The anime actually changed the message of the story completely to appeal to a more "mainstream" audience compared to the original visual novel.

The visual novel was actually about sacrifice, and the theme was the struggle to attain a happy ending. It highlighted more around the concept of "losing" (as opposed to the anime which had a perfect ending.)

Plot was VERY different!

But for me, the visual novell is much more scary and leaves allot of clues than the anime.

As someone who loves both Elfen Lied and Higurashi, I just want to say this: It's not fair to compare them. Elfen Lied is a story that dives into the hypocrisy of humans, and Higurashi is a murder-mystery that talks about the preconceptions of fate and the importance of friendship. They are completely different, you can't compare them. The genres are different, the circumstances are definitely different. The morals are different, everything is different, barring gore and pretty girls.
