know the in-betweens. Thank you so much for making and sharing this. :-D

  • @Estelindis - Thanks for the kind words - sorry it took me so long to reply, sometimes comments just "show up", I'm not sure why I didn't see this before.

  • Thanks a lot. Though, I myself do only small amounts of animation, and am learning more of the modeling aspects, this was very helpful to get me a little bit of a rigging background. :)

  • Great Tutorial! Fast and clean! Thankyou for share it!

  • You sound like the bob ross of 3d animation.... happy trees...

  • When after doing the assignation of verticies to bones, I move the HI solvers, but the mesh still stands as if I did not move the solver.

  • For what its worth, this is the best tutorial by far that I have ever found. Thank You.

  • After rigging something, when i move the bones - the mesh don't move along with it. What did I do wrong?

  • thank you ^_^ very helpful

  • 3:46 lol

  • @Fagush - Thanks for noticing ;)

  • Great Tutorial!

  • Thank you, this was very usefull is this to for 3ds max?:P

  • @scriptingtube - yes this is 3ds Max.

  • hey im having trouble with the HI solver. when i link the bone then others get WAY DISTORTED.????? or just restricts movement completely.??????

  • @aDogNameDude - sorry that's not enough info to suss out what's going on - but make sure you do the tutorial from SCRATCH, okay, and you will probably have no problem.

  • hey im having trouble with the HI solver. when i link the bone then others get WAY DISTORTED.????? any help.

  • thank you!

I am a high school dtudent about to take 3d animation courses, this is going to give me the early advantage toward my classmates!

  • @sam9116 - glad it helped - we need every advantage we can get these days.

  • I have a the bone references in place around my model, how do I assign the bone mesh to match my model in order for the model to take effect?

  • @RadBrad13 - it should all be in the demo - maybe you are referring to the Skin modifier? Line the bones up, apply the skin modifier to the mesh, and pick the bones - after that it is just a matter of assigning each bone to the mesh vertices you want them to have.

  • @3dcognition Yep, the skin modifier was what I was looking for. Thanks a lot!

  • @RadBrad13 - 1. Move the bones into position, 2. assign a skin modifier to the mesh, 3. choose the bones you want to be used in this animation, 4. let the skin modifier know what bones go to what vertices in the mesh.

  • I need help with something :(

  • Very usefull quick tutorial on skinning with bones, even without audio it's doable. :)

Looked this up because I'm new to bones in 3Ds Max. I had to animate a binimi on a big yacht. ;)

  • Excellent tutorial - very helpful --- Thanks

    ^_^

  • help plz....when try 2 create bones they move everywhere..how can i create them straight like yours?

  • I want to attach arms

and legs that are seperate parts, and make them remain

in place on pre-made pivot points but be able to fully rotate

in a 360* area, do you have a video for that?

    I have 3DS-Max 2010

  • how do i get the charecter rollout

  • Thank you so much!! you saved my day! =D

  • but how to save as .avi

  • @dydziooo - first, thanks for uncle, tik, tug, aaron, dem, and Tree for the kind encouragement.

Now, how to save as AVI? You do that in 3ds Max, in your rendering dialogue box, where it says File - choose avi there.

  • I learned more from what you explained here in 10 minutes then i did with this same 45 minute lesson in class. Thanks a bunch!

  • "Really quick and dirty"

    Thats what she said.

    Good tutorial though.

  • great tutorial big help

    i just had one problem

after linked the legs to the body and tried to move all of them, they all moved but they only span in cirlce. the bottom of the body seemed to be stuck on a pivot.

    please help x

  • @AaronHarvey15 - sorry for the late response - I am pretty sure if you go through the tutorial very slowly and carefully you will see where you went wrong - from your description it is hard to tell what you did wrong. If you want to post a video response of how you are doing it I'll be glad to take a look!

  • @3dcognition no problem

i dont know what i did wrong but i managed to fix it and its all working now. thanks

could you do a tutorial on how to render texture and more deatailed colour etc... if you get what i mean :L would be great.

  • I just learned sooo much. I never used the Loft or IK.. or even Union before. I have always hand shaped my skins which can take very long, then cut ends and Connect tool them together.. The IK is most interesting the way you linked the IK points to parent them as you did. Thats just soo helpful. I got frustrated with IK and have always just hand keyed the bones individually.. thanks for this tut!!!

  • such a nice tutorial!!!... easy to understand...!!! thnx

  • cool. i'm new to game design, but with the Unity game engine. this has helped me alot with my animations!

  • Awesome video! Really helped me... But what if I want to make a kind of liquid monster? Do I need to use RealFlow, or can I do it in 3d's Max?

  • @Toca91 - I've never made, or wanted to make a liquid monster and have not used RealFlow. My first advice is to start simple and make some regular monsters before you start getting all abstract. Your idea may be great but it is all too common for beginners to reach for the sky and fail. What you need are some progressive steps that succeed.

But anyway, does anyone else have some advice for Toca?

  • @3dcognition I've never got a detailed comment response like this. Thank you. I'm not really a beginner, well I'm good at modeling and stuff (you can check out 3d videos on my channel), I just wondered about liquid... Again we may not use bones.... I'm so not sure... Thanks again!

  • thanks..bro for this video..

  • Very nice!

    GREAT!

    - - - RENDERING IMAGINATION - - -

  • great tutorial i needed it to my 3d spider, thanks!

  • Great Vid, helped me a lot with small things I was missing :) I'm trying to animate a T-Rex using bones, a little much for a first try, but I have to think BIG! :)

  • Qye has learned teachers for 15 years in it lines and all that that you ,lo learned of you.

Thank you, teachers ,gracias for so much generosity!!

  • thanks ! i am very excited to hear from you when you see my animation :) i will upload it around tuesday i think.

  • wow ! thanks for the great demo. you can see my results soon. will you check it out and give me some tips on my next animation ?

  • wow ! thanks for the great demo. you can see my results soon. will you check it out and give me some tips on my next animation ?

  • @TheArkayProductions - sure, a good way to do this is post your results as a video reply, I'd be glad to tell you what I think would improve it.

  • @3dcognition thanks ! you wil hear from me soon :)

  • @3dcognition tanks ! i will.

should i first do the low poly model. then bones and stuff. and THEN sculpt him in Mudbox. and then animate it. or first low poly, sculpt, bones and stuff and animate ?

  • @TheArkayProductions - I haven't used Mudbox yet, though we have it where I teach, it's just a matter of finding the time. Now you can use the texture map from your high res model on your low res rigged model, it is called a Normal map. Rigging a low poly model is faster and easier but you get the best of both worlds because the texture still looks good. I'm sorry I can't go into detail on that but hopefully can do a demo one day.

  • wow i learned a lot in just 10 minutes. awesome video

one thing tho - HI solver (not to mention all other IK solvers) is grayed out for me and i have no idea why. what did i do wrong / miss?

  • @GraveUypo - not sure, normally buttons are only grayed out when you are in the wrong "mode". Try the demo again, nice and slow...

  • @3dcognition i guess i had some history-dependant bones going on. it's working ok now. ty

  • hi man. thanks for the nice and easy tutorial. I just made my first 3D model and I must animate it. But I dont know how to start it. Can you help me? Just say the topics and I'll go look for them

    The model is here: flickr.com/photos/30642827@N03/

  • @vaynardo - didn't find the image you mention at that url...

  • @3dcognition oh man...is there any way I can send you the image? I really means a lot to me...

    Thank you!

  • I JUST WANNA SAY, YOU ARE AWESOME! The reason why? because finally something straightforward. I was trying to find an easy to the point video about IK, Skinning, and animating, and I lucked out on you sir.

Thank you SO MUCH, for having the time to post this on youtube. THANK YOU!!!

  • @MarioLegend - Thanks, that was my intent, just show exactly how to do it with as little messing around as possible. Appreciate the feedback.

  • I got upto the part adding the skin editble poly, then on my list i had no bones showing up...

  • Great tutorial!

  • Aaaah, I see now. I couldn't animate these particular bones because I only used *one* HI solver for one set of bone limbs rather than two. I have the results I need, although it's not automatically keyframing in the first frame. Thanks.

  • Thanx for the tutorial...

    A great help for beginers...

  • great job...thanks a lot, i have exame tomorow

  • Very useful and well constructed tutorial. Clean, simple to understand and end result works as it should work. My main problem was to skin the character and join bones together and thanks to you for helping me out. Still have to practice using envelopes, though. They look so complex yet.

  • finally!!! A useful tutorial!!! Been looking for this, thanks a lot!!!

  • but how can i add Bones to a finished model ?

  • Amazing

  • Thanks anti, iina, and mr for the kind comments.

  • This is the second time I see this great Tutorial and all I have to say is Thank you very much 3dcognition it really help me a lot in 3d anmation

  • youtube.com/watch?v=NA_nVACxJXs

  • @iinadir - great job taking the tutorial to the real world!

Anyone playing with this tutorial, check out iinadir's link and try creating a scene of your own, delving into your own project will take you further.

  • @3dcognition

    thanks to you :D

  • Thank you very much :D

    great tut

the vertex animation killed me :P

  • awsome tutorial, its the best bones and skinning tutorial ive seen so far

  • Hey All I just found about 15 comments that I have never seen before, now they are approved, sorry for the delay, some of them were several months old but they never showed up until today! I will try and answer some of the questions in the next few weeks, pretty busy right now. Thanks for watching and thanks for all the kind comments.

  • nice tut!

my ik solvers seem to create a line from where they were created every time i move them around, is that normal?

  • Dude, ive seen shitload of tutorials on youtube but yours is one of the (if not THE) BEST one there is, you dont waste time talking bout shit nobory cares, or trying (and failing) to be funny, your showing people exactly what's in description in a way that even a 3d max dummy like me understands how this thing works, and for that i am thankful.

5 stars and instand fav :)

  • @Marobot Thanks man for the good word. Makes me want to get busy making some more tutorials.

  • i cant select loft!? :(

  • VERY helpful. Thank you!

  • Thanks cri and noah for the comments.

  • FINALLY!!!! AWESOME!!! i was pulling out my hair on this one... Thanks

  • Thanks all you guys for the kind comments!!!

  • thanks man best tutorial u make it sound so simple and that makes it easy 4 us

  • Thanks a lot

  • very helpful, thanks :)

  • one of the BEST tutorials about bones !

  • Thank you so much for telling me about skinning!

  • thxx... a lot "3dcognition" ......

and once again thx for good clarity and nice explations.......

  • i'm learning

  • Good tutorial, good tutorial voice =P. Loud and clear, not sleepy or lazy, lol. 5/5

  • Cool thank you really much! There is not alot of video tutorials that good.

  • Five Stars

  • Great, thank you

  • really helpful

  • Thank you its a really helpful tutorial

  • well, i just know about ik solver and bone properly. thanks

  • cool, im new 2 3ds max, and im interested in the games.. but im woundering like what time of game u can great? like.. can you only play them on 3ds max? or can u like burn them 2 a disk and make ps2, ps3, ps1, or like xbox.. or pc games... like what games can u creat? and another question.. i see pepole created really realistic charecters... how do u do that? is it the same way u just did right now? or is that a more complex step? and a diffrent way? or do u just download them or something?...

  • jojojojo loko hace como 2 meses ando buscando un tutorial de estos muchas gracias

  • hi, i really enjoy this tutorial, i always find myself browsing throu my favs for it. Might i ask a question, how do i "save" my bones structure before i start messing with it? I always find myself doing backups because once the skin modifier is applied and i start playing with bones it is really ahrd to go back to the "relaxed" structure.. with relaxed i mean reset, the position my skeleton had in the beginning..so again is there a way to store the original position and to load it later on?

  • Great video man.

    Keep it up.

I'm using Max '09 and i'm not able to see the blue crosses when i apply the Hi solver.

    Please help.

    thank you.

  • Great video man.

    Thank you.

  • Man great video.

    Keep it up.

I am using Max '09 and i am not able to see the blue crosses when i apply the Hi solver.

    Please help.

  • I wonder why I can't use set key when animation bones... How can I do that?

  • Awesome job! Very good! I like how you made the legs.

  • thank you that what i need

  • almost everything is do-able, you just got to be patient, lol great tut

  • Thanks for helping my bird flap

  • At first glance, I thought rigging and animating was a pain in the butt, but you made me see that it's a lot easier than it seems. Thanks :D

I have two questions: Is it possible to copy and mirror the animation from one arm/ leg to the other arm/leg?

How can you apply the same animation to two different characters?

  • thank u sooo much

  • im using 3ds max 10 where to find that child parent tool ? :)

  • i am skinning a head with a lot of bones and i found it very difficult is ther a more accurate way to skin?

  • Hi, I have a question, when I select the bones were also selected objects, how to select the bones could avoid selecting objects?

I do not know much English, so why talk like that.

  • THANK YOU!!!

You helped me a lot! I almost went crazy about those bones before, but now i think that it's actually pretty easy :)

  • I've followed this tutorial and mine's come out a treat. In mine, though, I've done some more animation - I have my capsule spider thing walking, crouching, turning and the like. How would you decrease the amount of deformation/warping on the main body of the "spider" when it turns, walks, or does anything mildly more extreme than lift a leg?

Much appreciated. Thanks for the tutorial =)

  • Hey, does anyone know where can I find 'Character' list? :(

What version of Max is it? It's strange, because I haven't this list.

  • Thanks a million! I have been looking for bone tutorials the whole evening and this one was the best I found, so helpful.

  • Hi i enjoy your vids i was wondering if its possible to use this program to animate what im doing and puting that animation over a video? Thanks.

  • download CamStudio

  • thats called composing , most common program for that is adobe after effects

  • did the render.. it was cool.. but.. it was only black mask of the character, no textures.... o o O (Mental Note, think i need to look at a video tutorial for rendering to video ) lol

  • One thing that's helped me over the years is to create the simplest experiment possible, and then see if the render or whatever works. So for example start an entirely new file, create a sphere, render in the perspective viewport, and see if that works.

  • Hey buddy - May i ask you a question. Once I have the animation done , scenery, characters lighting etc, How do i actually make the whole thing into a movie? i.e. export to an AVI? i can see render and preview thing but no actual movie as such?

Thanks in advance if you can answer this :)

  • You've got to go to the Render menu and look for Render To File - then pick AVI or whatever. Also make sure you are rendering all the frames (at the top of the Render dialog box).
