How can I see the bones on more complex models? I either want to make the bones visible through the model or make the model slightly transparent. Wireframe doesn't work, there's too many lines and I'd like to be able to see how the parts of the creature are moving.
@3dcognition Because then I can't see how the bone changes affect the mesh without going back and forth between transparent and opaque. I want to be able to see where the bones are so I can easily select them, but also see the mesh. The bone structure and the mesh is very complex.
This is fine but the problem is that you never connect (bone tools) to the parent bone. The result of not using the connect bone feature is that in UDK for example it does not recognize this as a skeletal mesh because in fact it is not it is only a Hiearchy and not a skeleton
@licxstar Thanks for the comment - never used UDK (Unreal Development Kit?) but what I've done apparently works fine for the Unity game engine, which is my target. Appreciate the feedback - could save someone some hassle.
@SupahPaul7 You always can edit the bones, in command panel, I have the opposite problem always have to resize and disminish the bones. How could be fixed that.
This video was so much help to me. Now, I don't know what settings differ from this to 2012 software, but if I were to make something like this and clone it, would the clone behave properly?
Thank you so much for making this! I have to use this and maya in my 3d class, but our teacher talks and moves so fast that taking notes is like scribbling 1 to 3 words at a time. I was so happy t find this video and be able to take better notes.

Coll dude :) I realy learned much from your video. It would be realy helpfull if you could explain what a IK Solver is as i dont understand them much :P

Thanks so much for creating this tutorial! Before this I was using Morph to animate characters which limited me to only a few motions. I was able to use this to create a dancing polar bear.

@dranoel1963 - figure mode is something you have when you rig a character using Biped - it does not apply to this tutorial, which is about Bones. But look it up in the help, figure mode is for setting the "before" position of your character so you can rig most effectively.
Thanks for the comments; @super - yeah if I remember correctly, bones don't render, but even if they do, just right mouse click them > Object Properties and turn off the Render checkbox.
Thanks, this tutorial is brilliant. I knew only basic modelling before I checked this out and I cannot believe how much more I'm able to do after watching your short video. It's so helpful and clear. You don't leave out any necessary step or assume that the viewer "must" know the in-betweens. Thank you so much for making and sharing this. :-D
@Estelindis - Thanks for the kind words - sorry it took me so long to reply, sometimes comments just "show up", I'm not sure why I didn't see this before.
Thanks a lot. Though, I myself do only small amounts of animation, and am learning more of the modeling aspects, this was very helpful to get me a little bit of a rigging background. :)
@aDogNameDude - sorry that's not enough info to suss out what's going on - but make sure you do the tutorial from SCRATCH, okay, and you will probably have no problem.
@RadBrad13 - it should all be in the demo - maybe you are referring to the Skin modifier? Line the bones up, apply the skin modifier to the mesh, and pick the bones - after that it is just a matter of assigning each bone to the mesh vertices you want them to have.
@RadBrad13 - 1. Move the bones into position, 2. assign a skin modifier to the mesh, 3. choose the bones you want to be used in this animation, 4. let the skin modifier know what bones go to what vertices in the mesh.
after linked the legs to the body and tried to move all of them, they all moved but they only span in cirlce. the bottom of the body seemed to be stuck on a pivot.
@AaronHarvey15 - sorry for the late response - I am pretty sure if you go through the tutorial very slowly and carefully you will see where you went wrong - from your description it is hard to tell what you did wrong. If you want to post a video response of how you are doing it I'll be glad to take a look!
- after linked the legs to the body and tried to move all of them, they all moved but they only span in cirlce. the bottom of the body seemed to be stuck on a pivot.
I just learned sooo much. I never used the Loft or IK.. or even Union before. I have always hand shaped my skins which can take very long, then cut ends and Connect tool them together.. The IK is most interesting the way you linked the IK points to parent them as you did. Thats just soo helpful. I got frustrated with IK and have always just hand keyed the bones individually.. thanks for this tut!!!
@Toca91 - I've never made, or wanted to make a liquid monster and have not used RealFlow. My first advice is to start simple and make some regular monsters before you start getting all abstract. Your idea may be great but it is all too common for beginners to reach for the sky and fail. What you need are some progressive steps that succeed.
But anyway, does anyone else have some advice for Toca?
@3dcognition I've never got a detailed comment response like this. Thank you. I'm not really a beginner, well I'm good at modeling and stuff (you can check out 3d videos on my channel), I just wondered about liquid... Again we may not use bones.... I'm so not sure... Thanks again!
Great Vid, helped me a lot with small things I was missing :) I'm trying to animate a T-Rex using bones, a little much for a first try, but I have to think BIG! :)
should i first do the low poly model. then bones and stuff. and THEN sculpt him in Mudbox. and then animate it. or first low poly, sculpt, bones and stuff and animate ?
@TheArkayProductions - I haven't used Mudbox yet, though we have it where I teach, it's just a matter of finding the time. Now you can use the texture map from your high res model on your low res rigged model, it is called a Normal map. Rigging a low poly model is faster and easier but you get the best of both worlds because the texture still looks good. I'm sorry I can't go into detail on that but hopefully can do a demo one day.

Hey All I just found about 15 comments that I have never seen before, now they are approved, sorry for the delay, some of them were several months old but they never showed up until today! I will try and answer some of the questions in the next few weeks, pretty busy right now. Thanks for watching and thanks for all the kind comments.
Dude, ive seen shitload of tutorials on youtube but yours is one of the (if not THE) BEST one there is, you dont waste time talking bout shit nobory cares, or trying (and failing) to be funny, your showing people exactly what's in description in a way that even a 3d max dummy like me understands how this thing works, and for that i am thankful.
cool, im new 2 3ds max, and im interested in the games.. but im woundering like what time of game u can great? like.. can you only play them on 3ds max? or can u like burn them 2 a disk and make ps2, ps3, ps1, or like xbox.. or pc games... like what games can u creat? and another question.. i see pepole created really realistic charecters... how do u do that? is it the same way u just did right now? or is that a more complex step? and a diffrent way? or do u just download them or something?...
hi, i really enjoy this tutorial, i always find myself browsing throu my favs for it. Might i ask a question, how do i "save" my bones structure before i start messing with it? I always find myself doing backups because once the skin modifier is applied and i start playing with bones it is really ahrd to go back to the "relaxed" structure.. with relaxed i mean reset, the position my skeleton had in the beginning..so again is there a way to store the original position and to load it later on?
I've followed this tutorial and mine's come out a treat. In mine, though, I've done some more animation - I have my capsule spider thing walking, crouching, turning and the like. How would you decrease the amount of deformation/warping on the main body of the "spider" when it turns, walks, or does anything mildly more extreme than lift a leg?
did the render.. it was cool.. but.. it was only black mask of the character, no textures.... o o O (Mental Note, think i need to look at a video tutorial for rendering to video ) lol
One thing that's helped me over the years is to create the simplest experiment possible, and then see if the render or whatever works. So for example start an entirely new file, create a sphere, render in the perspective viewport, and see if that works.
Hey buddy - May i ask you a question. Once I have the animation done , scenery, characters lighting etc, How do i actually make the whole thing into a movie? i.e. export to an AVI? i can see render and preview thing but no actual movie as such?
You've got to go to the Render menu and look for Render To File - then pick AVI or whatever. Also make sure you are rendering all the frames (at the top of the Render dialog box).
you speak very clearly and there are no confusion over what you are doing. excellent tutorial!

5 stars and instand fav :)

cool, im new 2 3ds max, and im interested in the games.. but im woundering like what time of game u can great? like.. can you only play them on 3ds max? or can u like burn them 2 a disk and make ps2, ps3, ps1, or like xbox.. or pc games... like what games can u creat? and another question.. i see pepole created really realistic charecters... how do u do that? is it the same way u just did right now? or is that a more complex step? and a diffrent way? or do u just download them or something?...

hi, i really enjoy this tutorial, i always find myself browsing throu my favs for it.

At first glance, I thought rigging and animating was a pain in the butt, but you made me see that it's a lot easier than it seems. Thanks :D
I have two questions: Is it possible to copy and mirror the animation from one arm/ leg to the other arm/leg?
How can you apply the same animation to two different characters?

Hi, I have a question, when I select the bones were also selected objects, how to select the bones could avoid selecting objects?
I do not know much English, so why talk like that.

Much appreciated. Thanks for the tutorial =)

Hey, does anyone know where can I find 'Character' list? :(
What version of Max is it? It's strange, because I haven't this list.

did the render.. it was cool.. but.. it was only black mask of the character, no textures.... o o O (Mental Note, think i need to look at a video tutorial for rendering to video ) lol
CyborDax 2 years ago
One thing that's helped me over the years is to create the simplest experiment possible, and then see if the render or whatever works. So for example start an entirely new file, create a sphere, render in the perspective viewport, and see if that works.

Hey buddy - May i ask you a question. Once I have the animation done , scenery, characters lighting etc, How do i actually make the whole thing into a movie? i.e. export to an AVI? i can see render and preview thing but no actual movie as such?
Thanks in advance if you can answer this :)
CyborDax 2 years ago
You've got to go to the Render menu and look for Render To File - then pick AVI or whatever. Also make sure you are rendering all the frames (at the top of the Render dialog box).
