It bothers me so much when an athlete messes up under pressure and then the coach (especially her father) completely shrugs her off for not performing perfectly. I don't care how hard you have worked. S*it happens. I wanted to slap Marta Karoyli (sp?) at the 08 Olympics for how she treated Alicia after she messed up on floor. I can't imagine the panic attacks these girls must have at meets if they so much as twitch during a routine.

The difference between the two coaches is so visible here, they're both amazing coaches, but they have a very different style of coaching.

I'm glad Nastia got her gold after all her struggles, but I'm also so happy Shawn finally got hers during beam finals, she really deserved it.

Even though Nastia wasn't always at her best, I believe Shawn deserves credit for everything she's accomplished. Both of them made it to the Olympic team, which is a big accomplishment in itself. I mean, how many gymnasts get the opportunity to prove themselves to the world?

I think stuff like this and the Shawn Johnson media obsession made Nastia's win all the sweeter. I've had hope all along and just knew she had it in her. She lost a lot but in the end it's not the six things Shawn won and she lost, but the one night she triumphed to win the greatest thing of all.

the ONLY reason shawn would win was because nast kept falling. when nast doesnt fall, she is unbeatable. she won by SIX tenths. in gym thats a substantial margin. and shes the only women able to break 63 in internat comp. even in quals she beat yang w/ a fall

the thing is that SJ was so overscored in the US

nast gets mid 15s on floor nationally and internationally

however shawn gets 15s internationally but 16s nationally. that made the difference. intern. judges dont do this overscoring bull

I don't think Nastia's artistry is superior to Shawn's. Nastia reminds me of Khorkina, and she's just too flexible to the point where it looks unnatural.

I prefer Shawn's solid and steady execution on beam, that to me is artistry.

in 2006 the worlds top two all-arounders were nast and chellsie. (i kno they werent in the AA final, but chellsie got first in the qualifying round and nast beat her a few months before at the nationals)

in the begining of 07, both of these were completely out cause of injury. enter shawn johnson with an easy shot at wining with no one to compete against (i.e. at her level)

So Shawn was lucky at 14 when her score (judged from the same Code of Points for difficulty and execution) blew every (then healthy) sr. out of the water, she was lucky on the Int. forum at the Amer. Cup and Worlds where she won over every int'l player? Sounds more like talent! Can this translate to an Olympic Championship? Well, she, Nastia or many other gymnasts could win. But just because she crashed the status quo before the Olympics I won't relegate her talent in the sport to luck.

Shawn does have the A panel judges but not the B panel where Nastia scores higher. She needs high difficulty to offset the B panel. Yes, Shawn was lucky not to have to compete head to head with a healthy reigning 4X Nat'l champion but rather a broken, watered down, couldn't train champ. At 07 Worlds 06 Champ Ferrari had a bad injury she was competing with. If Shawn beats a 100% Nastia & Ferrari (and a couple others) that would be something.

I LOVE both Nastia and Shawn, and their styles. Nastia has a long body with little muscle mass, which adds to her dancing and flexibility. Shawn very muscluar, and when you have more muscle mass you are naturally less flexible. Also, when you have a short body it takes away from the look of your dancing. Pointing out the defincies in one athlete's skills doesn't dull the shine of the other. Both are amazing gymnasts, and I they do well in Beijing- for themselves and the US.

Also, hopefully Shawn's dancing and overall gymnatics will improve as she gets older. Other athletes come to mind where this has been the case in the past... Dominique Moceanu, Michelle Kwan... She will mature as she gets more experience.

Please don't use graceful(even at 12) Michelle Kwan in comparison to Shawn. Shawn's "dancing" consists mostly of smiling and that won't be so cute anymore when she's Nastia's age.

Shawn will never be as graceful as Kwan or Nastia. She sacrifices dancing and flexibility for pure raw muscle mass. The girl is a power house! However, one of the criticisms of Kwan at 14 or so was she was not graceful enough-- esp. when compared to other skaters. As she got older, it was then commented that she as she matured she was more graceful. At 12- hmmm- didn't see much grace there, but that's just me. But, skating is a more fluid sport that lends itself to a more graceful appearance.

Shawn's 16 now so this is probably as graceful as she'll get. She doesn't have years (like Kwan) to mature dancewise. I'm hoping Shawn can come up with a more mature FX by the Olympics.

MK was graceful for her age but she was competing with girls 4+ yrs her senior then. She had beautiful arm & hand positions in 93-94 but needed better carriage & stretch.
